This literally happened to me with a Skeleton Captain map. Except, the geyser appeared just as I started to dig. So, as soon as I saw the barrel emerge, I was like "Aw, crap" before being blown sky high. I had a good laugh about it on the ferry, though.

Devils roar is just overall way too much BS. The volcano's are hardcoded to hit your ship after the first few "warning" volleys, the geysers are hardcoded to spawn ridiculousy close to the player and in high numbers around the player. It's totally immersion breaking. How the hell does anyone bury anything there for us to find in the first place?

Geysers will appear where you are standing, where you were standing, and where the game thinks you are going (like to dig up treasure). They are a terrible mechanic and whoever came up with them and how they work need a buckshot facial.
