Thirty-five years ago my sell-esteem remained low. This was two years after I had come through a particularly bad time in my life. My self-talk still contained fear plus an unyielding feeling of worthlessness. I didn’t know how to shake it until… One evening a friend made a simple suggestion as to how I could feel MUCH better about myself and my life. He said, "Write a gratitude list and keep it going." So I took his advice to heart, and doing so completely changed my life! Today my list holds every large and little gratitude I have noticed in my life. To add to it I even thought back through the times of my childhood, teen, college, and young adult years. "A stranger smiled at me today, and she wasn't laughing at me." "I was able to help a friend this morning." “Someone helped me this afternoon." “I’m clean and sober.” My business is turning around.” I acquired a new________. “What I think about expands in my life.” Today my list is single-spaced typed in MS Word with one new gratitude on each line. It's 57,350+ words and 145 pages in length. It’s the length of a book. By keeping focus on the things for which I am grateful, more goodness comes into my life about which I can have gratitude. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy. And because of this practice, I feel wonderful about "me" and my life today. This gratitude list completely changed my self-image, which changed my belief in myself. :-Don at ideapage dot com
