Does learning bass help with playing guitar? (A small rant)

I have a bass I rarely play. But I think it might help with the guitar!

Epiphone - Hummingbird 12-string Review (Unbelievable guitar!)
Просмотров 9 тыс.2 года назад
So good, had to make a video. I'm actually obsessed with this thing. I don't work for Epiphone, but if they keep making guitars like this, maybe I will apply :)
At first I wasn’t a fan of the color, but it’s grown on me and now I think it looks really nice. The sound is always good with high end martins, so no surprise here that it sounds amazing.
Iv had mine for 6yrs . It really opened up after 2 yrs. Iv only set it up once , 6 months from purchase, after initial settling. It's action is low, yet i can slide a g maj open chord full octave, to the 12th fret , clear , 0 buzz... amazing. The tone is killer. My only criticism, is the pick up system is horrible sounding, not really an issue, as i have a ir pedal that could make a cricket bat sound stunning. I have 3 epi masterbilt's, the 12str Hummingbird is easily the superior, my go to , favourite
I picked up the bass 6 months before I bought my guitar and the experience playing bass certainly helped me play guitar, but I think it was helpful because I was(and am) an amateur with no previous experience on strings. So if you were an experienced guitar player I would not bother with the bass guitar.
if you stop thinking of playing better as finger skills as it seams like you are thinking I dont think it would help other than maybe stamina. What it will help you with is knowing what the job of a bass player in a band is and how he compliments both the drums and guitars wich will help your guitar playing when it comes to leaving space for other instruments in the band and knowing how the guitar compliments other instruments. it will teach you better rythm and time feel if you focus in it while playing bass. It will allso make you look cooler if you hang it low, just look at church of missery bassist Tatsu Mikami.
As a guitar player, I enjoy coming back to guitar. It seems very small and my strength is noticeably stronger.
On a technical level, no, it doesn't make you better at _physically_ playing the guitar. It will make you a better musician, however, including with guitar. If you learn to be even an amateur bassist, you'll develop a better understanding and appreciation of the role of the bass in a band, and you'll find yourself paying more attention to bass in music that you listen to, and that will translate to when you're playing guitar with a bassist. That's been my experience as someone who learnt the bass second, hope it made some sense.
100%. It wont make any difference in your technique, they are totally different instruments that require different techniques. But it will absolutely make you a better MUSICIAN if you actually make an effort to learn the instrument.
I started playing bass and let me tell you, the bass does NOTHING to prepare you for playing a guitar. Like the guy said underneath, it's a totally different thing. I like your thinking, but it's not as straight forward as you might think. Interesting video and a great question! All the best!

No it doesn't make you a better guitar player at all( not with the things you've pointed out. Please let me try to explain why. First of all it is a different beast, demands a different style of playing, even using different fingers to shift positions ( Micro-shifting) The space between the frets are much smaller then on a long scale bass for starters. I am playing guitar for like almost 42 years, and I am playing a bass since June 2024 ( a Squier 60's classic Vibe Precision bass) Many guitar players make the same mistake to play it like a guitar( Like you did play some fast runs/scales in your video) Only advantage I have as a guitar player is that I know the names of the strings, and the names of the strings in each position. On a guitar you use 1 finger per position on a string. First 4 frets would be index, Middle, ring and pinky. This however will not work on a bass. I discovered it works better to use Index, and Ring for position one and two, due to the wider space between the frets, combined with micro shifting. You also need to play with alternating the Index and middle finger of your right hand, instead of using a pick( exception for Punk Music and Metal maybe) And a guitar player can't do all of this overnight, it takes time to get used to all of this ( took me 6 months) I also recommend an amp to learn how to play actually hearing the bass. A little amp is suffient enough, like a 30 watts combo. When I started on bass, I decided I wanted to play like a real bass player, and I don't want to sound and play like a guitar player, playing a bass. Both instruments are a different kind of sports. Hope this all makes sense to you. The only thing that helped me with my guitar playing , that with a blues run on the lower strings, I had to use a different fingering to play it more smoothly and easier, but other than that it doesn't really help in the sense you've pointed it out. I think it also may give you a better sense of rhythym. Last but not least, the strings are much thicker on a bass opposed to a guitar. they are like thick cables on the Bridge in San Fransisco oppossed to needle thread in a needle. And it takes time to get used to that. my fingers did hurt the first couple of months. I finally get used to all of these differences.
wow! thanks for the detailed explanation! Much appreciated. It's fun to play but overall I definitely prefer playing guitar. It did make me appreciate bass players more, though.
@@salimalamistheone I still prefer guitar over bass sir, but bass is such fun to play and so soothing. And like you I did start to appreciate bass more
No, you didn't get ripped off, it was a pleasant upgrade. I love Bare Knuckle pickups. You got a killer deal..
Reverb didn't rip you off. The person who listed the guitar ripped you off. An important detail. And you're correct - paying under $2500 for a custom shop Strat is an excellent price. I'm surprised you didn't know what Bare Knuckle pickups are. They're excellent pickups. That said, your custom shop Strat is no longer original and that absolutely lowers its value. Over the years your fancy custom shop Strat will rise in value as it approaches "vintage status". Those "non-Fender" aftermarket pickups will absolutely lower its value. So he actually did rip you off.
I guess. I'm just happy I'm not a collector and just enjoy playing. Besides, there's something to be said about a guitar you can't resell since I have the habit of buying and selling Lol I hate it. I just want to keep a guitar long enough to get attached to it.
Bro for that money you can get a brand new one
custom shop? maybe if I got lucky. They look like they start at about 3K
The situation could have been worse; but this video could t have been
oh it could have. I almost used the camera that came installed on the laptop.
Bare Knuckles are on the Johnny Marr Fender Jaguar. I've only purchased from a large store that backs up their product. But I would prefer to buy a guitar in person since an instrument can feel and sound differently even from the same run.
Those pickups are shit
that's subjective.
Why would you ever buy a musical instrument without playing it first?
I like the risk.
Something must be lost in the receording because that sounds like crap especially for 2500 bucks.
Lol fair enough. I'm using a cheap amp. Or maybe I just need more practice ;)
@@salimalamistheone Order a new amp off Reverb. Nice prices.
If it sounds good, and as they’re from bare knuckle then you did well. That neck is lovely. I found that my CS had its neck replaced, still with an exact matching CS part from Fender but like you the seller had no idea.
Bare Knuckle Pickups are actually supposed to be really good pickups (I think maybe be better than CS). I built a 60's parts caster and LOVE IT! But I went with Monty's - they make amazing Jimi Hendrix inspired pickups
can't go wrong with that!
Got mine for 450 off eBay from PMT and mint condition well it’s got just a tiny floor in the mother in pearl on the machine head. That’s nothing it is a truly awesome guitar. It was a used guitar, but they’ve only been out a year. I already have a epyphone case that I bought For the cutaway hummingbird special edition and landing up putting that in another case and I got a Gibson hummingbird that was in it. When I got this one wow I thought this is too good to just hang on the wall so my Gibson hummingbird went into its original case which is a bit tatty. And this one has gone into the proper phone case that fits snug with some toasting guitars the size of the body would not fit which I was very happy about that but the problem lies. I can’t leave it alone so the case is getting well used to.😅
Sounds like my friend's Lag.
It's stunning alright, especially the price..
Not impressed
You know, having a battery in your acoustic is just not what I think I can put up with.
Where s it made?
Indonesia, not China. The 12str Hummingbird are made in Epi's custom shop (the old Samick factory) Different (old) tooling, from the the new Chinese factory
I just got one today and im SO impressed with its sound. Just amazing and I ended up paying 450 dollars for it because I traded it for a es335 that I bought used for that price :)
Thank you! Like yourself, I cannot believe the incredible beauty and value for the price! It is a treasure to keep. The color is like a sunset itself! James
Yes!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤
Cmon $900 and the battery pack is rolling around inside. Such a simple thing, makes you wonder what other shortcuts they took.
Played one last week in a music store , never played a 12 string before but it sounded spectacular 🎼👍
Is it head heavy like the Gibson?
slightly less
Is it the “Pro” $500 or the “Inspired By Gibson” $900??
That is a fine box indeed. I suppose it's the Inspired By Gibson version.
Just got mine last week from sweetwater. It is everything you described and more! The sound is in gibsons play ground. BTW, it's a bone nut and bone saddle. I also got the epi edread case, it's plush and remarkable! Only one thing is the bridge pins, they were jammed in on quite a few. I changed em out for the tusq presentation style bridge pins ( traditional style too big) with ernie ball 2153 and wow the sound is like a grand piano! Enjoy man and thanks for the inspiring review!
congrats! I'm glad you liked the review! thanks for commenting.
❤
Wow, it does sound great. lol.
Now, if you can get it in tune, you are on your way
Just ordered the J200 12 string. Jumbo with all maple thick stable neck.
I have the 6 string version of this Inspired by Gibson Hummingbird (gave up on 12 strings after breaking a bone in my hand), and it’s awesome. John Denver played a lot of songs on 12 strings (Rocky Mountain High and I think Annie’s Song, probably many more), if you’re looking for more songs to play on it. Enjoy, it’s a beautiful and beautiful sounding instrument.
Seven months in! do you still feel the same ?
Is yours from the "Inspired By Gibson" range or from the lower tier of the Epiphone line? I have the inspired by one and absolutely love it.
yes! Inspired by Gibson. They are much higher quality. I used to own a normal Epi line Hummingbird but it felt like playing cardboard
As you were strumming, you hit a chord that brought this song from 1963 back to mind. It was recorded with two 12 string guitars. WALK RIGHT IN, by the Rooftop Singers. I don't know what kind of music you play, but listen to this tune. 1963 was an eclectic year at the top of the charts, with #1 hits coming from crooners ("Blue Velvet"), girl groups ("He's So Fine"), an underage superstar ("Fingertips (Part 2)") and even an import from Japan ("Sukiyaki"). There was even room for folk music, as the Rooftop Singers hit the top spot with their adaptation of this Jug Band classic originally recorded by The Jug Stompers in 1929. The song was written by two members of The Jug Stompers who used to perform at medicine shows: Gus Cannon (banjo, jug) and Hosie Woods (guitar, kazoo). When the Rooftop Singers turned it into a feisty singalong, Cannon and Woods got huge windfalls. Cannon, who once hocked his banjo for $20 worth of coal, not only got royalties for the hit, he also got a recording contract with Stax Records. The Rooftop Singers were Erik Darling, Bill Svanoe and Lynne Taylor. Darling, formerly of the Tarriers ("Cindy Oh Cindy," "The Banana Boat Song (Day-O)") and the Weavers (he replaced Pete Seeger), put the trio together specifically to record this song. Darling modified some of the original lyrics; "Two way woman" became "new way of walking," for example, and the group recorded it using two 12-string guitars. Follow-up songs "Tom Cat" and "Mama Don't Allow" barely made the charts, but this group that was put together to record one song stayed together more than four years. This being the '60s, many listeners spotted a marijuana reference in the lyrics, "Everybody's talkin' 'bout a new way of walking... do you wanna lose your mind?" It's doubtful that the writers of the song had that intention - especially in 1929.

love this! thank you
Sounds really nice.
Wow, nice Mix and well played ! Please can you tell me wich Kind of strings you use??
hi! not sure, these are the ones that came with the guitar. But I think any good twelve string pack from Amazon will work just fine :)
Just bought one and I can't put it down. Such a spectacular instrument for the price. Best thing I've ever owned
Purchased one yesterday and cannot wait to try it out. I have a rather beat up old Gibson B-45 12 string and I want to see how close they sound with that "Gibson Sound". Your overall presentation with all your varieties in playing helped me a lot in buying this 12 string Epiphone. Thank you very much.
I'm glad it was helpful! that's great to hear
I’m interested in buying the Gibson 12 string the beat 45 or this Epiphone is there a huge difference? Or the Epiphone sounds close enough, and I could save some money.👍😁 Thanks.
Incredible sound, and it looks gorgeous. I shouldn't have watched this because now I want one even more.
I agree totally! Got mine in June from American Musical Supply. Had to do a review for the first time on an item I purchased. Have had Guild, and Rickenbacker 12 string guitars. This is every bit as good. Epiphone is making very high quality acoustics in their inspired by Gibson range, and Masterbuilt lines. I will be going back for another. There should be a sticky on one side, velcro on the other piece to hold that battery back in place. Enjoy.
thanks for the heads up! maybe it went loose. I haven't changed the strings yet, so haven't really inspected the interior.
Bought this guitar earlier this year as in 2011 I lost the opportunity to buy the Gibson version. It's heavily built and neck heavybut after six montgs of heavy strumming it started to open up...still not as good as my my Guild F512 but the thinner neck makes it much easier to play.
Solid top guitars and the necks all need humidification to remain stable as well
yeah, probably a good idea! I just get lazy for cheaper guitars. But yeah the top can be affected as it can morph and bend.
