2024 Truckee Firecracker Mile
July 4th, 2024. Finally got myself to do the Truckee Firecracker Mile that runs ahead of the parade in downtown. The race sponsored by Tahoe Mountain Sports, benefits the ASC Training Center in support of junior/youth athletic programs. I have never run a mile race before and if I’ve ever run a mile time trial, it pre-dates Strava and probably in high school! But all in good fun with friends and a gravity assisted downhill mile! Here’s the result of me bringing the GoPro along with me.
TBH, I had no idea how this video would come out while trying to run a race this fast! Held the GoPro in my hand by itself. Even with GoPro stabilization, it's pretty rough as expected - needed my arms to pu...

Broken Arrow Skyrace Course Updated Preview - June 12, 2023

Update to last week's course recon video, we checked out the same opening few kilometers shared by the 11K/26K/46K before splitting off to follow and preview the forested section of the 26K/46K course where we found very runnable conditions. Lots of melt from the warm temps of the past week but also from the daily afternoon thunder showers. But still tons of snow! Thanks to Laura and Antoine fo...
Broken Arrow Skyrace Course Recon - June 3, 2023

Went out on Saturday morning to scout the Broken Arrow Skyrace course conditions from the base to what we think may be the 23K/46K routes up to the VK finish. A lot has melted in the 5 days since I skied Palisades Tahoe on closing day last Monday. But still a lot of snow! We’re still skiing on the Alpine Meadows side and if it weren’t for the scheduled cable maintenance on the Funi, we’d still ...

      Really? Mine is just a studio. But plenty of room! A bit noisy with thin walls and kids running around and party next door every night! 😂 Nice balcony and they have hot tubs by the river!

    Would something like Atlas snow shoes be overkill for the long uphill sections that are covered in snow? One section of the video (around the 1:07 mark) looks like a long climb and all snow. I'm wondering if on the second lap it will be so soft that with each step your foot sinks, even if wearing YakTrax.

    • @WooOutside
      @WooOutside Год назад

      I think it would be since despite the 3-5' of snow depth , it's quite consolidated so we won't be postholing all the way through. And I imagine it will pack down more with all the runners after the 1st lap.

      @WooOutside Год назад

      Hey San, I did not wear them on this day but did carry them in my pack. I definitely recommend them to anyone not used to running/hiking on snow. And same for poles. It can be a long or frustrating day out there if conditions call for a little traction assistance. You can always just stash them in your pack just in case.

    Thanks, @WooOutside! Great to see a preview. I see you were using poles. Did you have microspikes on your shoes for any of this run, too?

    • @kadenmaxwellstrom1107

      I’m running the 46k and would most definitely wear some sort of microspikes with that much snow coverage

    • @WooOutside
      @WooOutside Год назад

      Hi Michael, I actually did have microspikes in my pack although didn't use them as the traction on my shoes plus poles were good enough for me, and where the snow was soft i didn't feel the microspikes would help enough to be worth putting the on. That said, I'm very comfortable running on snow and ice and I had a lot of practice this winter in Tahoe!

      @@michaely9481 some of them are quick and easy to put on and take off. So as long as you have room in your pack, you can transition as needed.

    Thanks for the video! How imperative is it to use poles?

    • @DustinGrahamCA
      @DustinGrahamCA Год назад

      Not the video poster, but I went for a run like this a couple weeks ago. Poles would be nice, but not mandatory. I do recommend microspikes or yaktrex. And if you have neither, then poles can help. I think the yaktrex add more stability than the poles though, and they're lighter. It's a little more of a pain to have yaktrex for mixed snow and dirt/rock. Not so bad on pure/soft dirt, but a lot of rock and I might take them off for a bit.

    • @WooOutside
      @WooOutside Год назад

      Hey Brett, poles certainly will help with so much snow this year as they provide two extra points of contact to the surface. Even with microspikes, you will still slide back when the snow is wet and loose. That said, many may choose not to use poles and may do just fine. And some may wish they had a pair! It all depends on each individual but also the conditions come race day. The snow can be firm early in the morning but by mid morning could be very soft! Those doing 2 laps will want to consider these changing conditions.
