Anton Rubinstein — Romance, Op. 44, No. 1
While most associate the Rubinstein name with Arthur Rubinstein, Anton Rubinstein deserves just as much recognition not just as a pianist, but also as a composer. Widely considered one of the greatest 19th century piano virtuosos, Anton Rubinstein quickly carved out a sound of his own, with many likening him to Beethoven, going so far as to say “Van II,” a nickname given to him by Franz Liszt himself. His playing was powerful, brilliant, and his technique was impeccable, though he was famous for very frequently playing “wrong notes.” Nevertheless, audience members frequently wrote of going home limp because of the sheer force of his playing. Clara Schumann recounted his overpowering natur...

Franz Schubert - Erlkönig, Op. 1
Просмотров 241Год назад
Undoubtably one of the most recognisable pieces of classical music ever composed, Franz Schubert sets the haunting lyrics of Wolfgang von Goethe’s poem “Erlkönig” to the background of heavy and intense piano accompaniment. Composed in 1815 at the age of just 18, Schubert manages to create an immersion and depth to the work. We feel like we’re truly part of the story, not just listening to it. T...
Fritz Kreisler - Liebeslied (arr. Rachmaninoff)
Просмотров 3312 года назад
When mentioning beautiful pieces that remind the listener of Old Vienna, it seems almost a crime to not mention Kreisler’s “Liebeslied.” Published in 1905 as part of the set “Alt-Wiener Tanzweisen”, Liebeslied has become one of the most famous modern waltzes and is widely considered one of the most beautiful. On publication, the three pieces - Liebesfreud, Liebeslied, and Schön Rosmarin - were ...
Sergei Vasilyevich Rachmaninoff - Prelude in G minor, Op. 23 No. 5
Просмотров 2232 года назад
Rachmaninoff’s “Prelude in G minor.” A stoic, passionate, emotional march which turns into a lovely dream, before finally returning from its lofty abode to the real world. It, along with the Prelude in C-sharp minor, is probably the most famous prelude Rachmaninoff wrote in his career. Belonging to Rachmaninoff’s Opus 23, Ten Preludes, the Fifth one is by far the most famous of the set. The pie...
Claude Debussy - Clair de Lune

Claude Debussy’s excellent use of thematic ideas to create an atmosphere is simply unparalleled. The impressionist composer is widely regarded as one of the masters of composition in the 19th century. This piece from his Suite Bergamasque is definitely one of his best-known composition; and for a good reason. One can truly sense the atmosphere that Debussy wanted to create, a peaceful night ben...
Frédéric Chopin - Ballade No. 2 in F Major, Op. 38
Просмотров 3553 года назад
Continuing the series of the 4 Ballades, I present to you one of my favourites, No. 2 in F. This ballade is a particular favourite of mine due to its incredible virtuosity, use of the “ballade” form and of course, the way Chopin surprises you when you least expect it. The ballade starts off rather slowly, much like a patriotic song. However, soon we find ourselves in the midst of a fiery melodi...
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - Piano Sonata No. 3 in B-flat Major, KV. 281
Просмотров 6103 года назад
Mozart’s 3rd Piano Sonata, in Bb Major, is quite frankly one of the most “Mozartian” works of composition you will ever hear. The bright and beautiful opening to the Allegro, followed by a relaxing and calming Andante, and a final masterclass of classical rondo composition is quite frankly, in the stereotypical cheerful style of Mozart himself. It’s enough to make anyone feel satisfied after li...
Antonio Vivaldi - Concerto for 2 Violins in G minor, Op. 3 No. 2 (RV 578)
Просмотров 25 тыс.3 года назад
Antonio Vivaldi is a name that is often undercredited in the classical music world. Many people only recognise him to have composed the 4 Seasons, however, Vivaldi is much more than that. This Concerto for 2 Violins, Strings and Continuo is a perfect example of this. The counterpoint gleams, the melodies sing amidst the intense complexity of the accompaniment… and yet, it all seems so simple. N...
Johann Sebastian Bach - Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 538
Просмотров 6483 года назад
When we talk of magnificent organ works, we’re talking in the range of Reger, Boëllmann, Widor, and of course... the master himself, Johann Sebastian Bach. Bach was way ahead of his time, especially in terms of his harmony, even though his style might be old-fashioned. Bach wrote 2 toccatas and fugues in D minor-BWV 565, which you all know, and BWV 538, the so called “Dorische”. The two pieces ...
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - Piano Sonata No. 2 in F major, K. 280
Просмотров 6893 года назад
Mozart’s 2nd Sonata is truly the embodiment of the Mozart Style of Composition. Playful, light, airy. This sonata is written in F major, and consists of 3 movements. The sonata is generally considered to be a more intermediate level sonata, as it contains fast sections, Alberti bass and lots and lots of staccato/legato alternating sections. The work is a master class in the sonata form, which, ...
Carl Maria von Weber - Invitation to the Dance [Aufforderung zum Tanz], Op. 65

Carl Maria von Weber’s “Aufforderung zum Tanz” or “Invitation to the Dance” is an 1819 work composed in the Rondo Form. Many people have heard this before, but in the 1841 version by Hector Berlioz which was not for solo piano, but for orchestra. The original version however, is just as expressive as the orchestration and some consider it to be even more pleasant to hear. Weber dedicated “Auffo...
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - Piano Sonata No. 1 in C major, K. 279
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.3 года назад
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Sonata No. 1” is one of the most popular beginner sonatas in Mozart’s repertoire. There are many reasons why this is considered an easy sonata. The first is that it’s in C major and F major. The second is that it’s got simple chords and melodies that can be learnt by most beginner students. Regardless of its difficulty, Mozart’s First Sonata is a joy to listen to, and...

Today I will play this at a final stage of a piano competition. I am just a young boy who had been learning piano for 3 years Yes, I know, a 3rd grader shouldn't play this kind of a piece but for some reason I can do it without much problems (except for some parts like the triplets). Even though the biggest challenge is not playing the notes, but playing them beautifully. This is one of the recordings that helped me feel the piece, I hope I will succeed, even if I don't make it to the top 3 I'll be still proud of myself. Thank You for inspiring me with this incredible performance, best wishes and love from me. I am really nervous, I will probably make a lot of mistakes but let's hope it will be alright. Chopin's music is something way more than just a set of notes. It's an emotional story that is meant to cause certain emotions in the listener. This particular Nocturne is quiet, silent, energetic at a few moments, the beautiful singing voice of the right hand at the beginning leads us into this deep tale Apologies if I wrote something wrong or used really basic words, I am not English, I did my best

The delicate touch of Ignaz Friedman does this piece perfect justice. A great romantic interpreter himself, Rubinstein is exuberant in his writing too, allowing for many accidentals and flourishes, while still keeping the piece restrained. It is easy to see how he was able to inspire Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky with his works. I have been slightly inconsistent with my uploads, but I shall try to change that. Thank you for all your support, every one of you. It would not have been possible without your continued viewership. Any other pieces you wish to see on the channel, please comment below. It’s hard to believe that Schubert composed such a masterpiece at the age of only 18. Some even say that the 18-year old Schubert composed it in only a few hours, sent it to his publisher, and the rest was history. Regardless of the time it took to compose this piece, there is no doubt that this piece propelled Schubert to critical acclaim, and was the world’s first glimpse of Schubert’s extraordinary musical lyricism: something he would go on to demonstrate time and time again in later works. This piece commemorates 500 subscribers of the With Score RUclips channel. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who chose to follow me on my somewhat irregular journey of posting classical music on the internet.
