I’m so glad this video popped up on my feed! I’ve only just started spinning and a friend who has lots of experience advised me to start off with a supported spindle instead of a drop spindle because she knows I’m a lace knitter. You pointed out something I’ve been struggling with: I need to hold my fibre more gently. The action of spinning itself wasn’t an issue, I got that pretty quickly and am producing close to laceweight singles (haven’t tried plying yet). But I did get some inconsistencies and it turns out these were caused when I was gripping onto my fibre. You need to hold it as if it were the most fragile of baby birds. As you said it.s counter-intuitive and none of the other videos I watched -and they were many - mentioned it. You did. Thank you! I also noticed you did something I’ve figured out to do: before or during the adding of py finished yarn onto the cop, I have started to even out inconsistencies in my yarn. Gently untwist it a bit, and ever so gently draw out the thicker bits to even them out, then add a bit of twist. It’s bot the fastest way to get consistent yarn or to spin, but until I’ve learned to spin more consistently it’ll get me where I want to be. So thank you again! How an old video can help a beginner so many years after it’s been shared on RUclips… 😊 Now I can’t help but wonder how you spin today… I can only hope fabulously!

Thank you for the video. I have been reading up on how to spin merino on a spindle. Spinning off of the fold is one of the techniques that was mentioned. Your demonstrations on both the wheel and spindle were very helpful!

I can understand :) to be honest my spinolution is the first wheel I got it to work on, I will try others later.. But I was so please to finally get long draw to work for me.. Ive made about 400g of aran weight yarn.. My plan being to make about a kg or so to then start knitting me up a jumper, my long term spinning goal .. I started spinning - like most of us, to make yarn to knit or crochet with - but I got side tracked by just looking at the pretty yarns I made.. So, I had set myself a long term plan of make me a jumper. I want to have a jumper I can look at and wear and go I truly uttlerly made this. I made the yarn, I made the jumper, and almost certainly I'll have tweaked the pattern so can argue I made the pattern too, Im determind to get there.. Doing it short draw didnt seem like a good plan, Im not hugely fast at long draw, I mean its not like 100g appears in 20 mins which you sometimes get the illusion it will, but having to stop and pull chunks off my top to put over my finger slows it down so I do a handful of chunks to work through and then move the bobbin point, and pull off the next bunch of chunks.. I have a 32oz bobbin so, I can fit a lot of yarn on it.. I went for 300g so far, as i was concerned as to how much fitted on my ball winder later, but being short draw and denser, I ddint really want a 1.5kg jumper.. I wanted a warm but reasonable weight jumper and long draw will give me a lighter fluffier yarn which will help. Did you give up on spinning completely?
Liz Kimber wow...that sounds fantastic. Definitely you've learned and KNOW a lot. I made some really pretty things with the yarn I made, well got really nice skeins and color combos. Anyways, sounds like you really enjoy spinning. Im so glad for you., YES, i have gave it up Completely and never going back to spinning, I prefer knitting and ONLY knitting. I think i had an allergy to the roving too, cause i would get terribly itchy etc, never with wool, but roving was awful, maybe it was the dyes too. i have no idea.
I think like lots of things everyone has their thing.. So far Ive decided spinning seems mainly my thing, I always hated knitting, loathed it, was forced as a kid and I guess all that hate just went right in there.. as an adult I taught myself crochet, took to it like a duck to water, loved it.. then I bust my knee, got insomnia, watched lucy neatby doing double knitting, fell in love, discovered continental knitting, eg pick knitting, love that compared to british throw knitting which helped, now I will happily knit.. I also tried weaving, and thats kinda fun too, but spinning, spinning is so my thing.. almost to the point if i never make stuff with it, im happy just to make yarn.. of course I now have a stash of yarn Ive made and never done anything with.. but.. hence I wanna do this jumper, I want even just 1 person to say "Hey, where did you buy that" and go.. "I span the yarn, and I knitted it, thank you" .. :D
While I did enjoy the video, I was not able to tell what was happening with the spindle.
This is not a long draw, or even close. It's a backwards draft and that's all. This adds to the existing confusion that 'longdraw' just means pulling your arm back further! A true long draw involves making a series of large slubs that are then drawn out to make the yarn. There are several good videos on RUclips that demonstrate a true long draw. Also, when you spun from the fold, did you know you are spinning semi worsted? This is a shame as beginners watching this will believe you and then never be able to achieve woollen yarn, just a semi worsted which is the opposite of what they need.
Where did you get the idea that a long draw consists of making slubs to further draw out? That's incorrect. Slubs happen, yes. You then draw those slubs out to add air into the fiber (which is the point of long draw... an airier yarn). But you are not going in to make the slubs on purpose. They happen and you deal with it. I get the feeling you may not know the difference between woolen and worsted spinning. You might need to brush up on what exactly makes a worsted or woolen yarn. (dense yarn versus an airier yarn in an nutshell). You might also want to brush up on your manners.
Yep not longdraw. Longdraw is done with rolags not top.

Nicely explained video. However, difficult to see the brown yarn on the spindle. Close-ups would be preferable to seeing the whole body with the yarn in the background. I have never seen this technique before--and cannot see the spindle turning. Although I like the suggestions you make about the blending and opening up of the fibers, I need to find a video which shows the work more close up. Thanks.

4 years ago now. Are you almost as fast at "they" are :-)? Thanks I agree with Janean Easley. Slow is good when giving instructions. I could not see the better thread at all. I wish I could see what made it a better product? What was the second thread? The first was Alpaca. THANKS SO MUCH! I like the pulling as opposed to the carding. Pulling does not require a new tool.

@CraftyFlorrie although i agree on wishing that there were close up shots of the hands, i completely DISAGREE that it made it seem like beth isn't educated on the subject. also, you *can* actually see the yarn she's spinning, only because it's the size of a thread it's *harder* to see. but it's there, it looks like fishing line coming from her hand... or magician's thread. but beth's demeanor alone shows how comfortable she is with spinning on a russian style spindle!
this video is very helpful! i agree with ravenbylake: i felt like your video was thorough because you weren't rushing, you were actually quite soothing! usually people rush through videos, talking & moving faster, trying to make the video shorter. but for the person trying to learn, who's already frustrated & anxious about it *or at least that's how i get* it makes me even more anxious, therefore LESS likely to succeed at learning the skill! i sound like a freak now! XD GOOD VIDEO!!

Needs more close up of the spindle and the hands. I couldn't even tell if there was fiber on the spindle. It made it seem like you were demonstrating something you barely know.
This is very informative. Perhaps you could make a DVD video, you teach well and there is always more room on my shelf. Maybe try contacting interweave and see what they would say.
