Are those standard pad straps like EE uses, or are they custom buckles from HMG only? Real PITA if you lost or broke one in the future
@@MrModernGentleman they are custom buckles. They are way easier to unclip one handed which is helpful when you have to pee in the middle of the night!
Excellent demo of the quilt, thank you.
@@awartiainen thanks for watching. If you pick one up I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
Did you find the full insert useful or did go with the half insert later?
@@Peripatetic_bum I find both inserts useful for different situations. If I’m by myself I do like the half insert because it gives me a “mud room” area to keep any dirty gear outside of my sleeping area. Other times it’s nice to have the full insert to be able to spread everything out.
Nice video
This is a great video
@@michaelbitcanics8363 thank you!
Nice vid. Almost nobody shows going up Abol. I’ve been to the top on every trail except Cathedral. We did go about 2/3 of the way up one time to help the ranger stretcher out a hiker who was injured on the knife edge during a heavy squall. Our group had just experienced the same weather on that trail including pea sized hail and were recovering at our leanto when he came by asking for volunteers. A fun and interesting day for sure.
Great video it was good to see both setup side by side for comparison
Thanks for watching!
Great inner you can aframe it
That’s really cool. Very smart to know when to turn around. Very inspirational to me who is in his second year of hiking. Thanks for the vid. Yes, I subscribed. 🙂
Thanks Dan have fun out there!
Congrats on your thru hike. I saw a couple other hikers with the Garmin but can’t figure out what they use it for? Does it replace the guidebook? Is it lighter than the guidebook? Or is it for another completely different reason? Thanks!
Hey thanks! I had it so friends and family could track me. And I could use it to message back and forth if I didn’t have cell service.
hey , thx for the nice vids =) , whats your favorite pitch for rain ?
Thanks for watching! If it’s not too windy this pitch works great. If it’s windy and rainy I’ll use a “storm mode” similar to the half pyramid but the head end will be the opening and be a bit lower. I don’t have a setup video for that one.
I bought an 8x10 Etowah Ultra TNT tarp and this would be configuration I would want to do for hanging out underneath while raining. Then retire to my Tarptent Double Rainbow Li parked next door.
I love this setup when the weather is half decent for how much room there is.

Climbing is defined by a purpose, the summit, yet the best moments lurk just before victory because after that there is only the descent. -Peter Drucker, mgt consultant
I’m having trouble with the bathtub floor. Whenever I pitch this tent, the edges collapse in. Any tips?
Make sure the pole is set high enough and pull on the elastic line locs on all 4 corners so there’s enough tension.
Are the baffles sewn all the way through?
What size stuff sac do you have that in?
8 liter. I use hyperlite’s side entry pod.
Hi! How much room do you have left in the sleeping bag?(length wise)
Hey! If I have the quilt up to my neck there is maybe 4-6 inches or so of extra length. It can go all the way over my head if my feet touch the end. I’m 5’ 11
Can you pitch this together as one?
What do you mean?
Yes but you would need to pack it in a bigger bag.
I have used this and so many other configurations. But. BUGS. Holy hell they’re a problem up in the north woods and adirondacks here. This is where most videos could use more info. Bugs are a pretty big problem here into October
No reason this wouldn't work. Its only 2.9 ozs - no floor but its what I'm going with. I'm waiting for the same tarp now. Sea to Summit "Nano" Mosquito Pyramid Net Shelter
@@nedanother9382 would the sea to summit nano net be held up by the samepole that's holding up the tarp?
@@nedanother9382 So the situation is that these "pyramid" type bug nets have a tie out at the very top that will be blocked by your tarp. As I've experimented with this at home, There is no way to "tie" the pyramid bug net up to a tree or erect it with a pole as the shelter blocks the top tie out...and, the pole that is being used to hold the tarp up is - as you can see here in Patch's video, way towards the front of the tarp. But...the bug shelter tie out is pretty darn centered, thus creating the problem. Maybe you can post a video or write back if you find a way to rig this. I'd be very thankful, and good luck to you!
Congratulations!
Thanks!
This just seems so troublesome to put together. Fjällräven and Hilleberg already are all complete, just open and pitch.
It’s not bad at all. Goes up pretty quick.
Thanks for this video. There's nothing out there on it!
Thanks for watching! I’ve had it out a few times so far this spring and it’s been great. Stayed very comfortable down to 40°. Curious to see if I can take it into the 30’s.
@@ColdbrewPatch that's great. I actually just snagged the HMG 20° quilt last minute before a trip to Montana. I'm replacing my EE revelation 30°. The 7D they use is noticeably softer and more comfy than EE. The 1000FP seems great too.

Yes it is! Used it the most on the AT.
Oh that climb out of the NOC sucked. Nice.

Dude, CONGRADULATIONS on your Thru!!!!
Thank you!
I just got one as well. I was thinking of getting a Z Packs but I thought the zippers on the vestibules on the hyperlite were worth the extra 3oz in weight. Not to mention when hyperlite had their yearly sale and it brought the cost down to $550 it was hard to beat.
How are you liking it? I’m thinking of doing the same thing. I feel like the zippers are a must.
What a scenery my friend 🔥🔥
Thanks!
Would you be able to show us a more detailed view of the tub height and the condensation drainage area? Is the height adjustable?
I can but I’ll have to wait until the snow melts and the ground thaws. The height isn’t really adjustable.

Can you make a video of going over the gear and how it held up? Thinking about the same set up as you but cost of hyperlight vs cheap. Don't mind paying for quality please tag me if you make a gear review video/ things you would change vs not doing a at in 2024
I am not sure if I would have enough to talk about to make a whole video. All of my gear held up great with the exception of my sleeping pad.
Thank you for sharing this! I'm sold on Hyperlite DCF material and if I had to choose I would go with the 4. Your video rrally shows the difference in size. What I don't understand: why is the base of these tarps totally exposed to the outdoors? Other than the advg. of a quick setup, I'm not seeing the advg. of this tarp over the HMG DCF tent. Are wind and rain able to get in? Can you chime in on this? Sorry if I sound ignorant. I've just started preparing my section-hike of the AT and I'm looking at the Ultamid TENT (2 or 4) but still can't help wonder why some hikers prefer tarps over tents?
You are able to bring the walls all the way to the ground if you adjust the length of the pole inside the tent. I haven’t used these on any trips yet so I can’t speak to how they perform in rain. I wold expect they will do very well though. I used a flat tarp on the AT last year and that always has some part exposed to the outside and still kept me dry. The inserts for these tents would be a good option for more weather protection, the bathtub floors go up fairly high and would shield any rain backsplash. The UltaMid 2 with the half insert is only a little over 2 pounds. Hope this helps.
The main advantage I see of pyramid tents over conventional trekking pole tents like duplex and unbound is the wind resistance, those tents on the video are more like a four season shelter.
Better have an insert for bugs on the AT!
Nice video 👏🏼
Thank you!

I'm 6'5 and 300 lbs and can get this setup pretty roomy - though theres always a balancing act between headroom and length the weather usually dictates what to go with
