    Devil’s Advocate here: Maybe someone would choose the big name insurance company over Lemonade with the mentality that “they’ve been around forever, so they will be around forever.” Its a scary thought for some that your “new” insurance company could disappear as fast as it came, and take your insurance with it. Love your video!

    I am very bullish on LMND. I personally think you understated their growth. If they took over as the top US insurer, yes that would be a 10x. However, like you said, they are able to expand into new markets very quickly, futher expanding their TAM. I personally believe they will have a nice slice of the overall market because they will delight customers. I see 200-300B market cap in their future. Great video BTW!

    Good video! I think most people severely underestimate the difference between a new company that is built from the foundation up with a clear, singular vision in mind (and a hyper efficient, continually improving digital framework behind it), and legacy companies that are dealing with an unclear goal, opposing and inefficient structures and departments, apathetic employees, leaders that are there to fill their time and are self serving in their own personal goals. The difference over time in terms of value creation is staggering. Love that you touched on this. The biggest question I have for LMND that I'm digging into is their data advantage. If they truly have a data advantage that can grow as they grow, then the skies the limit for this company. Why stop at a $70B valuation like you mentioned? Insurance is a multi trillion dollar industry and an industry that will continue to grow as the world's wealth and population continues to grow. Honestly, if they move fast (which they are) and if they have a data advantage that continues to expand as they expand ... I could see them being a Trillion dollar plus company. Would represent an over 100x gain from now. If their data advantage isn't all that it's cracked up to be. Or, if other big data/AI companies like Google or Facebook could make insurance companies that use data to their advantage, then they could just be an overpriced insurance company. Overall though, I'm thinking the more bullish view that they could have a data advantage and be huge over time is winning in my mind right now. :)

    • @angelohunter5329
      @angelohunter5329 3 года назад

      So true. great point about growth. I completely agree they have the potential to grow well past 70bil! It's interesting that even just becoming the biggest in the US they are almost 8x... with the potential to become the biggest in the world by a huge margin. I was thinking about if some large data collectors like goog or FB got involved in insurance, and how that would look. I wonder if a company that isn't solely focused on providing the consumer with the best possible experience (as lmnd is) can compete over the long term? If FB or goog don't pair their AI with a great experience will they still outcompete lmnd? thanks for the comment :)

    My price By average share price is 89$ (bought from the 50s to `100s) (55% of my total portfolio) I bought at a 4.8billion dollar market cap: outstanding shares x share price - 54millionx89$ = 4.8BIL My Bull Case Rational Today Lemonade's market cap it is 8.61BIL Top 10 American pure insurance companies - disfold.com/top-us-insurance-companies/ 1) Chubb Limited ($CB) (72.6b) 2) Marsh & Mclennan ($MMC) (58.7b) 3) Aon ($AON) (53.7b) 4) Progressive ($PGR) (48.6b) 5) Metlife ($MET) (47.2b) 6) AIG ($AIG) (46.5b) 7) All state ($ALL) (39.6b) 8) Aflack (ALF) (38.4b) 9) Prudential Financial (PLU) (37.7b) 10) Travels (TVR) (34.7b) Insurance is huge. If lemonade gets to position 10 that is 4x The biggest insurance company in America then that is 10x. Can Lemonade become the biggest American insurance company? Seems likely... The evidence: - Currently, they have 40% of the European population covered, and most of the US states. Launching in new countries and products (France, life insurance) - they are very rapidly... - fastest insurance company to 1 million users by 4-5x. - it took them 4.25 years to get to 1 million customers compared to the 19-22 years of second place. - Will they continue to grow? Well, if they keep launching in new countries and keep expanding their product... they will grow. - Their technology stack allows Lemonade to launch new products instantly around the world. They do not have geographical confines. - They are expanding internationally rapidly. Why should that expansion slow? There is a reason for their rapid growth 2) Lemonade It just a better insurance product. - They don't make profit denying my claims... - take a flat fee and use the rest for claims, give to charity when they don't use all the claims. - Lemonade's flat-fee model takes away their incentive to avoid paying me out. If I am an honest person and am not attempting insurance fraud, the chance of them paying me out as fast as they can is very high. It's in their best interest to treat me as well as they possibly can. Lemonade's mission is to delight its customers. - why would I use a company that doesn't want to pay my claims when I can use lemonade? - Also... I tell myself I'm a good person if I use lemonade. Lemonade gives back excess premiums to the charity of my choice at the end of the year. By buying insurance... I'm actually doing something positive for society in an indirect way. If prices are equal... that is better. - Pricing is actually cheaper. - I can feel good about buying my insurance. So, I buy more insurance with them. Why not? Insurance is useful. - I will tell my friends about it... when I actually feel good I will share that. 3) Lemonade is staggeringly more efficient than incumbents. They have fundamental advantages. - Why are Incumbents are notoriously slow? Many reasons... 1) Fundamentally, they want to find something so they don't have to pay you... 2) they are handcuffed by many separate departments that do not have perfectly streamlined communication between people, 3) they use older technology and their whole system is designed for a slower world. 4) Does working for an old school insurance company provoke innovation, hard work, passion for solving the organization's problems, etc? Do the people who work for the incumbent insurance companies really love pleasing their customers? It certainly is not in their organization's DNA... - probably more... Lemonade is different - their whole goal is to delight the customer. - Claims can be paid out in seconds (33% of claims are paid instantly, the rest are moved forward by an AI before reaching a human - So much faster) - This is because the whole lemonade business is streamlined. Everything about a customer's acquisition, policies bought, and claims made are incorporated in one backend display. This means that lemonade gets a view of their customer, and helps understand the situation as a whole. Incumbents are primarily focused on policy number... this is a very different approach to data collection. - They collect way more data, and organize it in efficient way. That is their mission. - This gives them an advantage at predicting risk. (this is reflected in their ever-decreasing loss ratio which is now better than the industry average). - Seems to be working, some extra data is probably not useful, some probably are. - if they are able to make better predictions than other companies and provide a better product... that is the advantage, and that seems to be playing out. - this type of data collection helps avoid fraud. Counterintuitively, it seems easier to trick old school insurance companies. - efficient business means higher margins. Higher margins mean lower prices for customers, this fuels growth - growth means more data and more long-term profit for lemonade "They call this the flywheel" - better product - growth - more efficient - better predictions - long term growth/better predictions - this is a hard strategy to compete with from behind - Management is bringing the tech heat to the insurance game. The tech heat is hard to handle... we all know this. - Seems like a pretty easy bet. Anything can happen with a company... but they are certainly on the right track My RISK REWARD THINKING why put over 50% into lemonade? why only put 50% I am risky - but I am not an all-in type of guy. I feel very comfortable with 50% of my money being in my favorite stock, and the other 50% is spread out across 8-10 others. slightly lower risk and I like other companies. They have huge potential (10x+) Their upside is huge, and the risk is not that high. It is not sure thing, but it is unlikely they will go bankrupt or completely fail. Insurance is a business that will always have customers. - despite macro market conditions, people will continue to buy insurance. - The total market is huge. Their customer base will continue buying policies from them for the rest of their lives potentially 3) Massive lead in the insurance technology space. - it is pretty obvious that lemonade is the leader in insurance technology - lemonade has the most "mind share" - no other insurance technology is being mentioned among the big players like state farm and all-state - they are by far the best at contemporary marketing and are very active on social media

    Ep. 1: How to get started in stocks 1) What are your beliefs about money and the stock market? - What is money? Where does it come from? - What is the point of money? - What are you hoping to achieve by participating in the stock market? Why the stock market over other forms of investing right now? - What are your assumptions about the stock market and are they right? Examples: - Can someone make money consistently in the markets or is it always a gamble? - Do you really believe you can pick a company that can 10x+ in 5-10 years? - Do professionals really have an insurmountable advantage over retail investors? If so, why? What are the advantages of being a retail investor? - How much are you willing/can you afford to lose? Are you willing to "pay tuition in the markets" by losing money while you learn? 2) Learn about the structure of the stock market. - What function does the stock market provide in our society? What is the point of the system? - What advantages does participating in the stock market provide for your own financial situation? - What does it mean to own a stock? What are you entitled to as a shareholder? Do you really believe that owning a stock means you're now a business owner? What type of business' do you want to own? - What is a bond? What is the difference between equities and bonds? - What is an index? what are the S&P500, Nasdaq, and Dow Jones? How are they different? Why are they important? - What is an ETF? What are the pros and cons of investing in ETFs? Are you going to invest in ETFs, individual stocks, or a mixture? - how do you participate in the markets? What type of account are you going to use? Start the process of setting up a self-directed account. Figure out how much you can afford to contribute. (This can take some time) - What is leverage and Margin? 3) Leverage the intelligence of the internet. Find investing mentors. Figure out what investing philosophies resonate with you. - today's access to information allows exposure to many different investing philosophies. - often, investing philosophies are very different or blatantly contradictory. Contradictory investing philosophies can both work. - find mentors and learn as much as you can from them. Mentors do not need to be in person, they can come in any form. For example, youtube, podcasts, Twitter, books, blogs, live streams, etc. - figure out how you learn best, then immerse yourself in that content. ex: youtube trading live streams each morning for 2 hours. Or, 30 minutes of reading before work. etc. Do this consistently. Osmosis is a very effective form of learning - expose yourself to as many different investing philosophies as you can in the beginning and try to understand each kind. Think about the pros and cons of each investment philosophy. Eventually, you will find a philosophy you resonate with, and later you will develop a unique philosophy that you can then impose on the markets. You will constantly be making adjustments and changes 4) Learn how to do your own due diligence. ( very important) - everyone has their own method. - your mentors will likely point you towards stocks, this is a good way to learn. Make sure you form your own opinions around these stocks - research stocks for yourself and come to your own conclusions. If you exclusively copy someone else you will not have the proper convictions and this will lead to poor decision making. - You have to figure out how to do your own research. Here is my current method to get you started 1) find myself interested in stock because of a video, mentor, Twitter, etc. 2) Consider whether it fits my portfolio/am I interested in picking up a new position 3) If I am, go to the original source first. S1 filings, quarterly reports, hypercharts for their financials, etc. 4) when I have formed an opinion from primary sources, do a bull-bear review (5 bull cases, 5 bear cases) 5) analyze bull cases and bear cases - which is smarter? Often it is quite easy to tell. 6) initiate a position, slowly add over time. Buy Stocks like I can't change my mind for 10 years
