    I think the commentators make a valid point about Monica's fitness. It helped to keep her rivalry with Steffi pretty even (4-6 up until the Australian in 93) but 1-4 after 93 tells me fitness may have been a factor.

    Graf never played either of the Williams sisters at her peak. Last couple of years she battled injuries and in this match she wasn’t far off from retirement. Clearly, if she had played all the Australian opens she missed, and if she had played another 10 years like Serena she would hands down be the best of all time. I still consider Graf the GOAT!

    Prior to this tournament, the two Spaniards (Martinez and Sanchez Vicario) acted like they were No. 1 & 2 in the world, only for Graf to waltz right back in and reminded them who the boss is.

    Graf in this match, the French 99 and Venus Wimbledon 99 were glimpses of the brilliance of this wonderful champion who gave to much to tennis over a prolonged period the injuries leading up to the treatment required in 1997 took its toll but these matches in the next 2 seasons outlined and showcased her brilliance as Davenport by this time was also superb

    Chrissie’s strings are too loose, I can hear that thud when she contacts the ball. Tiger strings Chrissie would’ve had more control on Grafs power. Often Chris’s reaction shots to Grafs power, Chris loses control of the ball.. typically for clay the tension is lowered for power , faster court the strings need to be a few pounds tighter to control fast balls.

    Chris lost first set with 3 backhand errors at 3-4. Chris checked out and then played we to build a. Dad in second set then just didn’t want a third set to be played. The thought of grinding it out just didn’t want to be there it’s the first pang of retirement entering her mind . Suddenly her view of her marriage all centered n tennis became unappealing to her her French win coming up cemented her legendary status

    It's amazing after reviewing these comments on how biased people are in Steffi's favor. It really proves how "white" america really hates a successful black person. I said what i said and will not be responding to anyone. Graf may have one a match or two against Serena, but she retores at 29 because she knew the tide was changing and that she wouldn't be able to keep up with pace and power consistently.

    • @carrerau7138
      @carrerau7138 2 месяца назад

      You seem to be one of those new black racists. Steffi retired because she didn't have "anything left to prove". But let's hear what Serena's compatriots Capriati and Davenport had to say about Steffi. They played many matches against her and later also against Serena. "If she would have been playing now, not retired quite yet, this would be her time." (Jennifer Capriati on Steffi Graf, Paris, May 2002) “She was the greatest champion I ever played against. …. What if she had kept playing? She would have won a lot more slams titles in my opinion.“ (Lindsay Davenport, Tennis Channel, March 2020) But both are white, maybe just racists who favor the blond goddess from Germany....?

      Serena? The player with a mediocre career match winning percentage of only 84.6 % (Steffi has 89.3 %)? The player who folded like a cheap tent against R. Vinci on the threshold of a Grand Slam (Steffi won the Golden Slam)? The player who let clowns like Sharapova, Azarenka, Wozniacki, Kerber, Safina, Jankovic, Ivanovic to get to #1 (Steffi only Seles, Sanchez, Hingis, Davenport)? The player who lost in slams to giants like Testud, Likhovtseva, Craybas, Srebotnik, Makarova, Razzano, Lisicki, Cornet, Vinci in slams even before her pregnancy? Are you stoned, boy?

    A lot was made of this result, and probably the wrong conclusions were drawn. People were saying that this was the first really tight match that Steffi had won in ages (after losing several to Sabatini, and Novotna) and that it must be a sign that Steffi was getting back to her best. What was missed is the huge improvements that Arantxa had made and what that meant for the future. Steffi had absolutely obliterated Arantxa in their most recent matches (their last one was 6-1, 6-1 in Leipzig at the end of 1990, then 6-1, 6-2 at the US Open before that). In fact, in the 6 matches after their 1989 french open final, Arantxa had only won one set and a grand total of 23 games. This match was a sign that their rivalry was getting tighter and it would be much more competitive in future.
