The joke when I was a kid was that Eugene was layed out like someone took a pot of cooked spaghetti, threw it in the air, then decided when it landed that that's the way the town should be layed out. Construction costs of subways are hugely prohibitive, maintenance is expensive. That's why all the subways systems in North America are only found in major cities and they are all very old and some decrepit, like the ones in New York City. Just looked up that Huizhou is a second tier city. Thought it is third tier city. "Rafa Goes Around" reported on another tier-2 city's subway system, Harbin in North-Eastern China. Very impressive. Tier-1 Shenzhen's subway station looks more like an airport terminal. Breathtakingly beautiful.

Looking forward to your report on the change of culture after returning to the US from China, while the contrast is sharp and fresh.
