Everyone needs to see this video! Life changing and i havent even seen the movies!

Great insight for someone like me who's the opposite of a workaholic lol "Meet John Doe" from 1941 offers an interesting early version of this type of character. Barbara Stanwyck plays a reporter who is told to write one last column before being fired. She makes up a "suicide letter" from a man protesting the state of the world. This letter has such an impact that they hire some rando to play the author but the words and directions come from Stanwyck. They inadvertently create a whole political movement. The film emphasizes the role of the reporter as the primary author behind the character and his philosophy. She's empathetic, quick-witted but also willing to mislead the public to spread her agenda (wholeheartedly positive in the eyes of the film) and boost newspaper sales. As a woman her breakthrough only happens when she channels her thoughts through a man. She's by far the most interesting character in the film. Spoilers for the ending: By the end she basically loses all agency and becomes the love-interest for her own creation. He gets to make the hard decisions and fight the central conflict. She actually falls unconscious in the last scene ffs. Very disappointing ending for the character. Still worth watching for the first two thirds.
