why healthcare is racist

Captioned video on Facebook: 100001289134617/videos/3848295128556754/ Racism is an inherent part of the structure that built our healthcare system. It's our job as healthcare professionals to recognize that, and to actively work against racism moving forward. Being a Deaf Nurse When Everyone's Wearing Masks: My Cochlear Implant Experience
Просмотров 7 тыс.4 года назад
I'm a new nurse in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and use a cochlear implant to hear. I'm totally deaf without it. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, many hospitals are starting to enforce wearing masks 24/7. This is proving to be very difficult for deaf and hard of hearing people, so I've made a video to document my experience as a deaf ICU nurse. CAPTIONS AVAILABLE: click on the CC button for ...

You just verbalized everything I felt during my internship and ICU last year! I will be starting my first job as an RN in the ICU in two weeks and I'm excited to start knowing that those are real feelings and it's normal to feel that way because there's a lot to learn in the ICU!

Another “con” (in my opinion) is that all three meals occur on day shift. Granted, ICU patients won’t all be able to eat all three meals, but the ones that can eat often need a lot of help, if not complete feeding, and, in my experience, there are no CNAs to help with meals.

Hello, My name is Tina and I am an audiologist in Indiana. I have been a long time advocate for pediatrics and students with hearing aids and cochlear implants. I have a patient who I have known since she was born who is now in her first year of nursing school. She has the Med El Cochlear implant also and is greatly struggling with the connection of a stethoscope for her classes and learning assessments. She is also struggling with gaining accommodations thru the college she is enrolled in now. She would love to connect with you for guidance. Is this possible? I would love to connect to help her in any way possible :) I have loved your videos to help and provide education for others in nursing :)

Ok first of all can yall stop talking about her looks? How pretty a healthcare worker is is so unimportant in the care you receive. She looks professional, clean, and ready to work. Thats as far as we should be looking at her appearance. Shes there to do her job, not be fawned over by people who think she wants to hear about how pretty she is. She worked her ass off in school, clinicals, and work, and to have her expertise and intelligence completely disregarded for "you're so pretty" is frankly insulting. Second, thank you for the advice on shoes. I might try your boots as overly soft-heeled shoes absolutely kill my feet.

Thank you so much for your video. An eye opener for those who think cochlear implants is a 100% cure. It is not. You will always need support. I’m sure it makes your life a bit easier. As for the mask you should prolly encourage clear mask during your shift there are some nice ones out there that don’t fog. Keep pushing and advocating for the deaf cochlear or not. Your speech is remarkable not sure if you were born deaf or what. Good luck to you! Keep those videos coming!

I really appreciate your precious video. I am a hard hearing person and English is my second language and I had a hard time to pass the prerequisites for dental hygiene program. I passed most of my prerequisites during covid when the courses were taught in zoom format . I read the captions which were available after my classes and took notes . I was successful and I was accepted in the dental hygiene program . As a member of disability center I could take 7 units each semester and it was the same as 12 units for students without disability. I had also tutoring. It was very challenging but even I sometimes helped my healthy classmates. Then when after so much pain and my super hard work I was accepted in the dental hygiene program they were completely indifferent and unhelpful regarding my hearing issue. They did not give me any accommodations and the masks on their faces was the ultimate nightmare which made it impossible for me to have a satisfactory comprehension of my classes. I asked the professors to write down those stuff I could not understand even after asking them to repeat that but they refused. My classmates were not better and refused to share their notes. My main issue was during the clinic hours where there were lots of extra noises and the method they were teaching was this way that they just explained the process one time, as an instance X-ray taking , and then students were supposed to do it . With the masks and my usual way of learning that I studied the zoom captions with peace of mind for several times to grasp the meaning of the material during the covid for my prerequisites and then in the actual program I did not have such a chance it was impossible for me to learn and be proficient. I asked for tutoring and they did not provide me. As the result I almost had an accident as I was driving home from the college due to too much pressure on me. I had to take a medical relief and now instead of taking results of my hard work I am in bed until noon . I am very depressed and I see many people are not understanding with the issue of deafness and hard hearing. I wanted to build my life with this dental hygiene career and now it turned to be something destroying me. I do not like going out or talk to people as I experienced how humans can be unkind . I was tortured and no body really helped me . I appreciate if you guide me how I can overcome these issues in front of me and regain control over my life.

I am hearing impaired and wear hearing aids on both ears. I’m going into nursing next month and I was really worried about my hearing loss preventing me from becoming a nurse. I’ll obviously face some challenges here and there, especially with the mask mandates in hospitals where I live. I rely often times on lip reading but your tip of repeating things is very clever. Your video really inspired me and proved that people that are deaf can surely do it, so why can’t I! Thank you for this amazing video! Btw are you facing any challenges currently due to mask mandates or did you face some in the past?

Yep. Clogs are very injurious. If you in toe, as I do, you need the support. I actually work in occupational health and the guys in the construction industry know the secret. I also like your compression sleeve idea because the feet in regular compression socks, I get squished toes and blisters.

I’ve been wearing Dansko clogs for years. I do a lot of fast walking/running around all night, prefer the lighter weight and more cushioned XP 2. I wear compression anklet socks, where the compression is around the arch area of the foot. I’ve never fallen in Danskos, but will admit I have rolled over on my ankle a few times…funny thing is, it never happens when I’m running around, it happens when I’m standing still, or turning. Never enough to hurt myself, but it’s a risk. I tried buying sneakers for work, but I just hate the way they look. I have NEVER seen a nurse wearing lace up boots! The one shoe I hate that everyone seems to be wearing now are the Crocs, and I’ve seen a lot of people fall in them! They are too lightweight, and now the style is the flared out sole…I think they are less safe than Danskos.
