Catching Jungle Perch from an Urban Creek | Japan Fishing 🇯🇵
My final fishing session on Okinawa led me to an urban creek that was recommended to me by Scott, a fellow multispecies fisherman. While the target species didn't want my shrimp, when I switched up to bread I managed to catch two new species for the lifelist. Not a bad way to wrap up my Okinawa trip. Thanks to fish_devotee ( fish_devotee), Scott ( sfgo_fishy_photos), and Daiki ( __daikimaru__) for their help during this Okinawa trip.

    I’ve also found that greens tend to be underneath the larger rocks quite often so if I wanted to target a more elusive micro I had to be mindful of the rocks size as going for the perfect ones would reduce the odds of encountering green sunfish and finding darters. Like say a few rocks are around; I’d avoid any that looked suspiciously spacious underneath. Also bends of creeks with a ton of gravel size rocks are usually perfect for darters; I’d often find tessellated in such habitat in NC

    The eleotris might be a spine-cheek "gudgeon" (Eleotris acanthopomus). But not 100% sure, as there could be similar eleotris around The snakehead gudgeon had some amazing looking patterns. The jungle perch/flagtail is a Kuhlia?? Wow, it literally looks like a bassified version of the kuhlia flagtails I was catching in hawaii lmao Might be one of my favorite videos tbh, so fun

    • @TheFishingNomad
      @TheFishingNomad 2 дня назад

      I checked the Eleotris fish and to be able to identify it positively you'd need to check the pores on the top of the head which unfortunately I didn't take pictures of. You might be correct, but there are three Eleotris in the area and if I'm not 100% certain about a species ID I don't add it to the lifelist. The jungle perch is a cool one. In this small creek they stay small, but I've seen some videos from Australia of people catching these that are several pounds.

    Have you heard of iNaturalist? If you haven't its an app/website where you can post your pictures of fish (and all other kinds of life) to. It benefits science and your observations can be used for research purposes. They also have an algorithm that can help you identify species, and there are lots of people that will help you identify them as well. I had never heard of the flame dottyback til the first video where you caught it, and when I searched it up on inat I found that only 3 have ever been posted on the app. I also use the app as a way of managing my lifelist. I think some of the Lepomis species (esp. longear) should be bred as aquarium species. They may not be as visible from above as the better known koi, golden orfes, or comet goldfish, but they are far more interesting in the side view. And if they get too big for the tank, they are probably quite tasty (I have only tried bluegill, but suspect the others are similar) The Deep South (esp. the Coastal Plain) has some pygmy sunfish (not Lepomis, but in the same taxonomic family as sunfish and the black basses) that are also extremely pretty, though too small to eat.

    • @TheFishingNomad
      @TheFishingNomad 6 дней назад

      The problem is these fishes get too big for well over 95% of aquarium keepers and I don't think almost anyone would want to eat their pet. You mention the elassoma genus which is very popular as a niche in the aquarium trade, but I think the ennechantus genus is a nice sweet spot and those fishes would be great in many aquariums.

    Nice fishing. Great series I've never been to Japan but would love to go sometime. 🎣👍

      Thanks. It's worth the trip. Not even counting the fishing, it is my favorite country I've been to.

    Lotta good action (in the first hour at least)! At my local piers, it's kinda similar - the fish could be biting every cast, then suddenly the bite slows down or just turns off completely. Mainly due to a change in the tide, at least over here.

      I’ll often fish a mark without filming and have a great session, go back to next day in the exact same conditions and tide with the camera and it’ll be terrible. The filming effect I guess!

      Yeah it always stinks when the fishing the great and then just dies out of nowhere.

    I've never related to a video so much. Fishing around central Alabama I cannot escape the Rough Shiners. I will go to different watersheds to target specific species and every time I get excited thinking I have something new only to realize it's another Rough Shiner. It's ALWAYS Rough Shiners. Bright ones, dull ones, dark lateral band, dang near invisible lateral band... It's always Rough Shiners. 😂

      Haha I've realized that every area has a fish that is just so common it's not even funny.
