Tom's dream was to conduct the band at The Salvation Army in Derby. His dream came true on his 24th birthday when he was invited to conduct Derby Central Band during the closing song. Tom took time out to pose for a few photographs, to instruct Bandmaster Alan Losh where his place was in the music. A rousing ovation greeted Tom at the end, he took the customary bow before proceeding to conduct the band in the benediction hymn.
