Decolonising SOAS: Student perspectives
SOAS University of London is currently celebrating it's centenary year: this marks 100 years since SOAS was founded as a colonial establishment in 1916. British Imperialist and politician Lord Curzon discussed the idea of founding an institution to aid the British Imperial Mission to city bankers at the time as a "necessary furniture of Empire." As such
Decolonising Our Minds produced a film to interrogate the colonial history of the university as part of a wider campaign called "Decolonising SOAS". This campaign aims to push SOAS to acknowledge and make reparations for its colonial history.
In the SOAS Students' Union priorities, students voted "Decolonising the curriculum" as the number...

    This is not only a fantastic intro to SOAS as a whole, but one of the only videos I've seen that not only gives critical agency to the students, but especially highlights the deep multilayered ironies of the university.

    There's a strong whiff of Neo-Socialist bullshit here. Universities and academia in general appear to me to have gone mad. Iv'e been watching the Ivory Tower brigade for the past 60 years but it is in the past 30 years that the madness has really become apparent... and it is dangerous, as will be seen in the coming 20/30 years unless sanity returns.

    On the one hand, universities position themselves as bastions of equality and diversity, liberal in their outlook and at the forefront of instigating change in their contributions to knowledge and adding to the experiences of students. Yet, on the other hand, they fail to represent the communities they serve; they continue to be dominated by those from white, middle class backgrounds to the exclusion of others. There are only 80 black professors in the UK compared to 13295 who are white (ECU, 2017).

    Africa was decolonised way too soon. The societies there are not advanced enough for the most part to operate successfully. Hence Rhodesia was stable, successful and civilised, but Zimbabwe has gone to the dogs.

    If you have the luxury of choosing to spend years of your life studying a sociology degree, then you aren't being oppressed. And there's nothing sacred and beyond criticism in academia. Actually if you can disprove someone else's work and reveal previously unknown knowledge you will be celebrated. There isn't any racial monopoly on knowledge. It's bizarre what you are teaching young, naive, malleable minds at this "school".

    i hate how the comment section is full of people that are super ignorant or just plain out racist. i reported some of the worst cases, i hope they stay away, but don't they ever wonder how they find themselves making arguments that they share with people that will literally comment blatently racist things? anyway, the development is really good in my opinion. anyone who says that knowledge doesn't know colour/race needs to sit down and do some very very basic reading on the sociology of knowledge - literally after 10 pages you'll see that you are in fact arguing against everything social sciene has established in the last 20 years. sorry, but your opinion is not valid only because you typed it.

    • @politicalphilosophy-thegre3894
      @politicalphilosophy-thegre3894 6 лет назад

      Knowledge and truth is absolute, there is no such thing as "knowing colour/race knowledge". People have recognised this fact from 3000 B.C in Ancient Egypt, right up until the present day, through the Bible, Plato, Socrates, Aristotle, Isaac Newton and Descartes.

      Alex Cameron I think no one wants that, speaking from my own experience. I think they want to be allowed to engage & participate openly and freely and just be part of the sociocultural experience they were sold when they applied to the university. For that happen there needs a diversity in the management of the university in general to get their voices and desires represented.

    Do you know what the great thing about knowledge is? It cares not about the color of its owners. I could only tolerate the first ten cringeworthy minutes of this video, but I can say with confidence that there is no argument for an epistemological reform on the horizon. Instead, we have a bunch of naive, entitled, professional victims who confuse the essential challenging and evidentialist nature of universities with a place about feelings, mollycoddling and sensitivity. These worthless kids are enemies of decency, freedom, and reason. Indeed, some of these precious products of victimhood propaganda don't even understand the relationship between the financial value of an academic degree and economic demand. Another professional victim is worried about microaggressions - a concept created to fill the highly relevant void between being pleasant and performing a gesture so slight in its meaning that it could only offend the most insecure, overreactive, unreasonable baby. The next snowflake worries about equality. Not equality of opportunity, of course. No, no. Rather, we get the tired old Marxist definition of equality: equality of outcome. Yes, because when you have asymmetric data pertaining to wealth, employment, and education, something must've gone wrong. God forbid that the midget didn't make the basketball team because of his inability to produce sufficient results. Oh no, institutional midgetism is most likely the problem. There's only one kind of diversity these people don't respect, and it's the most important version: Intellectual diversity.

    This is really very good. One thing I always admired about SOAS, was the student body's willingness to critique and self-analyse the university. It is a privilege to go to an institution, whatever its quirks and inadequacies, that has a mission to de-mystify the world for everyone. And where individual students embody that. For those who engaged in that on a big or small scale, I don't think that ever leaves you.
