Andy & Max | Land Rover Defender Vanlife
Австралия
Добавлен 11 июл 2023
Hi! We're Andy and Max, a Kiwi couple from Sydney, Australia! After travelling what we could in our home country of New Zealand, we've decided to hop across the ditch and travel all of Aus- and to do it, we've converted our 2011 Land Rover Defender, Riley, to be our new home on wheels, getting us around on our Aussie lap for our full-time van-life adventures.
This is where we'll take you along for the ride with us, sharing all about our Defender Camper Conversion experience as well as showing you our completed truck build - so you can learn about how to do van-life too. On our channel we're also sharing what we get up to as we slowly make our way across Australia all while working as two creatives on the road! ☼

Will We Regret Buying a Defender Over a Troopy? Campervan Conversion Plans!
Have not seen your videos before. Always interested if there is a Land Rover involved. See you were in Bright, my birthplace. We farm a few ks out. When young hitch hiked your country. Is Australia now home for you or are you just holidaying?
Such a beautiful place, we loved Bright and would go back in a heartbeat - good spot for you to be a local from. We’re living in Australia now, have been exploring for the last 3 years here. Still proud kiwis though 👀🏕️ welcome to our channel! Good to have you.
yes blue tongue lizard, harmless. When threatened they will open their mouth wide, show their blue tongue, and hiss at you. Then you can pick them up carefully, and put it on your arm and pat him gently... Waiting to see Max do that 🤨 Shame the grand canyon was closed but, bushfires are something no one plans for in Aus... As for swatting flies? That folks is called the great aussie salute. 🤣 Great vid of your trip, Andy & Max.
Ohhh good to know… you’ll be waiting a while for Max to do that 😅😂 hahaha yes, we are quickly learning that flies are just a part of it… salute we must. But making do where we can with it 🤷🏼♂️ thank you, see you around!
Its a blue tongue lizard, they are gorgeous and harmless - if you get close they stick their little tongues out and its blue
Glad to hear it was harmless! Maybe next time we try see their blue tongue 🤪
What size tyres are you running? 255s?
We're running a set of Toyo 285/75 R16!
Nice little Christmas trip. Would have liked to have seen those surfboards get wet.
Cheers Grahame! Definitely need to remember to bring my GoPro with me next time to at least show the boards wet, but when the swell is good filming goes out the window! 😂 Appreciate you giving it a watch!
Fantastic
@@WherestheRV 🙌🙌 thanks for the love!
Thanks for sharing your setup and the way you use it
@@neilmitchelhill9388 mate, it’s a pleasure! Our hope is that this is helpful to someone out there - after all the hours we spent searching RUclips for the perfect build 😂
Beautiful video guys
@@neilmitchelhill9388 thanks for sharing the love! Many more videos like this to come 🙌🩵
Brilliant video, Morton is one of my favourite spots in Australia & while the Barge is expensive the camping is very affordable. Now I have my new Troopy with the Headspace conversion (& Headspace awning being fitted in early Jan 🙏) I cannot wait to go back.
@@neilmitchelhill9388 ahhh Moreton is truly one of our favourite spots… worth every penny as so much to explore, hoping to hit Fraser this year too! Headspace never disappoints - you will love your set up! Let us know how you go!
Met you (Andy) at Diamond Head a couple of months ago (I had the Sandy Taupe Troopy with the Headspace conversion), enjoyed this video so thank you
@@neilmitchelhill9388 always a pleasure to meet people out and about who share the love of the outdoors - ps, I remember you, how good is Diamond Head? thanks for following along 🏕️
Kiaora folks, found your site again. Safe travels, from the Northern Beaches, to Vic, SA, and beyond. O.o Be very mindful, that you are traveling in summer, and fire bans can be in play in different council areas. Fines can be huge so be very aware, and if in doubt? Don't start a fire. Black cockatoos is what Max seen, there are different species of said cockies, look at the colour of the crest on their head to identify them. Snakes aren't really an issue, as you can see them clearly, but scorpians are another thing to look out for as you go south/southwest. Small and hardly noticable at night. Mainly on the ground. Always shake your footwear out before putting them on, if you leave them outside. Take care, stay safe. Merry Christmas, enjoy your chockies.
@@Lex-Hawthorn hello to you, hope you are having a great and safe summer back in the NB! ☀️ Yes, we are very much checking the bans, they change in each spot we travel to! Sooo much wildlife here, we have seen plenty of snakes so far… including browns and red bellies. Max isn’t loving that… haha, but no scorpions yet, we will keep our eyes peeled, thanks for the tip! 👀 catch you in 2025!
Question on the fridge. Does the contents inside the fridge rattle when you are on the go on gravel 😊😊
Surprisingly not! The only time we've heard any noise from the fridge is when the fridge is getting empty and we've left a glass jar where it shouldn't have been 😅
Thanks for sharing that. Have enjoyed your videos and certainly you will share more one way or another. Is that a Bellman stove top coffee maker? I’d be interested to know what you think of it as I’d love one for my travels but have been told that they can be dangerous. Not sure if that’s right though. Here’s, Andy.
Absolutely! We will have another one in the works while we head away over the new year period into kosciuszko! ⛰️ We honestly couldn’t cope without the Bellman if it was taken away from us… easily the best coffee and closest you’ll get to a barista one while on the road! The only way they could be deemed as dangerous is due to them building pressure inside of them (but that’s how they work). They say to just keep an eye on the pressure gauge and not leave it unattended for a longer period of time 🙌
It's great that you gave it a red hot go! I think full time travelling would be great, but going away for weekends etc in a really capable 4wd is more enjoyable. I feel like full time would almost desensitise the appreciation of the experience. Looking forward to seeing the adeventures you both go on!
Thank you!! We still love the idea of full time travel however, just like you’ve also mentioned, you could easily become desensitised by the whole experience. Now that we have a base, we are super excited to spend as many weekends as we can exploring new areas! Can’t wait to bring you along for the ride!
That's it just do what is the best for your mental health and stay safe, Australia is getting very expensive even for camp life, stay true and love yous 🍻🍻
Thanks so much for your comment and sharing the love!
Land rover defender 110 classic modified car price in 2024
What a trip, Morton always delivers!
It will never disappoint 😍
Loooove the vibe of Moreton 🫶🏼
There’s no better place 😍
I was there two weeks ago in my 110. Absolutely beautiful
It’s easily one of our favourite places we’ve been 😍 can’t help ourselves but to try plan another trip this summer!
Lovely video 🍻🍻
Thanks so much! So glad you enjoyed coming along for the ride with us 🙌
✌️✌️
Great to see you guys back since the last vid. The Rover still looks new after many kilometers and I'm hoping the interior is holding up as well. Agree about the heat and humidity in FNQ and I live in Brissie, wouldn't want to be in FNQ in the summer. Loved how you didn't sugarcoat anything and kept it real. Cheers and stay safe.
Riley is still looking shmick, thanks for the love 👀 big agree there, it’s safe to say we learnt our lesson big time… us kiwis thought “surely it’s not that hot” when our usual summer temp is 25degrees. Can say we will not do that again 🤪
Not exactly a van..
You’re right, it’s a home on wheels ✌🏽🤍
Just found your channel, I really like the colour!! How did fix the 95LT storage box to the roof racks?
@@denniscalvert3390 she’s minty fresh 🍀 the roof platform has “slotted grooves” which allows you to slide accessories on it. I drilled a few holes into the bottom of box and used that to secure the slots
In a 60 litre tank of diesel is just over 3 months of my total electrical energy with the air con going 24-7 in QLd. Do you think van life will stop being attractive because of the fossil fuels you use? A tank a week for a year is about 17 years of my electrical energy. This lifestyle can't continue not if we stop oil, do you have plans to stop?
But do you own a car, do you ever fly on a plane or use gas for any form of cooking or heating? There is so much more than your energy costs in regards to your carbon footprint so please don't be to quick to judge.
@@broccattley8919 What a stupid reply, the point is you have to eat, do people have to fly or drive where they don't have to or is it choice?
@@broccattley8919 What an absolutely ridiculous reply, the point is people have to eat, flying or driving not so much. I am well aware of my carbon budget and it's not about quick to judge, the message of having to drive less has been around 30 years.
I'll be going south, stuff NQ in Summer. from Yeppoon!
Ohhhhh yes we learnt our lesson, big time 😅 that heat is TESTING! 🙌
oooiiiii, wen comes to tires you should check the day of manufacture on these tires and discarded if they are older then 5 years specially when your defender is laden a lot of weight compare to NZ here in Australia the distances are way larger and the temperatures are very epic what affect everything in a very different way, is ok to feel home sick you are just 2 young ppl who just left home and became immigrants in a new country what is very brave, I did move to Australia wen i was very young too, I can relate of how hard this can be
Big agree here 👌 the heat is very different in comparison to back in NZ. The things you only truly grasp when you’re here I guess! It is a big step going to a new country no matter where you came from, so thank you for the love - good to hear someone else gets it! 🥰
@@rileytheroamer yeah the heat is insane, I did spend a year travelling across the WA and I tell ya the summers up north west is incredible insane you need to keep hydrated, and around the Arnthem land in the NT the humidity and rain storms are very epic, and beautiful, do you know in the north of the NT is one of the places where you can see some of the most mesmerising thundering & lighting in the whole world, is amazingly insane you have to check it out for sure You're very welcome, we are here to support one and other right, keep going with the channel please
@@janolopez7436 wow sounds like you have had some amazing adventures - despite Mother Nature doing her thing. ☔️⛱️ Aus truly is so beautiful and we can’t wait to head to those places you mentioned - eventually! But thanks so much for sharing the love, great to have you along - we will be keeping up with our channel!
Cute Max !!! Looks like you made some awesome memories.. but crack up to me you spent so much money on that thing and no air bags and no ac..
But it made great RUclips content though 🤷🏼♂️ haha we will be getting the aircon fixed (eventually)
@@rileytheroamer I had no AC in my defender for years in the NT, was mostly fine. Beaded seat covers from Supercheap autocan provide some relief for cheap.
Don't need aircon in a Defender.
@@Just_Tom09 we will look into this 🫡 thanks for the tip.
You certainly have covered a lot of kilometres since your last video and, the Defender is still looking extraordinary with that custom paint.
This is a comment we’re pumped to see 👀 we think Riley is in good shape too for her age! Thanks a bunch 👌
Wrap, not paint.
Good to see the adventure has begun. Enjoy!
You bet 🙌 thanks a million for following along
Looks great!
We love our conversion 👀🙌
It’d be great if they made a gullwing windscreen!!! Like the safari windows on the old Kombis!
If only!! Surely someone, somewhere can make this happen! 🙏
I doubt whether you bought a Troop Carrier or a Defender will make any difference at all , just another couple showing us the “off grid” life and loving every minute of it.
Nice set up! ❤
Thanks so much team! We got there in the end and the efforts were well worth it 😅
Any more videos coming ?
It's been some very slow progress on our end HOWEVER, we finally have a new video going up tomorrow! 🥳
Awesome, will keep an eye out for it :) cheers
Poo tyres😂
RIP 👀
Have you noticed any difference in the handling of the Defender following the rooftop conversion? More weight, higher up.
We have noticed a slight difference in handling with the roof conversion installed however, as we are still on stock suspension besides having Airbag Man airbags installed, the handling could definitely be improved with some upgraded suspension.. hopefully some stage soon we can get onto that! 🙏
@@rileytheroamer do you still have your rear anti-roll/sway bar fitted?
Hey, doesn‘t the Kistchen rattle to much?
Hey Andrej, surprising (and much to our relief), we don't ever hear the kitchen rattling at all so it's super quiet while we're underway 🙏
Thanks for posting this. Quick question. Colour aside (I don't mind it) how pleased are you with the quality of the wrap 6mths on? How is it holding up to UV and offroad use? What do you not like about it? Would you do it again? Was it money well spent?
Thanks so much for watching!! I (Andy) can safely say I'm really happy with the colour now and wouldn't change it for anything! We had our doubts on what the final product could turn out like, especially with the rivets however, it's great and we're super happy with it, and continually getting comments about it while we drive around wondering if it's painted or wrapped. Six months on and it still looks how it did when we first collected it however, the only downside to it is that with some off-roading, there are a couple of areas of the wrap that have just started peeling in the corners but this is minor. Would we do it again? Absolutely!
Great video love it! Btw, which brand is the canister shower?
Thank you! The shower canister is by a company in Australia called ONTAP which as been amazing!
The colour is mint :)
You had me at ‘-hit’ in a bush 😂
That’s a follow from me. Nice work guys! Looking forward to your and Riley’s adventures around Australia 🤙🏼
Appreciate it so much 🙌 It's been a long time coming however, we finally have another video to showcase.. coming tomorrow!
Go Kiwi... 🤟 we'll keep following you.
We love the Kiwi support! And we finally have another video dropping tomorrow for you!
🤷
Mint as 👍🏼
Thanks so much team!
Hi, are you doing any more RUclips videos or have you given up on it ☹️ I was looking forward to your adventures.
Hey Mark! We actually have a new RUclips video in the works now however, it’s safe to say it’s been a chaotic past few months so fingers crossed we can try post more regularly! 🙏🏻
That’s good news, hope to see you back soon 👍
🤷
Love those pants.
What a pity you guy's didn't document the build 😢. Love your channel and content, hope too see what you are going to show. 🥂🤗❤
What was the name of the roof tent conversion company?
It's by a company called Headspace Campers based here in Australia!
