Instead of filming this why don’t you do something to stop it? The foal and mom should be away from these other horses You allowed this This is criminal.

Very late to comment. This happens quite regularly on the NF. Owners try and keep the mares at home when they are about to foal. But obviously mistakes happen. My mare dropped early while she was still out and her foal was stolen. By a stroke of pure luck, somebody local saw the foal with the different herd, knew it didn't belong with them and contacted us. We found the herd, the foal was lying on the grass (obviously weakened), we picked him up and bundled him into the back of the car and got him home. The second stroke of luck was that my mare had spent enough time with her foal so she didn't reject him and he was able to nurse, so it was a happy ending. The mares in the small herd she was part of come home every evening. That evening she didn't turn up and then not until late the next day, and it was clear she had dropped the foal. I think she came home for help. Mares on the NF often do not breed every year, the amount of stallions being run has dropped significantly and the time period they do run is quite short, two months at most. So a lot of mares are very frustrated and jealous and steal the foals that are born. Of course the foal ends up dead if they can't be found in time. It's one of the reasons why mares foal about the same time. If you notice, there are no other foals about. Horse/ponies are very strange when it comes to foals anyway. They do attack them, they do kill them. I know somebody who was badly injured trying to protect a foal from another mare and that was nowhere near the NF.

If these horses are not wild then you should take the mother and foal into a different enclosure because in some cases the horses will kill the foal if they get too frustrated with it going back and forth it happens more than you would think

My guess would be that the father of the foal was not around to protect it. Therefore, any new dominant stallion would bred with the mare once the foal was removed from the equation. Brutal nature.

I think that part of this is the owner's fault! Larger horses and smaller horses that have offspring should NOT be together! And also, why did u just stand there looking?? If they are your ponies, u could just step over there grab the little foal and put the mom and baby SEPARATED FROM THE OTHERS! This was very disturbing to watch.

My question is why the person recording didn’t go and separate the fight? Yes it’s dangerous, but the interruption would probably have distracted the horses and spare the mom and baby from all that stress. Also, if you’re a horse owner and you see that, you should separate your horses.

  • @geobar2254

Frankly this whole video just pissed me off. I'm no horse breeder, trainer, owner, etc. but I am a horse lover. Why would people choose to stand around watch and video rather than step in and make sure the foal is removed from the dangerous situation. I don't give a fig about 'nature' and the natural way of things. You are a human, there are several of you there, STANDING THE HELL AROUND. Baby could have been killed and nearly was from what I saw I will never watch another of your videos and will instead try to figure out how to block you so I am not tempted to watch this horrific scene unfold again or any other you may share.

Here's my take. I think the bigger horses don't think the little ponies are really adults. They think the little foal needs a real horse mom. They don't take the smaller ponies seriously, like they are smaller juveniles. But real mom and her posse kicked some ass and changed their minds. She's a great mommy.

  • @Tawny593

  • @eatwhatukiii2532

This video should be shown as an example of bad herd management. I raised foals for decades in a herd situation and never had a problem like this because I took a few precautions when they were newborns. A mare and foal should have a peaceful place to isolate for several days so the foal will form a strong bond with Mom before being introduced to the rest of the herd, and certainly long before meeting another herd entirely. If you watch the video there were a few times when the foal got confused and was following the larger mare, and the mother was having a hard time getting between the foal and the other mare so she could land a good kick without hurting the foal. Gross mismanagement like this is hard to watch. I hope the situation was remedied before the foal was seriously injured. I’m surprised it wasn’t killed with that first stomp of the larger mare.
