Honestly, it's not too bad of an event... $140 is kinda hard to justify (even tho I boight it anyways), but to each their own

You have to get heirloom shards to unlock the base one and then buy exotic shards to get the rest of the parts you want. I’m pretty sure it’s 5 extra parts for each variant of the katar and each part cost 10 exotic shards. So you would need to get 50 shards to complete one version of the katar. I think the $50(might be wrong about the price) will get you the full katar. But there are also different versions of the katar if you don’t like the original one

It's more the iron sights people care about than anything else, and respawn tries to keep them all the same these days. the frames of the guns are slim though I will say.
