Big John is the best MMA ref out there, imo. Herb Dean is damned good too, but sometimes a bit inconsistant. But it's got to be one of the hardest jobs to do correctly. I remember it was UFC 2 or 3 when they finally changed the rule and allowed the REF (Big John) to stop a fight, before that only tapping, or corner towel. One of the most important rule changes ever made, and I'm sure John had a big part in its addition. I really got to buy his book when I get a few extra $'s.
Its also due to John being outspoken about the powers to be.

big john mccarthy came to the gym i train at and did a seminar and answered questions and talked. he knows soo much about mma its ridiculous. his words were also inspirational. great guy.
