Sequel to 'Davy'. Bernie Parry.
Full title 'If Stories Were Made Of Gold'. In my original song 'Davy' I left him still travelling the world. In this song I've brought him home to the Irontown he left when he was young. Me on vocals and main guitar, Tony Taffinder on guitar, acoustic bass and harmony vocals.

Travellers' Tales. Bernie Parry

I composed this song as part of a childrens radio programme I wrote in 1981. Happily, it stands as a complete song by itself. It's on my album 'Harlequin Dances'. Accompanied here by Nicky Wright on keyboards, Paul Sax on violin and Rob Van Sante on vocal harmonies.
Mariner. Bernie Parry
Просмотров 30413 лет назад
Full title 'Should've Been A Mariner'. Inspired by a cousin of mine who wanted to be anything but a coalminer, but his father made him go down the Pit. Accompanied here by my old mate Tony Taffinder on clever guitar and vocal harmonies. For more info and CDs look at my website bernieparry.com.
Finagle's Dream (original). Bernie Parry

I wrote this song as a companion to an earlier composition 'The Harper'. In this song the harper is old and disillusioned. For more info and CDs look at my website bernieparry.com.
Afon Dulyn. Bernie Parry.
Просмотров 17513 лет назад
A tune I named for the stream that ran through my village in Snowdonia, Wales till it was dammed up in the mountains. it's just a trickle now. The river on the video is not the Afon Dulyn 'cos it's not there any more. It's pronounced 'Arvon Dylan'. Played here by me on Hurdy Gurdy and guitar. It's on my instrumental album 'Ther Are No Words'.
An Ordinary Day. Bernie Parry

My generation was born and lived for most of our lives in the shadow of the Atomic bomb. We didn't think about it too much but at the back of our minds we knew we could be only two or three minutes from Armageddon. I wrote this song in the early 1980s during the Cold War as an observation on how it may happen. It's not a happy song.
He's A Rough Diamond. Bernie Parry

I didn't mean to write this song, it just popped out while I was writing something else. Not my usual kind of song but I quite like it. It's on my double CD compilation 'Pitch And Toss'. The character though fictional is the kind of guy you'd like to have as a friend. For info and CDs go to bernieparry.com.
A Bend In The Road. Bernie Parry
Просмотров 17313 лет назад
The first song with lyrics I wrote on the Hurdy Gurdy. In this song I'm not the gypsy, I'm the landed man who meets the traveller on the road. Filmed at the Abbey, Belper, Derbyshire. For more info and CDs go to bernieparry.com
Mashes. Bernie Parry

'Parry Mash' and 'To Win Toulouse'. Two tunes written and performed by me on Hurdy Gurdy. The first tunes I ever wrote on the hurdy. Taken from my instrumental album 'There Are No Words'. For info and CDs go to my website bernieparry.com
Featherlegs. Bernie Parry.
Просмотров 7013 лет назад
My instrumental composition written by me and performed on two unison guitars. Guitar tuning open G. In Yorkshire UK to be 'featherlegged' is to be confused (my usual state of mind). Taken from my instrumental album 'There Are No Words'. For info and CDs go to my website bernie parry.com.

Two tunes both written by me. Given joke French titles because the hurdy gurdy is a French instrument. 'Parry Mash' 'To Win Toulouse'. The first tunes I wrote on the hurdy gurdy. I quite like the bare rawness of these. Both of these tunes are on my instrumental album 'There Are No Words'. Check out my albums and CDs at bernieparry.com.

My composition performed by me on two guitars playing in unison. In Yorkshire UK to be 'featherlegged' is to be confused.....that seems to be familiar, hence the title. Taken from my instrumental album 'There Are No Words'. Guitar tuning open G. For CDs and info look me up at bernieparry.com
The Itinerant Mendicant. Bernie Parry.
Просмотров 12913 лет назад
Composed by me and performed by me on Hurdy Gurdy, guitar and mandolin. The Hurdy Gurdy is multi tracked. The bridge in the video is the famous single track bridge in Llanrwst, North Wales, UK. An 'Itinerant Mendicant' is a wandering beggar. The Hurdy Gurdy is also known by it's ancient French name the Vielle a Roue. For more info and CDs go to my website bernieparry.com. The Dark Island (trad.) arrangement by Bernie Parry

My arrangement and performance of a traditional Scottish tune featuring guitar, mandolin and hurdy gurdy. Guitar tuning DADF#AD. My nice beach film interrupted by damned tourists. Never mind. This tune is on my instrumental album 'There Are No Words'. For CDs go to my website bernieparry.com.
End Of The Romany Road. Bernie Parry
Просмотров 32513 лет назад
I've written quite a few songs about my Romany heritage. In this one I, strangely, claim not to understand gypsy pride and what it is to be a gypsy. My family came off the road many many years ago so perhaps I don't really understand. For more info and CDs go to my website bernieparry.com. No pegs for sale though.

Hi Bernie, Great song - brings me to reflect on music missed since I stepped away from running a folk club some 40 year ago. Don't know if you will remember St Andrews - compere Andy Cassidy. I was the other Andy who did the door, P.A., fly-posting and set up the room for the evening. The other thing I did was for myself - I recorded as many guests as I could. Recently, whilst still able, I decided I should share these recordings with those, old and new, who would appreciate them. Those uploaded to RUclips thus far can be found by looking for St Andrews Folk Club. I have digitised the audio for your night at St Andrews in August 1975 and am working on an upload. I hope my doing this will have your approval!! I have been unable to find an alternative method of contacting you. Please reply!! Looking forward now to listening on RUclips to those of your later works, which I have sadly missed. Regards Andy Watson

Hi Bernie! Just bought your CD „Sailing to the Moon“ and see that you learned The Ballad of Louis Collins from my old mate John (Jon?) Graham in Sunderland. John and I cut a demo LP together in 1969 and sent it to John Fahey, who was not impressed - but I still have a nice letter from him, with his comments. What a small world!

In Chorlton, Manchester, about four years ago, a good singer did this and was quite surprised when I joined in with the chorus. I was at the Durham Festival 76 or 77 and someone was singing it during a singaround. Bernie walked in at that moment. We all knew what was happening, and it was quite funny in its own way. There was a lot of respect. It was an excellent festival by the way.

Where I grew up there was a young man who was in this category, yes, he was simple, but such a lovely happy individual, he would cycle around waving at people and was always so happy. I'd always stop and have a little conversation with him if I could. Whenever I hear this song I think of him. I have it on a CD sung by a local relatively well-known local folk singer (in the North East) who sings it beautifully. I've just realised the CD is 23 years old ... OMG the time flies.

A Geordie friend in Australia played a recording of it and taught it to me in 1981. I've performed it since then, but failed with the Geordie accent, with UK people saying it sounded Irish. Thanks for this recording so I can change the accent to yours! Great song. I couple it with "Mr. Bojangles", about another retiree in the U.S. South.

Hi Bernie. It’s hayley again on a different account. Still listening to this song 7 years later - for some reason I still connect to this song despite my taste in music changing significantly. I think it’s because it bring a me back to how I felt 7 years ago. A student enjoying the sun with no worries and now like pressures get to me from time to time. But thank you

It may not be your best, but it certainly cuts through me, bones and all, every single time I listen to it. Every time I work in my garden I hum, whistle, or sing this song. You captured so much with just a single song. Continue being humble as you are, but know that this is one of the single greatest songs ever written.

Hello there Bernie, in the back end of the last century I had a small video production company and was approached by some people who were trying the bring back to life the defunct Metheringham Fair Lincolnshire. I had heard your delightful song and it was still somewhere in the background of my mind. When researching Metheringham I spotted a on old chap wandering about who's gait perfectly fitted your song so his image was captured and used in the VHS tape along with me singing and two pals playing guitar. Many thanks.
