Narrowboat Farm
Великобритания
Добавлен 30 окт 2018
Narrowboat Farm is a market garden in central Scotland, just outside Linlithgow.
We grow a range of vegetables for local markets and specialise in Pick-Your-Own-Pumpkins. We are also a test site for community-owned canal moorings thanks to our bankside location.
We're a small farm with big ideas and we want to share our successes and failures with you through this youtube channel.
Thanks for watching, subscribing, commenting and sharing!

Linlithgow Farmily | Free Veg Growing Starter Pack | How-To Video | Summer 2020
In July and August 2020, Linlithgow Farmily is distributing 500 free veg growing starter packs throughout Linlithgow. This video is the 'how-to' for the veg starter kit and is presented by Jen who helps run Farmily. Thanks to support from the Strengthening Communities Fund (the Linlithgow Covid-19 Community Response), this has been made possible.
Each pack contains pots, compost, seeds and instructions, they're aimed at anyone who might struggle to get into growing on their own, or who's been especially struggling with lockdown. They include simple-to-grow herbs, salads and 'microgreens', all of which can be grown on a sunny windowsill - you don't even need a garden!

The Veg Boat - the historic return of freight on the Union Canal
Просмотров 1,6 тыс.5 лет назад
For the first time in about 150 years freight returned to the Union Canal in Scotland with the 'Veg Boat'. Loaded with our naturally grown produce, the replica clyde puffer 'Wee Spark' set sail from Narrowboat Farm to Linlithgow with it's cargo. Wee Spark is the world’s only one-third replica Clyde Puffer, built at the turn of the century. At the time of building, it gave skipper Jimmy Macfarla...

In our fourth vlog, we take a look at where money can be saved by putting time into something, and where to best prioritise spending money on a small farm. Starting at Campbeltown, with some skatepark building, visiting a disused garden centre where we dismantly old polytunnels, and taking another look around Narrowboat Farm at the things we did or did not spend a lot of money on. website: www....

Spooky Cruises and Pumpkin Picking at Narrowboat Farm, 2018

October 2018 was our first season of Pick-Your-Own-Pumpkins at Narrowboat Farm, near Linlithgow in Scotland. We grew nearly 1000 top quality naturally-grown beauties and they sold out! This video captures the fun we had with everyone who came to pick one. As well as pumpkin picking, Linlithgow Union Canal Society put on a canal cruise to us including an amazing storyteller from Eureka Edinburgh...
I'm ALMOST sold on narrowboating. I've got a question regarding heating the boat? ...How do you heat it when you have to go out tonwork for 8-9 hours and nobody's there? Or when you go to the pub for 5 hours with your friends...and come back to a 30° steel hull?! What if it's too late...like 11pm, and you have to get up for work at 5am - work all day, and leave your dog at home? Yeah...that!
Woodburner, but don't leave the dog inside for hours when its cold
Great vid guys. Is it possible to live on the Caledonian Canal? Thanks
Would like to see the map of the system especially the part your on ! Wood or charcoal heat?
wood buddy
Can you narrowboat to the English Canals? Like is there a river connection between Scotland & England or maybe a coast crossing? Just wondering because after watching several narrowboat vlogs on the English side (lots of canals) this is the 1st vlog I came across on the Scots side. (Note: not from UK, so forgive my idiocy 😁)
only in a sea-going vessel unless you're very brave!!! There is no canal between England and Scotland and you'd be out at sea for about 200 miles!
@@narrowboatfarm6218 Ah thanks! I guess that sums up my knowledge of boats lol Anyway, after seeing all the narrowboat content at the English side, it's interesting to see the canals of Scotland (Lovely place. Been to Edinburgh once. Bucket list still up in the air is Skye & Outer Hebrides ... but I'd like to see that big lock in Falkirk). 😃
This made me smile! Loving your videos!
Hi, came across a recent vlog of yours, liked it,subscribed now started at the beginning 👍 Having and living narrowboat and eating organically also my son turning my 300’ garden into a small organic ‘allotment’ ? I’m really keen to follow your project ad wish you all the best with it 👍😊
Lovely blog very interesting and informative.Best wishes. Xx
cheers William
That's a dream way of life. Me and my friend have been looking at ways to live of grid and the narrowboat is one option we have been keen to explore. We also wondered what the options are for buying land on the canal to make your own mooring and have a bit land with it
we bought land to make moorings, it's a tricky one. Ecology Building Society offer mortgages in the UK for this
Hi. I'm thinking of buying a narrow boat in Scotland. Where is the best place to start? Are there yards, marinas that sell them? I've seen plenty in England but none at home. I'd be looking to live on it permanently. Thank you
the best thing is to have a chat with existing boaters to see what boats are available and where best to moor. I know it's a bit tricky just now. You can send me a private message on here (i think) and i can get you started. The official channel is to look at the 'living on water' website but you'll get a load of pen-pushers slowing you down that way ;-)
Great video, very interesting project. We live on a Nb on the grand union have done for 2 years now and love it but we are thinking of taking our boat to the Forth n Clyde and the union, not sure how much it would cost to get a 63ft from midlands to Scotland but I think it’s going to happen.
Wow! Amazing! We need a pizza night in your boat! Greetings from Costa Rica.
hey buddy, hope you're well :-)
Looking forward to watching all your vlogs 👍😎
@narrowboat farm we are winterizing in liverpool
Absolutely fantastic, best wishes from Caithness, don't suppose you will be passing soon
Nice work, looked like a lot of great veg you were loading the Spark down with. Thanks for keeping the history alive and sharing it. I would have never known about the canals or their story if not for your channel.
Great stuff
How absolutely thrilling! I'm so excited for you & I hope you sold out your entire boatload! Blessings from North Carolina, usa!
Hey friend, glad to see you again! Things are looking great, your weather is a little different than I expected. You cover a lot here, opening up a ton of questions. I'll narrow it down to one. Could you share which part of the business is the greater half? The main crops through out the season or the pumpkin patch festival stuff at the end of the year when people flock to the property? I really like this idea about involving the public in the growing scene and I think its win win for yall and the public. Thanks for the update, I've been curious about your project.
hey buddy, nice to hear from you, i've been following your vids, it looks like 2020 is going to be good for your market garden! The pumpkins win over the veggies by a long way...
@@narrowboatfarm6218 That's interesting, do you think you could do a video in the future sort of telling how you monetize the pumpkin harvest other than the pumpkin sales themselves?
@@paxtianodirtfrog8947 we do pick your own pumpkins where people come and have a farm experience and a boat experience (theres a vid on our channel). We don't sell pumpkins in other ways...
Love all of this, even the weedy bits. Chard is great, kale much less so!
Looks great, well done
cheers Hugh
Congrats! Everything looks fab! Really excited for you & such creativity w/ the different areas including teaching area, ducks, & selling wagon! Woohoo!
thanks :-)
@@narrowboatfarm6218 ur very welcome! Keep up the good spirit!
Absolutely amazing!! Love what you’re doing, so happy to see this!
Spotted the turn off to my house as you cruised past it
great vid thks
Yes, this is a super interesting subject! I never knew about this life style until my feed started pulling up videos after watching one of your videos. I have never been to Europe but have wanted to for years and this is the type of thing that I would love to see. Thanks for keeping it real and can't wait to see the upcoming videos.
i dont mean to be so off topic but does any of you know of a way to get back into an Instagram account..? I somehow lost the account password. I would appreciate any tips you can offer me!
@Quinton Maison Instablaster :)
@Dean Imran I really appreciate your reply. I found the site thru google and Im in the hacking process atm. Takes quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Dean Imran It worked and I now got access to my account again. I am so happy:D Thanks so much you saved my account :D
@Quinton Maison glad I could help =)
I answered my own question and jumped over to your channel. This is great content! I'll be following along. I am fascinated in agriculture across the globe in different scenarios. Thanks for the high quality video!
Nice one - and score with the polytunnel! We're always making similar judgements with our budget - if we can make it ourselves first then we'll try but we also know our limitations and what we're not so specialised at making - then we'll buy it or use someone to make it if they have the skills we're lacking! And yes on the walk behind tractor - my best investment, just wish I'd bought it sooner.
aye it always feels like quite a gamble when a bargain is involved. It could have easily turned into a nightmare trying to free seized bolts and deal with loads of crap but it turned out sweet. I don't know how you've found it, but it feels like you need to learn all the trades to run a small farm, not just learn how to grow veggies...
Great intro, very interesting. Exciting times for you!
cheers Tap, loving your vlogs!
Thank You for the updates. Looking forward to future episodes. I have 1 question. Will there be ballards or rings to tie up to? If not, would the CRT allow for their installation?
Hi Jeff, we're working on the moorings side of the project. There will be moorings infrastructure, not sure what type though. Probably bollards. Up here it is Scottish Canals, not CaRT but they are a similar organisation. Check out www.communitymoorings.com for more cheers...
@@narrowboatfarm6218 Thank You :)
Love this! Watching it whilst thinking about strategy for day job and thinking about my own stuff in the background. Working backwards and being really aware of why you're doing what you're doing.
Glad to have found your channel, via. Your comment on the Lawson market garden (I think). New sub from me, look forward to seeing how it grows and also picking up. Some tips.
welcome :-)
Wow this looks fab!

Great job Iain! I’m looking forward to more of this.
