Saving the Hazel Dormouse | Short Documentary
The Hazel Dormouse is an iconic species of our woodlands in the UK, with their population teetering on the edge of extinction, with a 70% decline since 2000. Since 1993, over 1,000 dormice have been reintroduced into woodlands across the UK by Peoples’ Trust for Endangered Species and partners, as part of their annual reintroduction programme. ‘Saving the Hazel Dormouse' is a short documentary exploring the plight of the hazel dormouse in the UK, following the stories of conservationists racing against time to save them from extinction.
I hope this film raises awareness of their decline and the inspirational conservation efforts ongoing to save them and reconnect the UK's fragmented lands...

The Skydance 🦅 Back in April of this year, I witnessed one of the most mesmerising forms of Wildlife behaviour I have ever seen - the Hen Harrier Skydance! This was my first time seeing a Hen Harrier in the wild, and also my first time observing this fabulous display of love! I was so focused while filming this sequence that after the Male harrier finished its display, a wave of overwhelming jo...

Tresillian River Egret Sequence (MNHP 211 Assignment 1)

I'm thrilled to finally share a short Little Egret sequence I've been working on for the last few weeks for my assignment handed in last week. I've thoroughly enjoyed spending time observing these birds as they elegantly hunt for their prey at low tide. Rivers such as these offer a buffet of food for residents and migratory-wading birds. I'll admit the Little Egrets are a right bugger to get cl...
Short Eared Owl | Samuel Horne

Last week I caught a lucky break in the weather and headed out to a recent sighting of Short Eared Owls that have been overwintering here in the UK. There was some unforecasted rain and heavy clouds, but I endeavored to get out with the new camera and hope the conditions improved. As the harsh gusts dropped and the rain subsided I was in for a real treat as an individual Short Eared Owl put on ...

Hi Everyone! Apologies for the radio silence over 2021. I've been incredibly busy over the last 12 months, if you follow my Instagram you will know that I have started my dream course at University of Falmouth studying Marine and Natural History Photography. Whilst working on a passion project of mine during 2021 it became clear running up to Autumn that I would not be able to finish my project...

Hi everyone, so this is my first draft for 2020 covering the Winter Segment of my Documentary in progress this year. All that aside I hope you enjoy this short segment, which is a work in progress on a much larger pro...

Hi Everyone! So video editing is kind of new to me and I'm really eager to start sharing more content and learning as I go along. Wildlife photography and being outside in nature has become such a great passion of mine. I've always dreamed of putting a video together like this, so here is a short clip of my week away in New Forest in the United Kingdom. I hope you enjoy it! Any constructive fee...
Only just got around to watching this! It's incredible, you have crafted such a beautiful film. Congratulations Sam!
@@bennicholsonwild6101 thank you so much Ben, such lovely words, I'm so glad that you enjoyed it!
Fortunate enough to see this the most beautiful thing ever seen the male diving etc trying to impress the female watching. Once in a lifetime experience.
Gosh I was ignorant. I've always thought a dormouse from childhood stories was an ordinary mouse. Not so it seems. They are utterly adorable & it's sad to think we could ever lose them. I really hope not. I'm from Australia & we don't have them here so I hope my ignorance is forgiven. To my mind the people doing this work are like heroes. Good on them.
Ignorance is harmful when it's a choice, not a circumstance!
I think there's a lot of truth in the stories we're told as children, but sometimes we don't always focus on the underlying facts until we are older. I knew nothing about the Hazel Dormouse before the project started, 9 months later the film is complete and I've learnt so much about them, what they stand for and the conservation work on going, it's never too late to care and make a difference!
Discontinue the species and related .. 😑
Sorry couldn't you elaborate what you mean? ☺️
little cuties!
@@onestarabove7027 Aren't they just!! 🙏💚

❤ Shared on X, Thankyou
Thank you for sharing! 🙏
Can any expert tell me if dormice can reliably be identified by sound? We did a bat survey last year and it gave multiple matches for Hazel Dormouse. The detector was set up next to a hedge (Devon bank, hundreds of years old)
A very interesting question! I will look into it and try to get back to you! ☺️☺️
I love them!!They are so precious. I hope for the best for them. With so many dedicated and wonderful people saving them, they just have to survive!!❤
I couldn't agree more, they are just such wonderful creatures! Thank you so much for your kind messages 🙏

Great video, have just seen it on Alan Titchmarsh Sunday morning show.
what a fantastic documentary!! very beautifully filmed and edited and the story is very well told. must have been a lot of work! it’s so great to see people coming up with solutions. we need more people to care about all small creatures and preserving their local ecosystem. i especially hope to see more wildlife corridors and bridges in the UK, the US where i live and all around the world! thanks to you and those in the film / everyone working to save the dormouse ❤
@@rhiannonm8132 thank you so much for your detailed compliments, it's greatly appreciated! 🙏 I truly loved making this film as you find such amazing people and stories to be told. There's so much work going on in the background it was a privilege to share it with the world. It was roughly 8-9 months of work, research, development, shooting and post production, but so worth it!
I think I want to be on a wildlife rehabilitation and reintroduction team like this. I'm studying Anthropology & Theater, and I've been wanting to pick a minor study as well (a minor is an American college program that you would add into your Bachelor's program - it's almost the equivalent of achieving an Associate's degree in that field on top of your Bachelor's degree). I've narrowed it down to choosing between a minor in Biological Science, Ecology or Animal Science. I would love to do all three, but that's kind of insane lol. I'm very passionate about ecological conservation efforts, as well as increasing the utilization of permaculture in common agriculture. Thank you for making this film and shedding light on this fantastic conservation project - an important message with beautiful cinematography is always a great combination.
@@thenoellew That's wonderful, rehabilitation and reintroduction is such a great combination! The course and additional studies sound incredible and great step forward. In the UK there is a lot more conversations about regenerative farming which is probably similar, in essence though better for farmers in the long run and better for wildlife. I'm so glad your enjoyed the film and the message was well received! I wish you all the best with your studies! 🙏☺️
This is a great film man, really beautifully crafted.
@@SergieRachmaninoff thank you Matt! I I greatly appreciate your kind words! 🙏

Wildlife corridors and bridges that connect habitat "pockets" are amazingly effective and so valuable in preservation/conservation efforts ❤ Wishing you all success!
@@delphipsmith5724 The corridors are a wonderful piece of eco-engineering! I can't wait for more to be built in UK!

1:42 The stethoscope size comparison to its' tiny little body, I can't 😭
I know, they're just so tiny and cute! 🥺 The vet was ever so gentle with them when checking them over!
Sending the brightest of blessings to you and your exquisite dormouse peoples, I hope with all my heart you’re able to get these little beings to a place of stability. Here in Australia we have similar issues with some of our more diminutive inhabitants too, habitat destruction is a very serious problem for them here, and it’s really not showing any signs of improvement either I might add. Animals give us our humanity, without them we couldn’t (& I wouldn’t want to really)survive. Everything crossed for the darling hazel dormouse (mice).🫠🥰💜☯️
@@michaellehane4800 thank you so much for the kind words! I hope that your conservation organisations can work their magic to restore the landscape and protect it for the future. It's scary to think that all the work is done could be destroyed so quickly by something like a wildfire 🥺.
Such a sweet film, Sam! Wonderfully made, and interviewing so many different people is no easy feat. Kudos to you!
@@miriamhughes Thank you so much Miriam! So glad you enjoyed it! It was quite the challenge with so many! Thankfully the last chapter was archived interviews so only had to transcribe and slot them together. 😁😁
Really fantastic documentary! I feel like little critters like these tend to not get as much attention as the larger & more well-known endangered animals, so I'm glad to see the spotlight on them. I hope this gets the attention it deserves! As a heads up, the generated subtitles have some quick-fix mistakes in a couple places - "dormice" is "dmise" most times its said, at 4:08 it says the year 200,000 instead of 2000, and at 8:25 it says 270 species instead of 2,070 species. They are otherwise accurate though! I believe the auto-generated captions can be edited by the video poster, so this could be a great way to help increase accessibility! Thank you for making this, it really is wonderful ☺
Thank you so much for the wonderful feedback it's so greatly appreciated, and I couldn't agree more the little ones need more attention!! I'll look into the auto generated captions ASAP!
✨🥰✨

I planred a wood and planted a large area of hazels with the thought I could make a haven for these fantastic little creatures, unfortunately the dormouse folk said that 10 acres was not large enough. I had permission to be ib a wood in Sonerset where there where still in habitat. Amazing little animal.
Yes unfortunately they really need a large area of mixed age woodland to thrive otherwise they could die out from inbreeding and or disease. Glad that you got to see them! They're wonderful creatures!
Really lovely film Sam!

Stunning piece of film...this is a truly magnificent bird that needs protecting PROPERLY.
Thank you! And I couldn't agree, I'm glad that there are still places they can thrive.
Woooow where did you see this?
Great piece of filming, magnificent bird. I'd think twice about sharing too much on Facebook though, it can damage your utube channel, as comments tend to go on Facebook instead of utube (comments on utube give you a favourable rating on the algorithm). Good luck with your channel, subbed!👍
Thank you that's very kind of you. And yes it can be tad annoying when sharing it on Facebook that happens, but at the moment I just appreciate people seeing my work whether it was directly on RUclips or other social links.
Stunning film and capture
