Drip irrigation was invented for agriculture and works perfect for edible gardens. Drip kills native plants within a couple years and fails to hydrate the entire soil area (which is critically important). Drip trains the plant to root shallow. Drip is not natural at all. Drip is expensive and vulnerable to constant maintenance/repair due to critter damage. Finally, when (or if) the new garden makes it to establishment, native plants mostly need no frequent watering at all, so the drip system is now not needed. What a wasted expense and lots of fussing. Give me a hose and a decent rain wand and now I am engaged in establishing my garden. This is a "tough love" comment. I truly hope we can all get to more reliable information to support native gardens. There is no more time to waste in this biodiversity/climate crisis.💚

fascinating. would be amazing if local nurseries could move to the practices explained by Diana Benner. (especially the big wholesale nurseries that supply for landscapers) Maybe they're not there now, but they are moving in that direction by a date. Especially lifting the container plants out of the drainage splash zone.

The San Fernando Valley species of native walnut is Juglans californica and is used for a rootstock for commercial English Walnuts that you buy in the market. I recall hearing that the San Fernando Valley has its own special subspecies. As per wikipedia, the Jepson Manual considers the walnut native to Southern California, Juglans californica that grows in the transverse range, the Santa Monica Mountains and Los Angeles area valleys) to be separate species from the walnut that grows in North-Central and Northern California, Juglans hindsii. The California Native Plant Society considers them to be the same species, genetics suggests they are closely related species. I am not a formally trained botanist, but I'm familiar with both, and find them to be easily distinguishable at first glance and that their nuts alone also have easily identifiable differences.

Willows have an incredible root system. In a suburban setting they will find your sewer line and plug it. Unless like me you are in an odd and rare geological setting. My house at 50 meters above sea level is just 2 meters above an Ice Age marine beach. It is a water filled sedimentary layer with several natural springs along the street. I have taken advantage to plant an Arroyo Willow, Salix lasiolepis. It tapped the spring, and not the sewer. The tree is fine, but the added fun are Morning Cloak butterfly caterpillars.
