Tomba 2 seems like an absolute mess, padded out like crazy. Slow bad voice acting for everything. Slow bad fetch quests. Slow popups every time anything happens. Annoying music during said slow bad voice acting. How did this fall ao flat compared to the first game?

Anyways I beat this game on PS3 a long while back, some time around 2018, and seeing this video now makes me want to go back and try to complete it. Properly this time!

One thing I don't think you mentioned. During the evil pig boss fights, the pigs lose their wands/staffs when they're thrown into the pig bag twice. This is why their attack changes in the third phase.

There's a few differences between the US and European version too. Most notably having a different intro.

Wait, pump rocks change color when you step on them? I never noticed that before and remember having to look up a walkthrough to work out what pump rocks were

I started playing this and was trying to work out why the controls felt slightly off. You're definitely right about the acceleration and momentum.

Im glad to see this video getting the love it deserves, i cant tell you how many times ive watched it the last few years. Cant wait until Tomba comes out on ps4 and i can play it again. Thanks for helping me relive it while i havent been able to play the game myself!

On a good note it got re-released so now maybe everyone can experience it that couldn't play more than the demo. It's still a good platformer even though it's nearly 30 yrs old. And great walkthrough 👍

Well, never expected to see another Tombi! video from you after two big retrospectives... ...crazy times we live in, huh? Eh, I preordered LRG's special physical edition of 1, I'll probably do the same with 2 (even though I DESPISE LRG)... bought the originals for an equivalent of $150, so... might as well go all in. Thanks for reminding me of my bad life decisions.

For what it's worth I played through the Steam version this week and had zero issues. No crashes, performed perfectly, and the new QOL made it a joy to play through. I liked all of the different options in regards to screen size and thought the CRT filter was a nice touch. I wished there was new content like new quests or areas, but as far as a port of an old game with QOL, it was fantastic. No complaints with the PC port for me.

That instant accelleration of the grey/white form of Tombi looks absurd. I often decided not to use it in the original because I preferred precission over speed. I would not be able to handle this version at all

Seeing how you max out the exps as soon as possible, I hope you still explain you can collect 3 different fish to alternatively max em out instead too. (Only about halfway in at the time of this comment. Great vid btw.)

Really appreciate this video. Loved Tomba 1&2 as a kid like many. Still have my original PS1 copies. I was hesitant to purchase this given LRG's track record and after diving into the Steam discussion forums around release. Just about every RUclips video I skimmed over covering this release was extremely surface with people who had very little experience with the originals. Not the case with you!!! Grabbed a pre-order for the switch version. Fingers crossed the issues are ironed out before print but it'll be nice just to have all the same for the gallery mode. Going to probably do a run on duckstation in the meantime. Looking forward to any coverage you do regarding the Tomba 2 port whenever that drops.

I was doing some digging around PC version (which fortunately worked for me day 1 and I even managed to get all achievements). The problem with modern soundtrack is because it's not played "by the game" but "by the emulator". OG soundtrack plays directly from the game emulated files, just like you would run the original disc or it's image on emulator/console. Modern OST works by muting the OG one, and playing external music file (kinda like a music player) via triggers based on the game's memory changes - hence for example, the music starts on the loading screen, because the area change trigger happens when the area starts to load. Also, very nice video.

well I do feel the one with soundtrack starting in the loading screen instead after. makes a big difference. I cant believe trophies are glitched. I ordered my physical game, but it seems I have to wait a year for it, awesome

God I wish they do a Tomba remake adding in all the cut content and expanding on what they originally wanted to make. Crazy how much was cut and yet the game is still fantastic

Some bugs that need addressed on the console copy but I had fun with it. It's wild how different 2 is from 1 though.

Finding the Miner's Ring just randomly as a kid still baffles me that I managed to do it. I was just messing around and stumbled on it.

One of my favourite games. Got it back in 1999 after playing the heck out of the demo and again in 2006 when our first copy went missing when it was like in 150 AUD. Nothing has ever been made like it and I adore it. Great video!
