Return to Hammerland: THE LOST CONTINENT (1968)
Talk about a long, strange trip! On this month's leg of their Return to Hammerland, Ian and AC take a waterlogged detour through THE LOST CONTINENT.
Co-directors Michael Carreras and Leslie Norman's tale of a doomed vessel transporting disreputable passengers (and dangerous chemicals!) promises intrigue, monsters, and mayhem. But there's hardly any of the last two--and the intrigue isn't especially intriguing.
In this spoilerific review, the guys talk about unreliable memories; the bizarro monsters-and-cults material that they literally couldn't get enough of; and how subsequent viewings might actually sway their opinions!
Plus: Get ready for more FRIDAY THE 13TH references than you can shak...

In this surprise-studded episode, the guys look at the universally maligned ROCKY V and the Director's Cut of the beloved legacy sequel, ROCKY BALBOA! At Kicking the Seat, we don't believe in curses but this 0-for-3 streak of movie reviews between Ian and David has us asking, "Why not?" Neil Marshall's latest film, DUCHESS, is now available On Demand and playing in UK theaters, and the guys are absolutely flabbergasted that the writer/director of new-century genre staples DOG SOLDIERS and THE DESCENT would even be capable of unleashing such a...

Worlds collide as Accademia Giallo meets Earth's Mightiest Critics for a knock-down, drag-out review of...the ROCKY movies? Yes, on the heels of last week's look at the first two films, Ian and Don are joined by Bryan Martinez for a right-hook retrospective of ROCKY III and the "Ultimate Director's Cut" of ROCKY IV. Revisiting this, again. I'm somewhat reminded of another discussion. Intolerance! M.R. is a movie about intolerance towards crime, criminals and human fallibility. Some things that are always contemporary. Contemporary contempt. Huh. Another rambling: After looking at M.R., I wonder how a Judge Dredd movie by Spielberg would look like. Or S. Craig Zahler instead! Vince Vaughn could play Dredd. He is a robust guy. But I've only watched parts of M.R to be honest. I should watch it completely.

The fact is White wants to be considered one of the greatest film critics of all time, along with Pauline Kael and Andrew Sarris. But he is not in league with them because, in their day, film critics were of higher importance than they are nowadays. He can be very thought provoking when he is not busy trying to settle some scores, like with why the world ( and the Internet ) doesn't recognize his self importance.

No question about their influence on film making, but, it's their messages and imagery that is what's most troubling. And truth be told, far better movies have been made since these were made more than a hundred years ago.

Really don't want to live through another pandemic but...at least we might get a cleaned up version of that Rocky V work edit! In all seriousness, I love the fact that Stalone revisited IV and spoke pretty candidly about his regrets and how he's grown as a filmmaker. There are plenty of other movies which could receive the same treatment.

Controversial it may be... but I know the reason why his recent work hasnt been his best. It's his partner. Since he has been engaged to Charlotte Kirk he has co-written nearly every film with her and he has put her in the lead role every time. The problem is, she cannot act or write to save her life and he clearly refuses to accept that (or she is pushing him to do this). I honestly think if he dropped his constant promotion of her, wrote a film himself and kept her far, far away from it, it would probably be amazing.

When I was 13 back in 1965, my father had some comedy albums like Redd Foxx, Moms Mabley and Godfrey Cambridge. So, I got a sense of where Mr. Cambridge humor was coming from. No foul language was used in any of these albums. Society was white and black. One can understand why Cambridge would play such a part knowing his past. 1971 was the beginning of the blacksploitation movies e.g., Superfly, Shaft and Sweet Sweetback showing blacks in other that subservient roles. We all knew that this was the beginning. There was some obvious undertones played out in the movie that most black people would immediately pick up on. The skin color thing was loud & clear but the cultural impacts was left up to the audience to interpret.

This was a fantastic conversation! I found I agreed and disagreed with all of you at some point or the other. For my money, the first film is the only one that is a real film. As enjoyable as Rocky II is, I don't think it has nearly the amount of authenticity and nuance. It feels like a movie made to provide the wish fulfillment for the audiences that wanted him to win in the first place. I hate that Stallone disregards the whole eye/southpaw issue from II when we get into RIII and moving forward. I think RIII is absolutely sliding into the cartoon era, and RIV is that cartoon fully realized. While I agree with Ian in that RIV is not a good movie from a narrative and character standpoint, I can also appreciate it for the cartoon that it is. I can totally see how it is somebody's favorite in the series without it being the "best." For my money, it's easily the most rewatchable of the bunch because it is that perfect distillation of the series. Kind of like how Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter is the best of those films, because it puts all the elements together. (That said, I think there is an argument to be made that F13FC is also the "best" of those films, while RIV is not.)

If these washed up losers who've seemingly lost everything can still fight and die for something, then so can he. X-23 could've had more than one dialogue scene to flesh her out as a foil, though.

25:15 Besides the obvious exhibitionism, it's provocation. He is a sex addict and wants other people to join him in "debauchery". A sex dirtbag. I was listening to a podcast of "reactionary" commentators from England and they were discussing the painter Francis Bacon. He was of the post-WW2 generation and , going from the commentary from the podcast, had a knack for serving a little extra alcohol to his guests. Guess to make them lose their inhibitions. Louis likely is on the same ballpark. Sex addict that is always chasing the latest high. He thought that now that he had made it to the "Big City", away from the prudes and now he can jerk off, drink alcohol and call hookers anytime he wanted to. As a comic he had a life on the road, spending hours driving and living in hotel rooms likely watching hours and hours of the porn channels. Giving birth to the anomie. I can think of another comic that could get in trouble anytime. But his fetish is ... special and few would thread there.

Good point about showing how other regions, etc reacted to the invasion. Day one was over all too quickly, so it's not really Day one, is it? I understand that we're living through our heroine's eyes. But her being knocked out, albeit plausible that such a thing should happen, was a creative cheat.

What a disappointment this review is. So much wrong with it. Firstly, before you pontificate, check your history. Vampires were always content in light until the 20th century when the film Nosferatu was released. It is a modern myth. Secondly check the pronunciation of the name of the main actress before recording it wrongly & disrespectfully . .And how can you pompously state a view when you admit you were distracted throughout, even possibly missing the final half hour. I would like to point out the stunning cinematography, shown up beautifully in the more recent release of the BluRay , the superb British actors universally employed,( there are actually no poor performances) & the light hearted & fun feel to the whole movie; if you like, a Disneyfied take on The Karnstein story. A shameful review in my opinion.

Very glad I happened upon your discussion on this film! My favorite film (along with 2049) I saw the film when I was 15, blew my mind! Loved it! Was my fist dvd purchase and then my first blu-ray! So it's my opinion that Deckard is human! The original book he's human, the two screenplays he's human, and despite the ambiguous and more overt comments by Scott...the story works so much better with him as a human. So in my Bladerunner world he's human! Works for me and I'm sticking with it lol Thanks for the discussion!!! - The animals were extinct (or extremely rare) and illustrate the loss due to ecological collapse. - The photos are from Rachael's (used by Tyrell to reinforce their implanted memories) They're not Deckard's pictures. And he's drinking and musing...which could naturally lead to his "dream sequence) btw - Might be of interest: "In the documentary Dangerous Days: Making Blade Runner, Hauer, director Ridley Scott, and screenwriter David Peoples confirm that Hauer significantly modified the speech. In his autobiography, Hauer said he merely cut the original scripted speech by several lines, adding only, "All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain". One earlier version in Peoples' draft screenplays was: I've known adventures, seen places you people will never see, I've been Offworld and back… frontiers! I've stood on the back deck of a blinker bound for the Plutition Camps with sweat in my eyes watching stars fight on the shoulder of Orion... I've felt wind in my hair, riding test boats off the black galaxies and seen an attack fleet burn like a match and disappear. I've seen it, felt it...![ And, the original script, before Hauer's rewrite, was: I've seen things... seen things you little people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion bright as magnesium... I rode on the back decks of a blinker and watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments... they'll be gone. Hauer described this as "opera talk" and "hi-tech speech" with no bearing on the rest of the film, so he "put a knife in it" the night before filming, without Scott's knowledge. After filming the scene with Hauer's version, crew-members applauded, with some even in tears. In an interview with Dan Jolin, Hauer said that these final lines showed that Batty wanted to "make his mark on existence ... the replicant in the final scene, by dying, shows Deckard what a real man is made of"." - wikipedia Again (imo) pointing to Deckard being human. Also in 2049 he has aged. It's very apparent 😉

This story screams remake The novel by Matheson is a classic. The important P.G. rating or G.P. rating to get the kids in kind of toned down the scares stated in the novel. As it stands the film in okay. Specially in set, photography, acting, directing dept. Loads of atmosphere. The climax with R.M. screaming in the wind did nothing for me, kind of a anticlimactic choice. However it was interesting seeing good old Michael Gough as Balasko's corpse.

I had to turn this off halfway through because I just got sick of Jeff being all holier-than-thou and talking over Cati the whole time. This video draws an interesting parallel to the movie it discusses in that we spend entirely too much time on one man's point of view and are given very little payoff for it.
