Why is that diesel locomotive behind the steam locomotive
For a few reasons. 1. Providing electricity for the passenger cars. 2. Emergency braking in the event that 4014’s brakes fail. And 3. PTC, (Positive Train Control) since at the time, 4014 didn’t have PTC.
But that's also stupid, because he hauled over 150 cars with no diesel helper, but when UP retired him that's what made him lose his ability to do that
And plus; articulates were built for freight service, not passenger service

This locomotive just passed me in Seattle being towed, she’s pretty burnt up
Those gates sure were late going down. Only 9 seconds before she crossed the road. Here in LA, the gates go down about 6 hours before the train arrives.
