Just an Old Git playing with his Moog Toys. A little bit of ambient music that will lose you 5 minutes of your life that you'll never get back but I enjoyed producing it anyway. Look out for the interruption at 05:02 when my ever-loving wife kindly asks me if I'd like a cup of tea and a peanut butter sandwich - I really must put up an 'ON AIR' sign outside the studio..... Sequenced on a Doepfer...

A tutorial on how to use the MOOG Theremini to control a synthesizer using MIDI
Просмотров 4,9 тыс.2 года назад
The MOOG Theremini is a very capable and fun instrument played just on its own but it also has the propensity to make an excellent input device for an external synthesizer. Unfortunately, its MIDI implementation does not allow for MIDI Note data which is quite an impediment! However, there is a CV output on the rear of the instrument that does send Note data but sadly, not a GATE signal so agai...

This is an experimental ambient piece produced using a Moog Theremini instead of a sequencer or a keyboard to control a Behringer 2600 synthesiser. Background drone and 'wind' sounds produced by two Moog 32s. The recording was made in a single take having been mixed externally by a Mackie 1402VLZ4
Moog Theremini controlling a Behringer 2600 ARP clone
Просмотров 1332 года назад
I have been experimenting with controlling my ARP 2600 clone with my Theremini. The Theremini doesn't send note data over MIDI which means that sending both Note CV and Gate to an external synthesizer is not easy to achieve. However, I have used two modules in my Eurorack system to achieve this - I have two Expert Sleepers Disting 4s and I run a Quantizer on one and a CV to MIDI converter on th...

Black Hole Journey - Experiments with Moog Modular Simulation

This piece is rather long but it was an exploration in trying to produce some typical MOOG modular experimental sounds from the 70's using 2021 MOOG components. Recorded in a single live take using:- Doepfer Dark Time analogue sequencer and 2 x Mother 32's for the background 'melody', Subsequent 37 for the bass, Subharmonicon for the 'chords' and DFAM for the 'percussion' that comes in at about...
Trance - First attempt!

Trance music is famous for its changes of pace with soft melodic almost 'classical' sections interspersed with raucous full-bloodied dance pieces. I am no musician so I am taking a 'modular' approach to producing my first piece so I have started with the 'plucky' bits. Where to go from here? That's the challenge .... Instruments used:- Spire plugin for melody, Subsequent 37 for bass, TR-8S for ...
Cèilidh with the Moog Subharmonicon

The Moog Subharmonicon is such a versatile instrument - a bass run one minute, a drone the next and ambience by the barrow-load another time but a Cèilidh? Well to my ear, that is what this jam turned into! MOOG DFAM, Mother 32, Subharmonicon, Plaits and Disting 4 all played a part here.........

From Pink Floyd to Sweet Ambience in two minutes
I also missed these wonderful sounds from the Theremini, which is why I didn't buy it until now. ✍️🤯🤩 I'm a complete beginner, but I really want to learn to play the theremin, but I don't like its squeaky, screeching, unnatural sound. Could you help me give you an idea how I could get started with a small financial investment and make the Theremini sound so nice and soft? Thanks for the help! ✍️
Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be an easier way to do this although it can be done with only one Disting 4 if you don't need to output MIDI from the quantizer! The minimum requirements , therefore, would be a small powered Eurorack case like the Doepfer A-100 LC-1, a Eurorack quantizer module like the one in my video (a single Expert Sleepers Disting 4 instead of the two that I used) and a small monosynth that can be controlled by CV (control voltage) like the Behringer Crave. The key to this is that the note CV from the Theremini is sent to a quantizer that not only quantizes the input voltage but also generates a Gate output on every note change.
Very nice!
Thank you, I’m pleased you like it
That’s awesome. I don’t have the faintest idea of most of what you just said but if there’s a way I can get my theremini to sound like that, it’s simply the stuff of dreams 🥰
I am working on a way to simplify this procedure so that it can be done with just software but it is hampered by the lack of MIDI note output from the Theremini. I’m delighted that you like the sound though😊
Hello, dear friend! What a lovely piece, as the sun goes down! Easygoing, calming music at the end of the day!Wonderful musical moment! Wishing you and your family Merry Christmas and a better 🆕 Year! Greetings! LABIS.
Many thanks!! The sunset was photographed on the island of Lanzarote after a perfect day so it was a natural thing to set a piece of music to it!

Wow this is stunning.. What a great jam and set up.. How do you like the Theremini? Seriously considering to grab one Your channel is so inspiring.. New subscriber here!
Thank you very much, I am so pleased that you like this piece of music. I really love the Theremini and find it quite inspirational as I am a very poor keyboard player but this instrument allows me to accompany the music I generate on my modular system. I really like that it not only produces its own set of sounds but it can also be used to play my other synthesisers as well, making it a multi-use instrument.
Good morning, my distant friend. You wouldn't believe me if I tell you, I am so happy seeing you playing the music you love. I feel exactly what you feel, into your music room .The same I do in my room. Keep on.... buddy! ( If may I call you) Have a peaceful week. Labis
Thank you Labis - I may not be very good but I do love being in my music room experimenting with sounds and patches😂😂
Hi there. We are about the same age and......
Amazing! Blade Runner vibes! Just wish the theremini had better conventional connections. No standard MIDI? WTF???!!!
Thank you Loren, I am so pleased that you enjoyed the musical demo. I'm with you, what a great opportunity missed by not having a standard MIDI implementation for note generation. That said, I found a way through using modules that I already had in my rack so, I was fortunate indeed! Take care.
Love it!
Thank you, pleased you like it!
Thank you for sharing this great sound 🫶

Fantastic!! ❤❤❤

Very nice. Thanks for taking us on your journey.
I don’t use Eurorack. How can you go straight into a hardware synth?
Hi Rick, herein lies the issue and the reason for my current connection method - I am only using the Eurorack modules (two Disting 4s in my case) to generate the Gate signal as, unfortunately as discussed in my video, you cannot get both Pitch CV AND Gate from the Theremini at the same time. I use two Disting 4s as I make use of the CV to MIDI convertor in the second Disting 4 but you could use just one (set to quantizer mode) and feed the Pitch CV and Gate out signals directly to your synthesiser and miss out the MIDI conversion. You could probably use a Doepfer 156 module which is cheaper than a Disting 4 but I haven't tried this to confirm as I don't have one. I appreciate that you don't have a Eurorack system and both of the above are Eurorack modules (I am not aware of a stand-alone quantizer) but you could consider building a tiny rack with just a PSU and the quantizer module to produce your own 'stand-alone' quantizer unit to allow you to drive any synth with Gate and CV input. As an experiment, you could patch the Pitch CV output of the Theremini to your synth's CV input and patch your synth's LFO (square wave) to its Gate input to produce a quasi Gate signal but it would always continue to play a note every time the LFO fires. Sorry I can't offer another method.
Thank you. Great sequence. Really enjoyed it and bought me flying back to TD. The 2600 is such a fantastic version of the original and the West Sussex countryside is so inspiring for music creation.
Thank you, Pere, so pleased that you enjoyed my track and you are quite right about the West Sussex countryside, I am very lucky to live here.
Hi , nice music . I just bought a moog theremini . Can you please make a more detailed video wow you interac on the synth with you theremini . Thank you and have a nice day .
Hi Steve, the video that I produced in the following link should help you but if there is something specific that you need, please ask for more information, I'm pleased to help. I hope you enjoy your Theremini - ruclips.net/video/wooxuRn4FjY/видео.html
@@durrgaga Hi again. I'm a beginner . I have my theremini and for now I just bought a little synth , the korg volca bass. I watched your other video and my synth does not have as many connection as yours . Maybe this synth can't be controlled by the theremini ? A link to the korg volca bass ruclips.net/video/PxKC9jhuA3k/видео.html Thank you and have a nice day .
@@stevedulong Hi Steve, the Volca Bass has a MIDI input. The Theremini has a MIDI output BUT it isn't suitable for connecting directly to the Volca as far as I understand it. Likewise, it won't connect directly to my own synths via MIDI which is why I have to use additional hardware as shown in my other video. I had to have two additional pieces of hardware to get my Theremini to play my synth - a Quantizer that not only quantizes the Control Voltage (CV) output of the Theremini and outputs the quantised note data as a new CV but also produces a Gate signal every time the note changes. This gives me a standard Gate and CV output that I can feed directly to any synth that has CV and Gate input OR I can send the two signals to another piece of hardware, a CV to MIDI convertor, which outputs MIDI data that I can send to my synths. Unfortunately, this is a complex process as the Theremini doesn't appear to have been designed for controlling other devices easily! I hope you find a solution that works for your synth. Take care.
@@durrgaga Thank you very much 🙂
yes sir
Thank you!
Really good. Ethereal soundscape reminded me of Jon Anderson's Olias of Sunhillow
Thanks!
Hope you find it useful
Ingenious and rather relaxing to listen to. I too love that preset 'Eire'
Thank you, I'm pleased that you found it relaxing as that is how I feel about it.
What stand are you using with the moog theremini?
I am using an old telescope tripod that I had lying around unused - these are not available without telescopes unfortunately BUT any lightweight camera tripod would work and you would then use a 3/8" to 1/4" adaptor to fit the mounting bush in the base of the Theremini
Thank U Sir! That was greatly & helpfully! 👍
Most welcome, I hope you found it useful
Cool video! I really like the idea of gesural control. Interesting to see one of these in action.
Thank you, Dave - it is quite an unusual experience to control an instrument in this manner but very therapeutic, relaxing and creative
Beautifull Thanks.
Thank you, I'm pleased you like it.
Superb, nicely play, i luv to see a picture of the set-up.
Thank you, I'm pleased you like it. I will be producing a video on how I produced this shortly and I will be sure to include some photographs of my setup for you.
