Hi, I'm Heather Kitchen, a certified Senior Iyengar Yoga teacher.
I first came to yoga in 1995 out of curiosity and little did I know how profoundly it was going to impact my life. Not only did I find relief from feelings of anxiety, depression and body dysmorphia, but I also found healing and a very real sense of "coming home" to my-Self.
Iyengar Yoga provides us with a holistic and creative approach to working with our body, mind and spirit. Attention to detail and use of props allows us to access the practice safely and sharpens our focus.
In these videos I will teach you the method of yoga that changed not only my physical body but also my mindset. I invite you to join me on this journey of Yoga, as we navigate being in a human body, and foster a new appreciation for our physical form, whatever shape it is in.

A lot of people on the web talk about how long to hold each pose, but no one really talks about how long to rest in between each pose. Maybe I am wrong, but you figure when you are in the middle of a stretch your muscles lose blood flow, so a certain amount of rest should be needed before going into the next pose. What I am trying to figure out is what that magic number might be, because holding an active pose for a minute then following up with a minute-long rest pose only gives you 30 active poses per hour, whereas if the rest period were shorter, let's say 30 seconds, then you can do about 40 active poses per hour. I read somewhere that it only takes blood about 15 seconds to circulate throughout the body, so perhaps the rest period could be reduced even further. What are your thoughts on this? How long is it recommended to rest between each active pose to avoid injury, while being short enough that you can fit a decent sized yoga sequence into a busy lifestyle?
Interesting question and worthwhile considering. In my opinion, the notion of resting in between each pose can be considered differently depending on varying factors such as what poses are being practiced eg standing poses you can "rest" in Tadasana for a few seconds or as long as it takes you to steady the breath and feel quiet after the exertion of the previous standing pose whereas forward bends we may not need anytime of rest in between each pose as they are inherently quietening and don't require as much exertion. I frequently use Uttanasana (standing forward fold) as a resting pose in between some strong poses such as arm balances and even standing poses. I would also consider how well the breath can be modified in each pose so that the pose itself feels "restful". Having said that, holding headstand for 5 minutes and slowing the breath and remaining quiet within oneself still requires a few moments of rest after coming down. The length of time taken to rest can be personal depending upon one's own level and experience of practice, one's health condition along with what each individual pose is and how the breath is being managed. So in short, I don't think there is a one size fits all to answer your question, just like there is no one size fits all for the timing and holding of the poses.
Thank you, wonderful progression to Titthibhasana. Loved the use of bricks at the back buttocks to learn the work of the legs. Titthibhasana is more do-able for me at this time than EPKoundinyasana (no surprise I guess) which I find harder to do. I'm in pursuit of it though! Thank you for your good work 🙏🙏

Sorry to say high blood pressure however should avoid having head below hearth …. You should know this as IY teacher….. please change title of the video….
