DeWalt Dust Separator Review: Is It a Must-Have for Woodworkers?
setting the blade to 45 degrees should give two pieces at 45 degrees. His math gives you two pieces that are equal in size.
Mellif safety if its like dewalts should lock the trigger off and on so you can run it without holding trigger the entire time
I haven't tested to see if the DeWalt trigger can be locked in an on position. I will look into that today.
Solid video! Thank you. Gives me some good ideas.
Thank you for the compliment. I enjoy taking older projects and converting them into something useful.
the millif has a centered control , the dewalt ,you haqve to stand on the side and bend over , the dewalt will give you a back ack
Didn't think about that. Thanks for sharing.
Jim, you do great work. Love your videos. Happy New Year.
Thank you Eric, Happy New Year to you too.
Dewalt great tools. There’s a hand garden tiller that uses Dewalt batteries I’m Canadian. I’m surprised that a Nordic country can’t take snow removal seriously. Plastic shovels will last a couple of seasons if lucky. Those snow pushers might be good for the paraplegic that clears the snow from his 4’x 8’ balcony. My drive is 100’ long. I use a large plastic scoop. Plastic!! No choice😢 I’ve broken 3 already. They’re floating in the Pacific now. I have aluminum shovels that I’ve been using for 20 years. So dewalt snow shovel is not for me.
Luckily I do not have a 100' driveway. I have plastic shovels too that I have had for many years.
Jim, DeWalt is always the man.
I hear ya.
How can you review anything without using them
Doing a request by the company that sent them to me. I made them aware that there may not be snow for a while.
wow, great,i like this contrast.I was just about to choose a snow removal 😂
Do tell, which one did you like better?
@TheWoodworkingCorner consider the money, maybe will choose the Mellif,I have many Dewalt tools and they are great. But i also want to try something new.Let me try the first Mellif.
@@huiLI-hv2ci At first glance, I think it's a good choice. Plus you get an extra battery for your other DeWalt tools. Here's the link to it on Amazon: amzn.to/4fzpuOE
Merry Christmas, Jim! I don't need a cellar, because a bottle doesn't last long enough to be stored. Man, the weather in NY looks good for December. Have a great holiday season.
Merry Christmas to you too. Yes, there is a lot of wine in that cellar. He works for a wine company so he needed something that would fit as much wine as possible.
Electric snow blowers really help us a lot in winter. I saw this Mellif snow blower on RUclips and it looks pretty good.
I had an electric Ryobi. To me, it was annoying moving the cord around.
Excellent work.
Thank you for the kind words.
I just purchased the larger version of this- DXVCS003, 10 gal stainless steel tank. Now, I’m researching what vac I need for optimal performance. Finding out that the vac’s CFM is important. I emailed Dewalt today asking what MINIMUM CFM they recommend. Last thing I want to do is invest in a new shop vac & it be under powered & get poor results. Many on FB are recommending Rigid. And after comparing CFM between the Dewalt shop vac’s & the Rigid’s I can see why. Dewalt’s are lower CFM based on what I have seen so far. Thx for the video!
You are welcome. I would tend to agree if going with a bigger dust separator then maybe an alternative to the traditional shop vac would be inorder.
@ Any suggestions?
Excellent re-use ideas. I do similar as much as I’m able. Great ideas. 👍
Thank you kindly for your comment. Happy Holidays
Complete gimmick. That's not to say it wouldn't appeal to a manicured hands homeowner but for the price, performance, and acoustic racket coming out of that (further amplified via the wall functioning as a sound board), you could do far better. First of all look at the quiet 55db dual piston units with a 1800rpm motor, most at a lower price. They have higher max pressure, sustained CFM volume, larger tanks, as well as being light and portable. That red plastic suitcase getup is laughable, but unsettling from a safety perspective compared to conventional compressors where the inner workings inherently present themselves for pre-operation inspection. Not sure what the cooling strategy in the red plastic James Bond briefcase may be but likely one reason for the caution to pull the retractable hose out before use to clear a path for piston head cooling. I expect this regrettable marketing experiment to quickly find itself in the Tool Museum "What WERE they thinking???" exhibit right next to the Craftsman Flex Drive Table Saw.
Your comments are duly noted. I was asked to review this product and yes, I did state that this compressor may be best suited for homeowners needing a compressor for small projects and for tire/toy inflations. And I have stated in other comments that I do use this tool more than the 6 gal. one that I have. Its ability to give me 125 psi in 14 seconds so I can blow down a tool or workstation makes it more convenient than waiting for the 6 gallon to get to any blowing power.
@@TheWoodworkingCorner 125PSI is the cycle cut-out pressure and with a 2QT tank isn't a meaningful performance metric. So at very best the in-use draw down is no greater than 1.8 CFM with the regulator at 90PSI (cycle cut-in pressure). Another problem with this class of small tank compresors is rapid cycling which combined with the low cost fixed pressure sensors yields an early disposal (or custom repair part$) proposition. I can relate to the "need usable air quick" motivation yet 14s isn't zero either. The near universal approach to provide this is a real shop compressor ideally with a per cycle automatic tank drain. Alternatively for tire inflation, blow gun, etc.. use tankless air compressors are available, most notably for the air brush market. Details remain scarce on this recently thunk up Craftsman "tool" but from their history I'd dismiss the marketing department HP rating -- relative to the actual CFM @ PSI rating it conveys almost no information.
Your thumbnail says "Painters Paint"...
Oops, I guess AI isn't quite there yet. I should have been more diligent before doing the thumbnail test with an AI created image. Thanks for the catch.
My shovel dont need to charge up. Pretty nice.
As I get older, I appreciate all the help I can get in snow shoveling.
Jim, you finally look cold. It's gonna be 4 degrees in CT tonight. Merry Christmas, my brother-in-arms. From the look of it, Airedales do better than we Earth Pigs. You certainly are smarter and more thoughtful.
Yes, we went from a mild Fall to very quickly Winter-like. Merry Christmas from across the LI Sound.
Basically worthless compressor…returning ours and getting a 6 gallon pancake. .5 gallon tank is worthless.
In the past month, I have used this compressor more than my 6 gallon compressor. Brought it to a client's home to use. Found it so much easier to carry. Having the hose rolled up inside was a bonus. Pretty much any time leaving the shop after doing woodwork, I am using it to blow off sawdust from me and tools. I have used it to blow up an inflatable cover and to inflate a low car tire.
We purchased this compressor and not impressed….it drains from 125 psi to 0 in 5 seconds…the .5 gallon tank is worthless and only way to use it would be in 5 second spurts while you stop and wait for it to charge up every 5 seconds…returning ours for a 6 gallon pancake real air compressor.
Draining to 0 psi in 5 seconds is great. Using it for doing trim work, you get about 4-5 nails before it kicks on. But you don't have to wait for it. If the nailer is set to 90 psi and the compressor kicks back on at 115-120 psi, there is still plenty of air to keep going. It only takes a couple of seconds to be back at 125 psi again unlike a 6 gallon version that would take longer to pressurize again. Is it the end-all to compressors? No, but for convenience and small jobs, it works for me.
No it’s not. Bought it last week and was disappointed. Underpowered. Quickly returned it and bought a Snapfresh 20V from Amazon. Haven’t been able to use it yet, but from turning it on, I can tell its much more powerful than the Dewalt. I was surprised how weak it was. Never been disappointed in a Dewalt item till now. Another thing…how in the hell do you do a review of something without using it?
This tool was sent to me by the company knowing well enough that snow was nowhere close into the future for my location. They asked for me to "work with it". I do look forward to a real life test and from videos I have seen with it being used in snowy conditions, it looks it will work. As for the Snapfresh, I look forward to hearing how it goes once you use it too.
Anyone figure out how to adjust the riving knife?
No, haven't figured out that one. I will look at it later today.
@ did you ever take a look at it?
I'm just looking for something like this to air the tires of cars and bikes quick and fast. Any reviews/video on doing your 2 vehicles in the driveway?
No sorry, my wife's car's rear tire needed air one cold morning. It worked great. After having this compressor for a few weeks now, I must say I like it a lot. It's so convenient compared to my other compressor. We also have a hot tub cover that takes air, it was low. Filled it up with no issues.
Jim, that's some great weather halfway into December. We were just discussing a system like this today down at the lumber yard. Very timely and I do like the Yellow and Black.
It's footage from my wine cellar build. I finished the build about a month ago, still working on the video.
Thanks for sharing
Thank you for the comment.
The best snow removal tool is my son.
Armed with one of these :)
But it does a lot of whining noise before starting it 😅
So does my kid before I send them out to shovel snow.
How wide is it exactly?
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. It measures around 25" tall by 15" wide (that includes the handle on the side).
How'd you get the yellow hose with the 12 gallon?
lol, I don't know, it was sent to me that way.
Why not just get a garage door opener that has battery backup included? Would last longer than a UPS.
I would think the battery in a UPS would outlast the battery backup in a garage door opener. And since my garage door opener does not have one, this was a less expensive alternative. Additionally, I have it connected to my sprinklers system too. Not that I would be running them during an outage, but saving me the hassle of having to reprogram them in the event of an outage.
I was looking for something to easily store my air hose and your video came up. Good idea. Thanks so sharing.
Thank you for commenting. Prior to this, I would just roll the hose and have it sit on top of the compressor. So much better now.
Jim, look at you. Are you using AI in these videos now. Man, you're too smart for me to hang around with. I've been debating whether or not to get one of those compression bits, but I'm a bit leery. Seems like voodo to me.
Haha, I have had AI helping out for a bit now (no pun intended). Seriously, the compression bit cuts smoothly and with minimal tear out.
Thanks. I just bought a returned saw with no instructions in the box. It took hours of watching to find your instructions about how to adjust the trunion.
Sorry it took hours to find it but I am glad that I was able to help.
Good tip, Jim. Thanks.
You should have seen the mess I made today. Using that board definitely helps.
Perfect, this method works with spindles very well also.
Absolutely :)
Ciao, funziona anche per la cenere della stufa a pellet?
Sono sicuro che puoi. Lo uso per la segatura fine senza problemi.
@TheWoodworkingCorner Grazie
Happy Thanksgiving, Jim. You know I enjoy our stuff because you prove that it is the craftsman and not the tool that makes the project. I'm looking forward to the new year of your stuff.
Thank you kindly, a few project videos coming up.
Jim, Happy Thanksgiving. Enjoy a nice Sassicaia.
Hey Joe, Happy Thanksgiving. I'll have to ask the client if he has any in his new wine cellar. Cheers my friend.
only happens on bad calibrated tools
Not true, if the infeed and outfeed were longer, it would help. Having the piece supported on an even longer board would prevent it too.
The Downfall of all these newer vacuums for the last 5 years or so they don't have a screw on hose. They got the dumb clip on hoses need to complain about those. The screw on hoses are much better.
I guess I can recall many years ago with the screw-on hose. The clips never bothered me, I could pull the hose and the vac around without it coming off.
Oh well, it wasn't that great, I'll take it off you hands for $50, lol, thank you for your comparison.
Hmmm, thank you for commenting. I sold my old one and have kept the Stealthsonic. I'm still highly impressed with its lower sound output than a traditional shop vac.
Craftsman is crap
I appreciate the opinion. I did a field test with it at a clients' home and this compressor passed for me. I'll have a follow up video for it shortly.
Not for every application, but it’s a cool addition to the workshop!
Agreed and stated in the video.
Anyway to have the regulator at the compressor? Seems unnecessary to have it at the tool end
I thought the same thing, if at the end of a tool, then maybe it's not in the way?
not a real review. you never actually used it, no mention of CFM, e tc etc. 30' of hose , what ID ? how stiff is it when cold? it looks like crap hose, with you wearing t shirt I suspect its at least warmish. the hose looks somewhat stiff. a 1/2 gal tank is virtually nothing to fill , . no way thats anything more than a consumer gimmick . oh, and craftsman are not the tools they once were. not even close . I'd be curious of the amp or watt draw) the only real way to tell if they are accurate with HP ratings. I don't see that as a viable option for trimming a house, unless you're just doing a few sticks
My first real test will be this week as I am in the middle of a client project where I will be trimming a bunch of shelves. I will be able to do a follow up to it. The CFM is 1.8 at 90 PSI whereas a typical 6 gallon compressor is about 2.6 CFM. It's not a replace-all type of tool. Its size and portability is what makes it unique.
It sounds cheap, and if I have to pull out 30 ft of hose before I pressurize it, I could just use my Campbell-Hausfield 1.0 g pancake with a coil hose and my cord reel.
The instruction manual states to pull as much hose as needed, then pressurize it.
This ticks so many boxes for a garage compressor. They aren't lying about the power of the motor if it'll pressurize a half gallon tank in 14 seconds. My 1 gallon hot dog take several minutes to pressure up and it doesn't have 30 feet of hose. Stanley B&D is definitely making the most of the Craftsman brand. Finally, my Makita LXT portable inflator can just be for roadside emergencies. Does this have a tank drain somewhere? Compressors love to corrode from the inside out if they're using a steel tank.
Agreed, the speed of it was impressive to me. And other applications would be to have as a tire inflator for those who take their trucks to the beach. As long as you have a 110v access in the truck. Yes, there is a drain valve on the left side, bottom of the unit.
Perfect! Now when it blows up due to interior corrosion it’ll be at face level 🫡💥
Not that I want that to happen 😬 you seem like a genuinely good guy. Commentary on the danger of air compressors only 🙏
Well I appreciate you not wanting it to blow up in my face :)
@@TheWoodworkingCorner actually I may have missed it in your review: is there a drainage spigot on the tank?
@@UXBenbottom left on the unit.
Yes, it was a quick point, but it's there on the left/bottom of the unit.
Unfortunately, the Craftsman that started in 1927 isn't the same company as the one today, even Black & Decker isn't even close to what it originally started as. Both made premium tools that were affordable to all users and now, they are Chinese made mediocrity that are extremely difficult to warranty. The Craftsman now goes up against Dewalt and B&D will not allow Craftsman to even come close to competing with Dewalt. Craftsman, Black & Decker and Stanley tools were once found everywhere and now you can barely find any of them. Its unfortunate. That compressor is a cool design though
I don't deny the comments you made here. Many companies don't make products like the way they did back in the day. I too thought that the design was cool and will get its use in and out of the shop.
You didn't show the compressor at work so I still don't know how many nails before the compressor turns back on. How many tires from flat to full?
And how loud
No way this is meant for a nail gun.
I will be bringing to a client's home tomorrow (10/30) to do trim work. I can do a follow up video of its performance. As for a blower, it's a couple of seconds before the compressor kicks on again. With only a 1/2 gallon in the tank, doesn't take much to run low. At the same time, doesn't take much to fill it again.
Compared to a 6 gallon compressor, it's a lot quieter. I didn't do the comparison. I'm not a fan of watching or hearing videos of saws, compressors, planers at volume.
Brad nailer, yes, framing gun, no.
