Another Gerry and Silvia Anderson show I never knew existed. I always knew of Thunderbirds, Stingray and Captain Scarlet, and recently of Joe 90. Have to wonder what other shows there are that they did.

Tales from the Moltoverse - Episode 10 1968 - It was a wet Wednesday afternoon in March when Molto received a telephone call from his friend Barry Gray, whom he'd met when recording at London's Pye studios in 1966. "Molto, are you busy for the next few weeks?" Gray inquired, before steering the conversation to a mild grumble about Lew Grade and his lack of patience whenever he wanted something done quickly... Barry Gray was a well respected composer in the business and most notably the "House Composer" for Gerry Andersons Century 21 film company, creators of smash hit puppet shows like 'Thunderbirds' and 'Captain Scarlet' . " So Gerry's making a new show and Grade wants the Theme written fast so he can show it to the American Networks in May," he continued in his soft Lancashire lilt... "He's over there for summat else and wants to kill two birds wi' one stone, the cheapskate!" "That's how Lew is unfortunately" replied Molto, wondering where this was going... "The problem is, I've got three more episodes of Scarlet t' score before that" added Gray, "An' then I promised me wife I'd tek 'er away on 'oliday... I just don't 'ave time t' come up wi' owt before then!" "I see your quandary" said Molto, sniffing the sweet scent of more work, "Is there anything I can do to help?" "Well Lew likes your work, as do I, and I've spoken t' Gerry and 'e's okay wi' it too... So if you wanna write summat that'd be grand! Oh an' the shows about a fella that can shrink an' fit inside a suitcase... It' called 'The Man in a Suitcase' or 'Alex Atom'... Gerry 'asn't decided which yet. You can borrow me Solovox if you like, it makes very futuristic sounds!!!" "I'd be more than happy to, Barry" an enthused Molto proclaimed! Tales from the Moltoverse - Episode 10 1967 - It was at the height of the Summer of Love when Molto was first introduced to Photographer and jazz aficionado William Claxton at a Kenny Clarke & Francy Boland gig down at Ronnie Scott's. Claxton was the husband of Peggy Moffitt, one of the decades most iconic fashion models and muse to the legendary avant-garde designer Rudi Gernreich. 'Listen' said Claxton in a deep Californian drawl whilst endlessly clicking away at the shutter of his camera, 'I'm gonna be filming this cute little short for Rudi, Peggy's modeling his latest collection.' He continued shooting the band on stage, never once taking his eye from the viewfinder... 'It'd be great if you could rustle up some music for it' he added, 'something jazzy but maybe with a nod to what's happening right now.' 'Have you heard that tune by Procol Harem?' asked Molto. 'Yeah I sure have' Claxton exclaimed, turning away from his task and looking Molto straight in the eye, 'That song is the sound of now man, Peggy loves it too!' 'Maybe I could do an arrangement of that?' 'Hell yeah,' Claxton replied, 'and come over to New York, my treat... come watch us film it!' 'It's a deal' Molto smiled, as the two shook hands vigorously...

Tales from the Moltoverse - Episode 9 1967 - This year also saw the release of a film scored by one of Molto's biggest influences, Henry Mancini, who composed the theme for Blake Edwards' swinging dark comedy 'Ghost Town'. The film tells the tale of Fred & Daphne, a young & hip couple who move to a new town after Daphne inherits an old house from a long lost Aunt, only to discover that the town is populated by dead people! Whilst in your universe Edwards made the Pink Panther films which spawned a cartoon series based on the opening credits, Ghost Town's equivalent title sequence was the springboard for the 'Scooby Doo' franchise. The Great Dane does appear in the movie (he is the first to "sniff out" the dead people) but was not deemed important enough at the time to make it into the animated introduction. (Interesting fact - In a classic case of "Muse mischief," the Pink Panther theme tune was given to the author of Ghost Town in your reality... none other than Mr. Jerry Dammers (we'll get to that in good time, Dear reader)! MOLTO MANTOVANI is a Multi-instrumentalist Film & Television Composer... FROM ANOTHER DIMENSION!!! Tales from the Moltoverse - Episode 8 1967 - The beginning of the new year saw the first of Molto's royalty cheques start to trickle in, and he was now a fully fledged film & TV composer. His new contract with Dick James and the success of 'Impossible Mission' on both sides of the Atlantic brought another comission to the table, entertainment mogul Lew Grade wanted a theme tune for his new show 'A Man of Action' (known in your universe as 'Man in a Suitcase'). Grade was looking for a fast paced, brass driven number for the show... Molto was only too happy to oblige! (Interesting fact - The Moltoverse had it's own "Man in a Suitcase" of sorts, but that's a completely different kettle of fish... All will be revealed in a future Tale from the Moltoverse!) Tales from the Moltoverse - Episode 7 1966 - With his palmarès growing, Molto Mantovani had been offered a contract with Dick James (a fellow musician who had become a music publisher and agent... and most notably co-owner of The Beatles Northern Songs publishing arm). Within the month Dick had a job on the table, a dark comedy starring up & comers Susan Hampshire & Tom Adams... "It's only got a low budget but the director says you can do whatever you fancy, as long as it's not 'Comedy Music', something wiv a bit o' class!" he said in his affable but brusque cockney accent whilst punctuating the air with speech marks. "So I've got carte blanche on this if I take it on?" asked Molto. "Don't use yer bleedin' fancy foreign talk" retorted James, "Just write 'im a nice bleedin' tune!"

Tales from the Moltoverse - Episode 6 1966 - Flush from his success scoring the final scene of "For a Few More Dollars" (which Ennio & Sergio Leone had allowed to be used in the initial German only release of the film), Molto was back in London in time for a meeting with Bruce Geller, an executive producer on the U.S. hit series "Rawhide". Geller had seen 'An Enemy of the State' on the BBC and had been enthused by the theme's use of a 5/4 time signature. 'I want that 5 beats to the bar thing' he said, 'But it has to be exciting... and BIG! I want it to sound "Now"'... 'Leave it with me' replied Molto, 'I think I know just what you need!'

At least once or twice a year for the past ten years, I have searched for new orchestral renditions of Smells Like Teen Spirit on RUclips, a sort of personal pseudotradition if you will, and I must say; this is by far one of the best versions I've ever come across. Absolutely delightful.

Tales from the Moltoverse - Episode 5 1965 - Molto had (somehow) secured his first low budget TV theme gig and was starting to think that this might just be the way he could earn a living from music... On a visit home to the Midlands he told his Papa of his achievement, only for Papa to disclose to Molto that he knew a great jazz trumpeter back in Rome, whose son was composing music for Italian films. His name was Ennio Morricone and Papa was sure he would be happy to help Molto get more work... "Let's just say Ennio's Papa owes me a favour or two..." he said with a wink! Two weeks later Molto was in Rome... Shaking his hand vigorously and squeezing his arm, Ennio exclaimed "Your Papa is a GOOD man Molto, and for you I have a gift... My orchestra is at your disposal." "Show me what you can do with the grande finale of a western I'm scoring..."

Teaching himself piano and composition and working by day in his Uncle Matteo's Italian coffee shop. By night he trawled the jazz clubs of Soho, playing his horn whenever he could get a stand-in, absorbing the new cool... Modernism... music... clothes... GIRLS! After a whirlwind romance with a Danish au pair he found himself in Copenhagen, just as Duke Ellington came to town. He knew his Pappa would be thrilled to hear about it (and equally jealous) so he and Lara went along to the show. (Interesting fact - This was The Duke's first ever performance of "Move your Feet" so it's quite fitting that in your universe this tune was composed by Danish duo Junior Senior... Tales from the Moltoverse - Episode 4 1965 - After spending all of his hard earned savings on a flight to Copenhagen Molto needed some extra cash... and quick! As luck would have it, his frequent visits to Ronnie Scott's jazz club had netted him a connection at the BBC. Television director and fellow jazz lover James Cellan Jones was working on a short series about a businessman accused of espionage whilst on a trip to Moscow. "If you can come up with something within a week and it's good enough, I'll give you a break" he told Molto, "but NO trumpets, and I want a vibraphone in there... an ominous sounding vibraphone!" "Sure" said Molto, "Not a problem, I'll bring you a tape next week." "Oh and by the way" Cellan Jones added, "It has to be 59 seconds long!" With absolutely no idea what he was doing, Molto Mantovani set out into the cold Soho night, how the hell was he going to pull this off??? He was going to have to beg, steal and borrow the recording costs AND scrape together a handful of performing musicians.... Not to mention writing the actual piece! "Now, where do I get hold of that bloody vibraphone?" he thought to himself.
