Overview of common bump-feed heads and troubleshooting a broken SpeedFeed Trimmer head
Quick comparison of three common bump-feed trimmer heads, plus diagnosing what caused my current head to break
Echo Speed-Feed 400 - This is my head of choice. Its the easiest unit to load line onto and is very high quality.
Stihl AutoCut EasySpool. Similar to the Echo in that you can load line without disassembling the head. Unlike the echo the design of the winding mechanism makes it hard to grab and turn.
Troubleshooting a broken head. My SpeedFeed stopped advancing line. This could be caused by dirt and debris getting stuck between the spool and the "top-hat (technically its called the knob)", but a quick disassembly and cleaning did not help matters. It turns out the hub had mushroomed ...

Trimmer Showdown - Consumer vs Commercial
Просмотров 1464 года назад
"Unfair" Comparison of an Echo SRM 230 consumer grade trimmer vs a Stihl FS-131 trimmer. The echo was my first trimmer and at the time I wasn't sure if bigger was really better (or worth ~2x the price). After a couple years of using the Echo on heavy brush I decided to upgrade to the Stihl and I haven't looked back. Though it would be interesting to do a head to head and talk a little bit about...
BladeVsLineVsClippers

Showing the difference between the three common trimmer attachments; line, blade and hedge clippers. Line (1.05) is my first choice. It handles most of the vegetation until you get to mature bushes/trees. There is no fire risk that a metal blade would cause and you can trim at ground level and over rocky terrain without worrying about ruining a blade. Also you get really good mulching and dispe...
Overview of Clearing Defensible Space to Reduce Fire Risk

Brief overview of what defensible space is and how to seasonally clear land to reduce wildfire risk. I am clearing a property in southern California and compare native vegetation vs areas that have 1 and 2 years of post clearing re-growth. The goals of defensible space are 3 fold 1. Eliminate sources of combustion within 30 foot of dwelling 2. Reduce fuel load through selective clearing 3. Redu...
Brush Remediation - Thinning large laurel sumac

That time of year again in southern California to clear defensible space. Video start with a brief overview of what properly cleared vegetation looks like. Then I turn my attention to a thicket of laurel Sumac that has grown out of control and start the process of thinning it out. Tool used is a Stihl FS-131R trimmer with the HL-KM 145 degree Adjustable hedge clipper head attachment. Not a chea...
Clearing defensible space to reduce fire risk

Clearing defensible space to reduce wildfire risk at a property in southern California. The goal of defensible space is to reduce the ability of a fire to "ladder" from ground vegetation up into the tree canopy and to reduce the amount of vegetation available to burn. In this video I will be using a hedge clipper attachment to thin out some Sage and Laurel Sumac (Malosma). I am aiming for a 50%...
Building a Natural Rock Landscaping wall

We have a mature Macadamia Nut tree on the property, one of the few Nut species that will grow (once established) in Southern California without any irrigation. I decided to spend some time landscaping the area around the tree. Cost on this project was about $20 in mulch and a couple days of hard-work. Rocks were sourced from the property. With Corona Virus shutting down the gym, I had to get m...
Testing a Stilh hedge Clipper Head HL-KM 145

Testing out a new head for my line trimmer. Stihl HL-KM 145° Adjustable Hedge Trimmer, on a FS-131R trimmer. Clearing the brush from the property here in Southern California has been a chore this year due to the generous rain and very mild spring. I normally run 1.05 line, but that runs out of juice on some of the thick scrub. California Sagebrush (Artemisia californica) and California Buckwhea...

Short time lapse of more brush clearing. The line trimmer makes pretty quick work of this section.
Testing out a new brush blade

Testing out a brush blade on my trimmer to thin out some laurel sumac. This looks aggressive but is necessary to reduce wildfire risk and this variety of sumac is extraordinarily hardy and will regenerate from the remaining root stock. Initial review of the brush blade is that it works well on soft wood vegetation. It does not work well on dried wood (deadfall). Also the small diameter means th...

More brush remediation from a property in Southern California. Had a heck of a day with my trimmer head getting jammed or having the line break off inside the head. Called it quits before I got too frustrated. The ground here is too rocky to try to use a mower. 1.05 line on a string trimmer usually makes quick work of this section.,

Time lapse of work done to clear a fire perimeter around a property in Southern California. This section of the property is always a dilemma as it is flat enough to do the rough cutting with a mower - but I would still need to do a final hand trimming. A mower might save 4 hours of total work a year, which makes it hard to justify. The mustard weed has been out of control this year thanks to a ...

Time lapse of work done to clear a fire perimeter around a property in Southern California. The foliage looks green now, but this is the end of the growing season. By July this will be brown and dry. Goal is to thin (but not remove) the native vegetation as much as possible to reduce the fire danger come fall. Tool used is a Stihl line trimmer with 1.05 line.
