Bringing Back Butte Documentary: The Recovery of a Historic Oregon Logging town
Hello to all of my viewers! For the better part of my senior year at SOU, I solo directed and produced a documentary on the town many Oregon locals know as Butte Falls. It's pretty in-depth about the town's history, its relation to the rest of Southern Oregon, and the social-economic impact of the town and region; all centered around one man and a project to educate local students of the town. This man is Chris Mathas. It was a pleasure to work with him and share this critical story that also pertains to many other places in the Pacific Northwest. The film has already won an Award for Best Oregon Film, Finalist for Most Inspirational Film, and Finalist for Best Documentary in the Oregon S...

There are no native trout in the eastern sierras, including the golden trout. They have all been introduced by stocking.
@@user-lu5hf3ub2v Come again? You want to mention the Lahontan Cutthroat of the East Walker River Drainage, or the Paiute Cutthroat Trout of Silver King Creek, or the Kern River and Volcano Creek Golden Trout? There’s so many. I’m a fisheries biologist fyi.
@@redbandcreative Guess I should have mentioned that that was according to my father in law who worked for CA fish and game at the Hot Creek fish hatchery
So beautiful.Glad u guys ate some of those beautiful fish.I would have brought some back home to eat also.
Nice video, but I found the music very distracting.
Pro-tip reintroduced fish species are "wild" that were endemic (native) to the area.
Synergy! For the puffer in you🥳
The grouse at 0:45 is a Sooty Grouse (Dendragapus fuliginosus). Several characteristics distinquish it from a ruffed grouse. The spots on the underside of the tail and the grey band on the tips of the tailfeathers are some 0:47. The display pattern on the forward side is another 0:48.
Wow. Very good work.
Thank you so much!!!
What month did you guys head up there in?
We were there in late August! It was a beautiful time of year. The weather was perfect!
Great work Kaden!
Thanks Brandon! I really appreciate it :)
Great documentary....but if you are going to post this public video, but claim the location is a secret, well, that's what the self-anointed do. The rest of us just shlep along...without our university educations and attitudes...just a thought. Thanks for listening...
I made a promise to a friend who gave me this location; it wasn’t mine to publicly announce.
I used to live not all that far from there & back then never knew what was up there till I moved away 26 yrs. Ago. I miss my home there & the beauty that lives there
I moved to Vermont a few months ago, and I already miss the wild of Oregon. I’ll keep coming back every year from now on :) Amazing place
Itd be great to see more fly fishing films like this one.
I really appreciate that. I’m hoping for these next coming years to be adventurous for me as a filmmaker. Hoping to get back to my roots in fly fishing and native fish and create some really interesting and educational films :)
Im shocked with how under rated this is?? You have really good shots, and you made this for a good reason. Good job!!
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it. I hope to do more documentaries on trout in the future. For now, I have another one I just uploaded on a logging town here in Oregon. -Kaden

Very, very cool video. Thanks for creating and sharing! ✌️🎣
Okay but how many of them did you actually hook in the mouth?
I agree, some people get their grins and giggles from Butt-hooking trout that they can't figure out how to catch. It's super sad and ultimately damages the trout to the point that they could die from infection in open wounds.
It was a well done video, and it’s a neat part of the country, but the Kigers, while recognized as being closely related to the Spanish horses, are not the only such herd in the U.S. There is the Pryor Mountain herd in Montana, the Cerbat mustang in Arizona, and notably, some of the wild horses roaming the outer banks of the Carolinas. Following the Indian Wars the US killed most of the tribes’ horses, and a myriad of small ranches were settled all over the west. Many of these went bust following WW1 and their horses turned loose. Most mustangs are feral descendants of these farm animals. So, Spanish mustangs are unique.
Really well done Doc! I’ve researched the lake but haven’t been yet. Soon enough though!
The Sierra Nevada is a beautiful place. Please don't sully its name by pluralizing Sierra which in Spanish describes a range of mountains with ridge that looks like a saw sticking up in the sky. It's so bush league and irreverent to miss the meaning in this name. Did yah fall asleep in class at SOC? There many sets of mountains with sierra in their name on our globe. Such a beautiful piece of work with a scratch in it. Best of luck at job that many others who have gone before with lesser tools...realize that and we move forward as humans.
We agree in a way with what you are saying. Remember, we made this film when we weren't even legal to drink yet... Myself, Kaden, am two months from graduating with a BA in Env. Science & Policy; I understand the coliquilisms. Also remember the history behind the Spanish and the genuflection they caused the native people in the 1600's in California... Sierra Nevada is not the true name to the native tribes such as the Paiute or Washoe.
Good then...best of luck
Thank you for this beautiful video, and for not naming the first location.
Of course. Discretion is something valuable for amazing locations.
Thanx guys! That was a great video. I live in rocky point and ski it. See you in there when the world ends
I like freedom wild
Glad you do!
Hey, fellow southern Oregon people!
Humans ruin everything, nothing is "improved" (ever) over what nature has created. Virtually ALL of the places I fished as a young man are now utterly ruined, polluted and spoiled by careless humans. Nature needs to be left alone, she doesn't need our "help".
Unfortunately as a scientist, I wish that was true. It’s to the point where only we can help clean up our messes, then leave Mother Earth to regain her strength. It’s all we can do.
Great video! You guys should check out the Hells Canyon area here in northeastern Oregon sometime since you appreciate spectacular landscape. Hells Canyon is truly awe-inspiring.
We'll add it to our list! Thx Raven
Well done. Very nice piece 👏
I love your videos. As a fellow resident of southern Oregon, I appreciate the places you document in video along with your storytelling. Keep 'em coming.
We appreciate the love! Stay tuned-Hoping to film mountain goats in the John Day area and catch three native trout species. Later this month ;)

Thank you so much Raina! We still have a lot in store for this film.
These are some awesome videos! You have such a good eye for shots and the overall story line was really put together!
Thank you so much, we're glad that you like them!
What lake did you fish I live in the Bay Area and my dad really wants to catch one with out having to hike that far and you didn’t seem to hike that far
Bass boy billy Well it was actually 9 miles with over 2000’ in elevation gain, and since we had help with finding this lake, it’s a secret :/
I would love to catch one to do you know anybody I could talk to that might help with finding a spot. Any help is appreciated
@@noahnicholas4627 there are loads of resources online anyone can google. Also checking in with local fly shops in those particular area(s). You’ll get solid beta. Cheers!
