I used SDL for small 2d games and Monogame for 3d. Currently porting Pokemon Platinum using monogame

Ok, but spritebatch should be able to draw tons of tiles at once
defold , cocos there are lots of game engines out there, you don't have to make your own game engine for that audio mixing stuff and cocos has library called cocossharp.Just choose a 2d game engine and you are good to go .(i am stuck with unity for quite a while so i also want to try something new)

For anyone watching this down the line, there's another alternative to ditching the pipeline and loading PNGs, which is to use extensions line "Contentless" which automatically add files into the mgcb. This keeps the performance benefit while getting rid of the hassle.
What? Using a framework counts as "making an engine"?
By the way, if you insist on doing tile maps that way, I think you should, like, just draw the whole damn thing upon load and then draw the resulting texture of THAT.

God damn this game looks sick, was this game made in the engine you made in the previous videos? Also, will the game eventually be released to consoles (Xbox, PlayStation or Switch)? The most complex coding I've ever done was some simple .srt files for an old 1930s movie for my non-english speaking parents, I have no idea how complex or difficult it would be to port a pc game from your custom engine to a gaming console. Regardless I'm looking forward to its release, defently a instant purchase. ❤
@@Krisow98 thanks for the kind words! Yes, it's made with the same engine (more videos coming out about that soonish!) that's been heavily upgraded. Nothing to announce on the console front at the moment!
I had to go through it frame by frame, but I found the easter egg at 7:48. it says "public class Scene : YourMother {" for exactly 7 frames.

pygame pisses me off, how do you make trivial 2d games that are unplayable on a laptop with an i7? my laptop might be old, but it's not that bad! and yet, pygame games are borderline unplayable if not entirely so....
it's funny because when I was first starting out, it was just sort of expected that you had to write your own engine (usually in C++ with SDL or OpenGL) but it's cool that game engines are so good now that most people don't need to make an engine. but tbh I love the process of making a game engine. it's time consuming but lots of fun!
this video reminded me that the reason i gave up on learning c++ was because of setting up the fucking environment. fuck setting up c++ environments i fucking hate doing that

Game engines are just frameworks with an editor. I think folks confuse making a game engine compared to making a game. Making a general game engine should not be a first grab as you would be reinventing the wheel. But using a framework to build a game and develop abstraction and optimizations specific to your project is sometimes the best solution. That's no different than using react or vue or laravel i web development. Is just that generally once a framework grows large we call them engines.

First game i make willbe a banger ngl. The only problem i have is the music. I Am a good programmer and got only A's in art. i first started the game in java and made everything from scratch (no frame works, only java swing and AWT used) . Now im using unity, just for making it publishable on consoles
