Nice introduction. As a mechanical engineering student at Stanford (1975-1979) I took classes in product design, including “ME101 Visual Thinking” using the text and syllabus of Robert McKim, who wrote the book Thinking Visually, and was the guiding light of the program. David Kelly, I recall was a teaching assistant for some of the product design courses, when he learned the methodology, which was already fully formed for teaching undergrad engineering students. Observation, visual thinking through sketching, state of relaxed awareness to foster creativity, techniques of idea generation, keeping a design notebook, where we were encouraged to keep a running list of “problems” we observed in our day to day life. Solutions can be easily developed, but “problems” are the goldmine, as they represent opportunity to create value. 50 years later, as I read about design thinking, I see a great accumulation of practice, wider acceptance, and maybe a few new techniques, but no great differences in the fundamental concepts as taught to students by Bob McKim. As John Arnold passed in 1963, I’m not sure how much of the curriculum changed from then until 1975, but I venture that much of the development in the concepts into a teachable discipline was due to Bob McKim. As you touched on, much of what Ideo added was how to create consulting teams that could passionately and repeatedly apply the process.

When you turn your attention to been very formal about research, you turn your attention away from design...research is to strategy while design is to execution in a way. good research for design is efficient and one way to go about that is to visualize your research away from words. @Design Disciplin

Another perspective coming from an industrial design agency owner: The physical good being produced definitely can play a role in limiting mobility. That said, there are MANY verticals in ID that allow for designers to travel wherever while designing physical things. For instance, a significant portion of our workload comes in the form of exhibit and retail design. I've worked remotely all over the world while working on these projects from hotel lobbies, coffee shops, etc. Things that require shop visits, material samples, etc can absolutely put the brakes on travel plans, for sure -- but there are great exceptions to this. Really appreciate this video!
