Reading Rural YAL with Dr. Chea Parton
Добавлен 23 июл 2012
Ain't nothin' fancy here, y'all.
I'm Dr. Chea Parton and I started this channel because places to learn about rural YA books are hard to come by for both readers and teachers. So, here’s to the beginning of a channel dedicated to reading and talking about rural YA that depict multiple and complex rural identities in ways that present themselves for careful and critical consideration.
In each talk on this channel, I'll include (1) a short summary of the book, (2) what about it connects it to lived rural realities, and (3) what I enjoyed about them, and (4) how I might go about teaching them. For more information and resources, check out my website literacyinplace.com.

In this episode, I chat with a former Southern Wells student and current Purdue preservice teacher, Emily McCorkle. We talk about all kinds of tensions that exist in rural towns, including race, and our thoughts on t...

Gay Poems for Red States by Willie Edward Taylor Carver, Jr. | Author Talk

Willie Edward Taylor Carver, Jr. is a brilliant poet and a kindred spirit, and I enjoyed every single second of this conversation. I hope rural English teachers out there will listen to it, because he puts language to a lot of issues faced by rural ELA in language with concrete examples that I've always wished I had. We had a big time talking, and hope you enjoy listening. Get Gay Poems for Red...

This is a great series. Really helped me clarify how I want to present this book to my 5th-grade students. Thank you for this presentation.

Incredible! Her work is more than relevant. "The first voice that teaches us to speak" - that's beautiful. She's a gift. :) Can't wait to hear more.
Right?! That part spoke to me so much I ordered Bloodroot right after we finished our conversation. The whole collection is amazing, but I love that one in particular.

List of things I'm curious about: what did/does it mean to a small town when a wealthy foreigner opens a theater? Why does the Christian Church historically show such animosity towards theaters? Why do cross-dressers (e.g. Sullen Johansen) draw so much speculation, gossip and hatred? What did Norwegian vegetarians eat in the dead of winter and how were vegetables prepared to last throughout the winter months? Does heathenism typically care more for non-human animals than Christianity?
These are great questions! Ripe for rich exploration, for sure.
@@readingruralyal Thank you! I'll be interviewing author Carly Heath soon and I'm very excited!
@@ANutterwitch-wq1gj I'm excited for you! She's so great!
This month I read this book with a group of students and we are meeting to discuss it for the last time tomorrow! I'm planning to use your identity of the town idea as part of our discussion! Thanks for sharing!
@gretchenschroeder6101! I'm not sure how I missed this comment. how did your discussion go? Sain is coming out with another book in 2024, and I'm so excited about it!

Hey, y'all! Just watched this amazing conversation in one fell swoop. Very interesting and inspiring. Thanks to you, both. Two random, yet pertinent, anecdotes: 1) I'm not sure if Chea is aware, but I have always dreamed of living in Alaska. I still have yet to so much as visit. I'm a bit envious, I must say. B) One of my favorite Bob Ross (PBS - The Joy of Painting) quotes is regarding Alaska. During one of his episodes he talks about the years he spent living in Alaska. He summarized his memories by saying, "I tell ya folks, when God created Alaska? He was having a really good day." He threw the camera a big grin, then proceeded to "beat the devil" out of his paint brush. Keep being awesome ladies! Chris Parton (aka Chea's Dad)
Thanks for your support, Dad! :) Glad you enjoyed listening. I certainly talking with Monica a bunch!
I enjoyed this immensely! Keep being awesome. -Dad😊

I will put this on my next Alexa app purchase. Little Aaron and I love to be read to by Alexa at bedtime. Thanks for the insight.
