Qallupilluit - Horror Short Film
Просмотров 3,2 тыс.21 день назад
In Inuit mythology, the Qallupilluit (a.k.a. Qalupalik) are creatures that live along Arctic shorelines near ice floes. They are said to steal children that wander too close to the water. This myth is believed to serve the purpose of protecting children from a dangerous environment, keeping them from wandering too close to the ice. While this film is inspired by the inuit mythology of the “Qall...

    Love the video, but I saw agree on disagree not every job you’re gonna get paid your rate, but that is something that you should aim for I would say but for the jobs that don’t meet your rate I personally have a criteria of. Is it a good portfolio piece? Is it something that I’m passionate about and if it’s yes to any of those then it doesn’t necessarily have to meet my rate for me to do it, but that’s up for me to decide at the end of the day. And I also feel like there’s a lot of power in seeing no being able to see no touch because it doesn’t meet your read is not necessarily a bad thing especially if you don’t get anything out of it besides the money the example you used is great because you were able to The system or get your terms across that you would also be doing this while filming this video depending on the job you may not have those opportunities or people may not have those systems that allow them to do that while filming a video

    Hey, an Inuk from Nunavut here! Sorry about the mean, downright rude, negative comments saying that your short film is trash. I've read through them, and I agree with a few, and there are some that I'm like, 'Mm, could've written that better,' or 'Wow, that's so mean.' In my opinion, I sort of like it. The colour pallets, the music, and even the actors are good! I just think it would've been appreciated a bit more if you had collaborated with a few Inuit directors and/or actors and have had permission from people who are part of my/their culture, and getting the setting of the time and location right before deciding to get 'creative' with it. I mean no hate, but I do wish there had been communication between you, your filming crew, and some Inuit before posting this. -Colleen

    So disappointed with this. After reading through all the comments, it’s clear by his responses that he is not open to understanding the significance of this. Many people have written lengthy, patient, kind hearted explanations in his Instagram comments and I think that is so generous of them. It ultimately seems like he does not answer to anyone and does not take this seriously though. What does matter to him? Sponsorships. The competition this was created to promote was sponsored by 14 different companies. (5 of which belong to him so more like 9). That money could be going elsewhere and supporting genuinely wonderful filmmakers that understand the importance of other cultures. What to do? Email email email. Ultimately this is a really bad look for him as it’s clear he is not willing to apologize for his wrong doings. Companies don’t like that. Brands don’t like that. Emailing them and expressing your concern that they are sponsoring someone who has questionable values is much more effective than trying to explain this to ears unwilling to listen. It’s not “vengeful” or “trying to tear him down”. He’s had the opportunity to clarify things and has shown that he is unwilling to be compassionate. Until that changes, it’s not unreasonable to be upset with companies that continue to support him. Emailing sponsors ensures that he can’t continue to benefit from his work if he continues to operate in this way. It’s not cancel culture. It’s not the woke mob. It’s expressing your views to the companies that support and fund these projects and letting them make their own decisions on what kind of work they want to support.

    This competition is getting frustrating to watch TBH . Once again, it seems like you’re valuing flashy production over real storytelling. The winners all had weak storylines but obviously had the budget to make it look fancy - not exactly encouraging for creators who can’t afford high production. This isn’t a one-off either; it’s a pattern we’ve noticed over the years. If you really want to support new talent, you should consider splitting the awards: one for genuine low-budget storytelling and another for those who can throw money at production. Otherwise, you’re just discouraging the very creators you say you want to uplift. And why do these high-budget filmmakers keep entering? It should be fair for those just starting out.

    • @jakobowens8439
      @jakobowens8439 25 дней назад

      Ah man sorry you feel that way...everyone's entitles to their opinions. I don't think and our entire judging team didn't think so. But something you have to remember is this is a Short Film Competition with VARIOUS criteria of which your films are judged and scored. This isn't a "which film had the best storyline film competition" The top films are scored and judged on the different criteria such as 1. Story 2. Scare/Creep Factor 3. Creative use of the new yearly rules & challenges 4. Overall Production Value. So yes you could have a great story but if your film lacks or suffers in all the other judging criteria your film probably won't score as well as other films that hit the mar in all the areas. Next year I would like to potentially open up more categories for winning films rather than just 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. But yes at the end of the day this is a competition of which everyone is playing by the same rules and being judged on the same scale. If you want to WIN then you need to produce a film that can hit all facets of the competition criteria and not just only have a good story. One of my favorite films this year was actually shot on a GoPro...had very low production value but the story was phenomenal & was very creative, but ultimately it was not scary at all and didn't implement some of the rules/challenges as well as some of the other films...so it didn't win. But I think this is where some new categories next year could give a film like this a chance to win something! So I hope this helps unlock a little insight into how you or others could win in the future. I tend my team take this competition very seriously and do our best to watch/decipher/judge hundreds of films in under 1 week...it's a lot of work. Anyways appreciate you and your feedback!

As someone who's supported PrismLens and Tropic Color before, I'm seriously disappointed that you decided to ignore and dismiss the Indigenous Inuit people who came to you about this. I hear you, but with all due respect thousands of filmmakers from all Over the world just made 200+ short films about various mythologies and folklore tales/creatures for my horror short film contest that I just hosted for the film community of which they are not "of the culture” 1 of which was also made about the Qallupilluit which is not portrayed “accurately”…yet because I have a name and a following everyone is concerned about threatening and shaming me. It comes with the territory of having some semblance of “notoriety”...I’ve been dealing with this kind of thing for the last decade, people looking for any reason to try and “take me down” or "hate on me". Ultimately Folklore/Myths/Legends from any culture all fall under "public Domain" anyone can tell a fictional story, make a short film, Write a book etc about any of that. Just because people get upset about it doesn't make it or me wrong. Now I understand where they may be coming from emotionally, but if you want people to "listen" & "understand" then you do it with love NOT attacks. Because to be honest I've received an endless amount of vile and disgusting threats, Comments, messages about me, my race, my safety etc. That's not how you approach situations or people if you want them to be understanding and listen...and if that behavior is not condemned, but mine is... then ok. All love man, no ill will, have a great day. Bless!

    • @Agluvak
      @Agluvak 26 дней назад

      @@jakobowens8439 I appreciate that storytelling is a universal art form, and it’s true that folklore and mythology can be creatively interpreted. However, Indigenous stories like those of the Qallupilluit have deep cultural significance and are often bound to community values and histories that deserve respect, particularly when handled by those outside of the culture. These aren’t just myths or public domain tales but are often tied to living traditions and identities that continue to shape Indigenous people’s lives and beliefs. Indigenous filmmakers are often marginalized within the industry and denied the opportunities to tell their own stories, leading to a pattern where stories about Inuit and other Indigenous communities are made by outsiders, often reinforcing harmful stereotypes or inaccuracies while keeping Inuit out of the economy. In filmmaking, authenticity and respect for source material are fundamental, just as they are when adapting a book or working with historical events. Just as a filmmaker would prioritize details in sound, cinematography, and storytelling to elevate the craft, respecting the culture behind a story is critical to producing a work that honors the people to whom it belongs. Ignoring this dimension of respect is akin to disregarding the original author’s work in an adaptation. The claim that “folklore and myths from any culture fall under public domain” misses an important reality: not all cultures’ stories share the same context or history. In some cases, like Japan’s, traditional stories are actively exported as part of cultural and economic initiatives. Other cultures have moved away from their older folktales. But in the case of Inuit and many other Indigenous peoples, these stories hold a unique, protected space due to a history of forced erasure and suppression. Inuit storytelling was actively banned by Christian missionaries, deemed as “devil worship,” and many tales were either lost, reduced to anthropological records, or only kept alive in secret. Treating all cultural stories as equally accessible lacks cultural literacy and ignores the specific history of repression that has impacted Indigenous storytelling traditions. These stories require a different level of respect, as they are part of a cultural resurgence and survival against long-standing exclusion and misrepresentation While I understand your frustration with the aggressive feedback you’ve received, it’s crucial to recognize that many of the concerns being raised are not about “taking you down” but rather about addressing a pattern of cultural appropriation and erasure that Indigenous communities have endured for generations. A good artist can separate themelves from their work, and accept critique of their work is about their work, not about them as a person. Using notoriety to amplify or monetize a culturally sensitive story while sidestepping these concerns can feel exploitative. If an artist chooses to court controversy they should be prepared to handle the audience’s response. Engaging in art means accepting feedback, especially from those whose cultures are being represented. The way this criticism is being handled suggests a reluctance to acknowledge valid concerns, which is essential for any artist committed to respectful storytelling. If you can't handle the heat then you will not grow as an artist and continue making bad films with "great color correcting" where people will "like the visuals."

      @@jakobowens8439 *"Ultimately Folklore/Myths/Legends from any culture all fall under "public Domain" anyone can tell a fictional story, make a short film, Write a book etc about any of that. Just because people get upset about it doesn't make it or me wrong."* -- THIS is where you're wrong, the myth you based this on is NOT public domain and you did NOT gain permission nor feature any Inuit member and this is why you've made an entire community of people upset. I don't condone any death threats you've gotten but I do think you need to LISTEN to the community and understand why this entire project was wrong from the get go. And just because "thousands of filmmakers all over the world" did it does NOT make this okay! 1. The Qallupilluit is NOT public access for you to just grab and utilize on your own. 2. No members of the Inuit community were consulted, represented or featured in the making of this so therefore it is in fact, cultural appropriation. 3. I've seen your comments and replies on Instagram and you sink as low, if not more, than the worst comments you're claiming to receive from this. As someone who used to support you and PrismLens/TropicColor, and as an Indigenous filmmaker, I am truly disappointed and appalled by your response to all this. It is sickening how you've mocked us all with cheap, lazy comments and even automated ones where you just send the link to the film to people you're pissing off. 4. I spoke to your producer on the phone and he seemed a lot more humane and willing to understand/listen about this than you, and I really hope something is done about this, or none of the backlash will (deservedly so) stop. All we ask is to be heard, acknowledged and understood and you've made a mockery of this all. I don't know why or how you can be okay with upsetting this many people just to stick to some sense of pride and own up to your mistake.
