Leaving the Box, May 2 2023
This happened May 2 around 6:40 AM. Earlier that night the other owlet was the first to leave the box.
Now it's going to be harder to find them in the woods before they stray too far.

It's stretching maximum occupancy with the owlets this big. Here's a shot from April 29 when the mom stopped for one of her visits which are getting rarer as it gets more crowded. The chicks have been hatched for only 32 days, but they are huge.

This video shows how strange the owlets can look when they sleep laying on their bellies. This video includes a stretch of the legs that are getting stout and taloned. The legs emerging are sort of the reverse of the Wicked Witch of the East under the house.

Here's a video from April 21 that shows the effort that goes into swallowing a vole that might be a bit bigger than an owlet can handle. But with effort, it eventually gets down.

It's getting crowded as the olwets keep growing, especially when the mom is in the box. It's like living in a closet with a coupe of teenagers. Here's an example as they try to stretch in the confined space.

This video catches one of the owlets spreading its wings and then stretching its body high and puff itself out twice. This makes the owlet appear much larger and imposing. It probably also feels good with all the growth they are going through.

The owlets are developing more adult characteristics. The video shows one practicing the head-weave orientation owls use to help triangulate where sounds are coming from.

The babies are developing some adult traits. This owlet is showing the alarm display of clicking its beak menacingly when it hears something that it thinks might be a threat. It's only 18 days since hatching.

Feeding the ravenous babies and both adults takes a lot of effort. This clip shows a cooperative moment when the mom arrives with a bit of food followed immediately by the dad with a mouse. The mouse gets handed off quickly to the mom who gets it to the waiting owlet. Two nights ago the dad brought seven mice and one bunny to the box between dusk and dawn.

Hi Richard. This is not my home. It's a place I was visiting near Pecos, NM. The key here was living in a place with a lot of Hummingbirds, and putting up lots of feeders and keeping them clean and full.

Thanks Todd. I was posting it as an audio clip to go with more extensive pictures on another site where I was selling the guitar, so that's why I didn't show more of the guitar. But I may post some of my other collection later.
