1662 | A Drive Around The Yard
1985 MAN SL200 | RD5280
Recorded April 2024 | Auckland, New Zealand
After sitting for a fair few months, 1662 was kicked back into life with some healthy batteries and given a spin around the yard. There has been much work done to this bus since the video, such as preliminary painting of the front, as well as having the whole fleet cleaned.

The depot was built for the Auckland Regional Authority (ARA) in the late 1980s, all but a memory now :( The depot remains on site just in a smaller capacity, it too will eventually go as the land is worth too much to house a humble bus depot for much longer. www.araheritagebus.org.nz/

Ah yes, the low air buzzer, I remember it well (from being started at a failed first visit to Bayes if I recall correctly). Pretty sure most of us stayed off the bus till the air built up and the buzzer shut up! Oh the good old days... 🤣
Hey Daniel, haha yes sometimes took a while to build up, it is quite loud but a good deterrent not to drive away before the air is near the 8 bar mark. Good days, fond memories for sure ;) JP
I wander if that ticket machine based is still live
No idea but we do have access to the wayfarer style machine which this stand was made for 👍

SL200 is my biggessssssssst love !!
I'm 20 years of age and still remember these busses at the otahuhu depot. these busses were my favorite i always imagined myself driving these but I'm still driving a car I miss em
Hi David, thanks for the comment apologies regards to the reply wait. Nice to hear that, this one is a bit weathered here and there but goes very well! It's former fleet number while a Stagecoach bus was #503. All the best with getting your heavy class licenses to drive :) JP
My shop is above Maidstone motors
Oh nice, had my car fixed there many years ago know the place 👍😉
Miss all these ARA buses I remember my first ride on the ARA busing home after school during that time I loved the bendy and the MAN Six axles beauty love em all
Hi Neil sorry these comments were missed, very cool and thanks for sharing your memories. I too enjoyed the bendies on school trips when they were not very old and some brand new. Cheers :) JP
Send some more videos please love it
Yes we have had a period of no activity, this year will put more effort in 👍😉

Hi Sarah, again sorry for delay here.. no it sadly is still sitting in storage while we sort things out, I can say it will be some time away in the future :) JP
Anyone have a photo of it when it was in North star colour ?
Sorry this comment was missed, oh that was a photo edit by Miro that appeared on Facebook in a post. Cheers :) JP
Wouldnt mind filming on thos 1 day.
When we get it out on tour work hopefully in summer :)
@@araheritagebuses do you guys do the shore. All tho im from Nelson.
@@ENGLISH-u4w Hi we have done a few trips on the shore but nothing in ways of public yet, we aim to this summer :) JP
Nice. It's a bit quiet though.
Hi, thanks yes the window wind noise did not help either :) JP
I remember Derek building that tow truck at the Central Workshops when I worked there and I later drove the truck myself recovering buses after I transferred to City depot. Cool times!
Hi David, it's nice to hear some history about it... Paul drove it a bit and Lyle the odd time during its time at City. Had a whirl in it myself, despite work needed it's a sold piece that is a bit of fun, sounds great too! :) JP
@@araheritagebuses Yeah Paul certainly drove it way more than I got to.
@@cadifan He enjoyed driving it again, and said it was just like old days! :) JP
Are. You. Going. To. Keep it original. Re. The. Seats. That. It. Had. When. Atb. Or. Ra seats.
Sorry Sarah, these comments were missed and no one has been monitoring the page much of late. It would be the plan to keep it original but we will have to see what success we have with things, lately it has been an up and down period. The seats would be hard to find or very expensive to reproduce :) JP
It will be nice to see this restore hopefully I can check this buses one day in Auckland
Hi Tristan, sorry for delay.. yes one day somewhere in the future no doubt :) JP
I hope a high and low floor NDNZ scorpions will join I think Uzabus has one or 2 for sale late this year i thunk
I think we are looking at a few options, even though they were not favourites of mine they are a bit of history and well worth keeping one :) JP
Is this bus still under Waiheke Bus Company ownership? I would love to see a video on the progress you've guys have done. Also I've made a video dedicated to you guys on how amazing you restore buses into its original livery! Great Job!
Hi, no it is now under our name. Miro is making videos as he cleans parts of the bus, hoping he will upload here and share. Oh I just had a look, thanks very much.. sorry been very busy hard to get time to myself lately. We hope to get 1662 done next! Cheers :)
Love it!!! :)
Cheers John :) JP
My dad use to drive buses out from Wiri from the 70s till early 90s. Alot of Memories from there growing up. Use to be the service pumps as well as the bus wash as soon as your entered on site.
Hi Anthony, sorry for missing your comment.. this page has not been the most active. Very cool, no doubt he would know some of the guys in our group and friends of theirs. I recall both those parts of the depot, as when I first started with NZBus Wiri was still a very much functioning depot right up to 2018 I believe. Thanks for sharing your memories :) JP
Was that James peter the other person talking
Hi Tristan, sorry this comment was missed... yes that was indeed me :) JP
Aah, the sound of the SL200... I love it.. Now all thats missing is the smell of those old Clip tickets (Pre Electronic Ticketing)
Yes there is even a smell the bus has that takes me right back not quite as distinct but it is there! :) JP (sorry missed your comment)
Indeed, the sounds of this machinery take me right back to 1980s Auckland! The SL200 seemed so futuristic! Have you been able to make any stereo audio recordings in the interior?
Hi Matthew, sure do for me too... just a pleasant welcoming sound that really takes you right back to those great years! I felt the same too, the tinted glass, the styling and just overall the way they looked and sounded. As a kid I thought they ran on Nuclear power haha, such awesome sounds particularly if still running the original Renk gear box, sadly 1662 has a 4 speed ZF.. one day we will refit it with a Renk :) Not yet, was trying to obtain a good sound recorder as both camera and phone pick up other sounds an are not high quality. Will get something done in time an post here :) JP
@@araheritagebuses Ah interesting! So, to my uneducated ear, 1662 here sounds a bit like Auckland's MAN 12.223 buses from the 1990s - is that because of the ZF transmission? And so does the Renk transmission have more of those "musical" tones to it? Was 1662 originally fitted with a Renk?
@@matthew414347 Hi, yes that is about right.. maybe not quite but a similarity and yes likely down to the ZF. Yes the Renk has the as I say more harmonic sounds/tones.. a noise I really love after hearing it in full swing with 1610 when test drove at time of purchasing 1662. 1662 was just less work and in better order :) JP
Yes that park brake will soon be gone, an original one will work much better :)
