Many thanks to the Tampa Born and Raised group on Facebook The Floriland Mall located in Tampa Florida was one of the earliest malls in the area. A short history of D.P. Davis who developed Davis Islands in Tampa and Davis Shores in Saint Augustine. His marriage to Elizabeth Nelson ended in mystery and tragedy. What a shame all the stadiums I went to in my youth are all gone including this one
Yes many memories !!!! Thanks for watching !!
What a fascinating history of our beloved stadium through the years. Thank you for mentioning my dad, Tom McEwen
Amazing man!!! I met him once as a teenager in while in a press box at Tampa Stadium and he was so kind ! Thanks for watching, my friend !!!!!
I went in the early/mid 90s when i was around 6. Love this! So many great memories!
Yes !!! A magical place !! Thanks for watching !!!!
Fantastic! There was big interest in all things Hawaii during the late 60's and 70's. Hawaii 5-O was a huge TV hit at the time.
Thanks! Yes very cool era!
Another good one Rex, love oit.
Thanks
Wow Brother where did you find all of those postcards?
lol most are just online I have a few
WOW Rex, once again you made an amazing video. Brought back some memories. Thanks.
Thank you so much! This one was fun with so much history over the decades!
So many memories. I miss Tampa so very much. Not the Tampa of today, but the Tampa of my youth. Thanks for sharing Rex.
Thanks for watching my friend! Yes lotta memories in this video!
My Dad was a low level bookmaker back in the early 70's. One day I accompanied him to the new Floriland Mall to collect from someone who had a store there that was late paying up money he owed from betting on football. After that my dad took me to see the Valachi Papers that was showing at the movies. Every time I drive by there to this day I think of that day;.
Very cool ! Thanks for sharing the memory !
Scientology headquarters are in St.Petersburg, near Tampa. Why didn't they STOP the destruction?
Class of 1995 - Go Big Red! 🎓
Wasn't there a DMV there in the 1980's? It seems I remember renewing car registrations and driver's licenses at a location there. The mall was pretty blighted by the mid-eighties even. I'm surprised to see here that the mall opened in '71 as I thought it was older. I saw several movies there, but teens preferred University Mall or Tampa Bay Center. West Shore was considered more of an older person's mall and it had no movie theater back then.
I think you are correct !
What a great idea. I might have a box somewhere with newspapers and spirit ribbons they might want.
That would be cool !!! It’ll take awhile to set up but it’s in progress! Thank you!
Sadly all our Tampa malls are fading away. Soon WestShore Plaza will be gone and there will only be one.
Yes -- it’s sad to see the passing of an era
That had a great flea market and it was air conditioned inside.
Yes lots of stuff … and good deals!
Thank you for this. I grew up in the 50s and 60s and the Arcade was a constant in my life. Bought many a hotdog and coke at Mave’s and had my driving Learner’s Permit typed out at the DMV just down the steps there. I thought it was torn down after 1976 though. On your future video it would be very helpful if you could manage to show the publication date of the newspaper clippings
Thanks for the idea! It’s not always easy to get the date in but I will try // early April 1976 is the arcade demolition! Stay tuned for more history my friend!
JewelsbyChicGemzs
Very cool
Took my g.e.d. test there in 1984 .
Very cool ! The old school has seen a lot of test taking
Hillsborough High School is still the most beautiful high school in the Tampa Bay area. I graduated from that school in 1978. And enjoyed every day I went to it. At that time the school had gorgeous red carpeting with little black dots throughout the entire school on both campuses . It looked spectacular. Our Hogwarts!
Yes !! So much history !!
looks great
Thanks my friend !!! I hope alls well
My kind of Center!
Yes sir !! You gotta visit when it’s done
Exciting!
Thanks my friend … lots of work still but exciting times ahead !!
I remember eating at that "Big boys" and then walking down those steps to the mall...(around 1987) i was only 19 at the time and i remember thinking how dangerous those steps were.
lol I never did eat at Big Boys but had fun at the mall !
Horrible in 1985 for last minute Xmas shopping. We were stared at, I was about 22 years old and nothing on kiosks in middle of mall, well I remember it empty shelves, not kiosks, like they were really trying to empty their wares out. I think '85 was about ,,the end of that mall...
Definitely the end times … slow decline was in progress
JM Fields was similar to Zayre, the predacessors to Kmart (so nit Sears or Penny's fir general house wares). It was always trashy, M.wards as anchor? When across town West shore Mall with Wolf & Maas Bros. Burdines, Robinsons, later Saks, Old Navy was fancy. All the boutique shops, restaurants,
The allure of Floriland was location if you lived by it
I live in Indiana, but I really enjoyed your video
Thanks for you kind words!! Have a great day my friend
It’s where I saw my first movie. The Apple Dumpling Gang.
It was a cool theater !! I saw one of the Jaws movie there lol
Same here, I saw the original jaws flick there!
Yes!! Scary movie !
Great video! My grandma worked at the GNC in Floriland Mall in the late 70s...I spent many summer days of my youth at that mall! I really never knew how bad the crime was in the area at that time. Cool seeing all the newspaper articles and ads, too! After Floriland Mall we seemed to branch out between Tampa Bay Center, Eastlake Mall, and University Mall. Good times.
Yes those were the days ! Thanks for watching
It wasnt bad back that...its only when it started getting a steady influx of our melanin-enriched friends did the crime rate sky rocket. Been that way ever since.
I used to work at the tower drive in Back in the mid-seventies. what a great time
That sounds fun !
Very interesting stuff. I've lived in Tampa almost all my life (and that's longer than I care to admit) and never heard the story of DP Davis. Thanks HHS Historian!
Thank you my friend !
So the clock doesn’t work???
Last I heard it’s working again recently
A decade before my graduation. I attended Chamberlin until 1973 when I switched to Tampa Bay Tech. I agree with the removal of the mascot as it was offensive to Native American heritage. Is that woke? I hope so! All "woke" means is that one cares for people that do not look like him or her. Is that so bad?
Love is all we need
The McDonalds on Florida Ave! I 'member eating there as a wee tyke. The original golden arches graced the restaurant. It was barren of accompaniments.
Yes amazing how times have changed
Ah, the memories! I remember seeing the original Superman movie (Christopher Reeve) in 1978 at the Floriland Mall. That was when I-75 ran by Florida Ave before being rechristened I-275. Growing up in the indoor mall culture was great. Getting out of humid weather was much appreciated. And the frequent warm rain as well. I moved to California in 1980 and when I came back to visit, no one had explained that I-75 was a bit farther west then it use to be and I eventually figured out I was headin' out of town and needed to turn around. Growing up from 1960 to 1980 in Tampa was enjoyable. 1980 began another chapter of my life that was just as enjoyable. Thanks for the memories.
Thank you !!! Yes the old mall is full of memories !!!
Excellent retrospective of this mall with lots of great ads and articles. As a pinball fan myself, I found that story particularly interesting and amusing. I grew up in the Brandon area mainly, but did visit Floriland a few times through the years. Seeing how much arson, murder and mayhem occurred there was pretty surprising. Again, great work!
Thank you !! I also didn’t know about all the crime!
So many wonderful memories💗
Yes… special times
After Montgomery Wards closed, Barnett Bank remodeled the old store into a data center. It was an extensive remodel, high ceilings and asbestos removal, complete demo of old store. I am not sure when the bank moved out.
Wow I didn’t know that …. It’s a great location still today
Great video & history of one of Tampa's best landmarks.
Thanks ! Yes amazing
I went there a few times in mid 70's and very early 80's. was never packed. Renewed my License there in 1994.
It was a big deal early on and then a slow fade ….
I saw E.T. at the theater.
Yes! Great times at that theater!
Fantastic job Rex. Each and every time you present one of your videos I get to go back in time and relive great memories.
Thanks !! As a kid I recall Floriland as fun times !!!
When did they clean/paint it? It looked stained and gross for a long time. :/
I think recently, although it gets a makeover every once in awhile. The day we went to drone video it looked great, but a week earlier it was rough looking. Great question and good attention to detail!
Thanks. Great memories.
Thanks for watching! Yes fun times back in the day!
This video is so lovely. I am class of 70, so I am an oldie goldie and no longer live in Tampa. It's funny how I passed this tower thousands of times growing up in Tampa and never appreciated it as I should have. Now, I see this video and it brings back sweet sentimental thoughts and memories. Thanks for posting.
Thanks for watching! Yes great memories!
I know you can never go home again, but this makes me very homesick. Thanks Rex.
Thank you my friend ! You always support my efforts and yes -I miss the old days too
May this beautiful tower stand forever.
Yes -- it is iconic -- look for more aerials of the area eventually
I used to go to the drive-in that was there. And of course, had to go to Bo's😎.
@oscarcrouch1341 yes sir! Bo’s is great ice cream!!
You are wrong by a few years. The arcade was still standing in 1980. My doctors office was there and open.
Many memories at that old place
We climbed it in 88 or 89. The ladders were all rotted and rickety being from the 1920's. We knew we were lucky we made it down. The ladders were falling apart as we climbed.
Dang! Yeah that was risky n old tower has lotta stories
beautiful to view our school from this view. Really gives you feel for just how large and beautiful our school is. Loved it!
It’s amazing! These are never before seen angles in some cases! Thanks for your support and Go Terriers!
Do something about the goody goody's drive in. I took classes at Brewster and got my ged at Hillsborough high building near Buffalo and central. You could get in and climb around through the late 80s.
That’s a great idea! ….I love goody goody…..yes the old days at HHS were fun
