All the way back in 8th grade, I made a friend on a Minecraft server. It was kind of a funny series of events, and I'm surprised that fate just so happened to link me of all people. She was jumping around random lobbies, poking fun at people that passed by. She saw me, and shouted out a simple "I love you Tornadodex!" to get a reaction out of me. I thought it was funny, so I played along. We were quick to become friends. That was a fun summer. In the fall of the following year, something changed. We talked less over Minecraft chats and more over text messages. We talked less about what we were gonna do and more about what was happening in our lives. Our dreams. Our relationships. Our faults and flaws and everything that comes with it. One night, we stayed up texting for a long time. We fell in love. I know it sounds a bit silly, since I was barely a freshman and she lived so far away, but it was unmistakable. However, as you can probably guess, it didn't work out. It just clearly wasn't possible. It would take so long and so much energy for just a chance at something. So, it fizzled out rather fast. We left it behind us and continued to be friends. We still played games. We still talked every day. But those feelings never truly left my subconscious. Her and I have been through a lot. Deaths in the family, breakups, anxiety for the future, career plans, finding ourselves for who we truly are. I'm so so glad I got to spend my whole high school experience with her, even if she was never more than words on a screen or a voice in my speakers. She's done so much for me, and made me grow so much as a person, and I did the same for her. I will always remember her as the closest friend I ever had. Now I'm a senior. She's a freshman in college. She has a boyfriend that she plans on marrying soon. She said that she wants me to come to her wedding. Honestly, I can't wait. I'm so excited for it, especially because it will be the first time I've ever seen her in person. And yet, there's still a hint of sadness in my relationship with her. She seems to have already found her happy ending. An ending without me in it. Little 9th grade me never would have imagined that it would make it to this point. She's been with many guys in between, and I've been with many girls, but none of them were like her. She was the first person I can truly say that I loved. Of course I'm glad to see her so happy with someone else, but I just can't help but wonder what if... what if... We barely talk anymore. We check up on each other once every few weeks, but the conversation dies quickly. We've promised to always stay in touch the rest of our lives, which is comforting, but it's not the same... I want to go back... I want to go back to the time that we would spend every day after school on a realm with our friends. I want to go back to those late night conversations where we opened ourselves open to each other more than anyone else in our lives. I want to go back to those simple "I love yous" we used to share every once in a while, both the romantic and the platonic. I want to go back to the way it was. I want to go back to her... Go back? There is no real going back...
