    I got accepted to a PsyD program after completing my MS in clinical psychology; however, I decided not to go due to the cost of this particular doctoral program. I may try again in the future, but tbh, I am getting my supervision as an intern, and I’m set to make six figures (gross, not net) without getting the full pay ( a lot of supervised positions will do a split of the insurance reimbursement, so you might get 60-70% of what the insurance pays while your supervisor gets 30-40% of it). I can only imagine how much I’ll make as a fully licensed LMHC/LPC (LMHC in FL but I’m moving back to GA which calls the same license an LPC). I am interested in neuropsychology, and enjoy testing but the time to become a board-certified neuropsychologist is CRAZY. I kinda wanna just start my life already. I’ve already been in school forever lol. Also, I currently work as a psychometrist so I’m getting the testing experience without the responsibility of a clinical or neuro psychologist. The thing that sucks is I always wanted the doctorate (or thought I did), but I think my priorities have changed now that I’m no longer 18-20. Only thing that might be better imo is being able to do testing for a couple hrs and getting the same pay as a master’s level therapist does in a week seeing 15-30 clients (depending on your pricing). I’ve found that the mental health field doesn’t pay all that well at all unless you’re in private practice (which is what I’ll be doing). For some reason, our field is not as highly valued even tho mental health can affect literally every aspect of one’s life, including physical health. Anyway, I’m off my soapbox.😅😂thank you for the insight in your video!

    • @leoscaletta5098
      @leoscaletta5098 3 месяца назад

      Dream interpretation can be a topic of discussion within a therapeutic conversation depending on the goals of the client. How you navigate the conversation will greatly depend on your theoretical approach. Typically, psychoanalysis and Jungian therapist do more dream analysis. Or I should say, being it into therapy without the client asking. I personally believe if the client would find it helpful to talk about dreams then we can explore them rather then Me making them talk about them.

      In the US you can’t call yourself a psychologist unless you have completely your doctorate and have taken the EPPP. With a masters degree, you would use the title of the license you could sit for depending on your master (e.g LPC, LMFT, LCSW, etc). But there are places like in Mexico where you can call yourself a psychologist with just a masters.

Not only is the academic expectation and courseload intense but you also feel a little out of place because at this point most of your friends are working full time and maybe even starting families etc and then you're still in academia. Hello, I currently go to school in Texas and will be doing my post graduate studies soon here as well. I’m not interested in research but more of a clinical practice, which leaves me with 2 choices: MA in Clinical Psychology or a PsyD in clinical psychology. I know that here in the state of Texas if you pursue a MA in Clinical Psychology you qualify for an LPA license. I also know that if you meet certain criteria you’re able to practice independently as an LPA. My question is, if this is the case what’s the difference between a PsyD and a masters degree? Wouldn’t they fall under the same thing? I’m so confused lol. I hope you could help and thank you for the video!

    • @leoscaletta5098
      @leoscaletta5098 3 месяца назад

      Hi 👋 sorry I’m getting back to this so late. You might have gotten the answer you are looking for but I’ll still chime in lol. So first off, you don’t need to go through a clinical program to be an LPC, LMFT, LCSW, etc. you can also go through a counseling program and also be a LPC, LMFT, LCSW, etc. I feel like the main thing people talk about is clinical programs but you can achieve the same goal with a counseling program. As long as they both are accredited. A PsyD is a doctorate degree. The main goal is to be a psychologist vs a therapist/counselor. So you’ll sit for a different licensure exam. When you graduate with a PsyD and pass the EPPP you’ll be a licensed psychologist (LP). When you graduate with a master you’ll take an exam for your specific license you want and were prepared for and would be called whatever licensure exam you’ll sit for. Hope this helps :)

      Somthing to consider is what license is more recognized by the public in your area. Here in Texas, LPCs, LMFTs LCSWs , and LP are the standard. I’ve never heard of a licensed mental health counselor before, and most agencies won’t say in their job description they are looking for an LMHC here in Texas. TBH it’s almost always LPC or LMFT. With that being said. It’s also what you want to focus on and your job duties. LCSWs primary focus and training are case management and looking at the system; with a secondary focus on psychotherapy and counseling theories . Whereas the others put more emphasis on counseling theory. It comes down to how you see your role and helping

As for concentrations, that honestly depends on the places you apply to. I’d recommend looking at the PsyD programs brochure to get a since if what kind of candidate their looking for, contact a current graduate student in the program, and give the training director a call or email to ask questions.

      Usually doctoral programs require a masters degree in psychology or a closely related discipline of at least 45 semester hours from a regionally accredited institution. So, clinical psychology or counseling would be fine. Just depends on which one would fit the program more. My PsyD program favors counseling psychology. If you’re asking if you can provide counseling services after your masters in clinical psychology, then yes, as long as the program is accredited and prepares you to sit for a licensure exam (e.g lpc, LMFT, lcsw, etc)

      Im from MA, if you wanted to be a therapist youd have to get a masters in counseling or a masters in social work. (LMHC - licensed mental health counselor, LSW - licensed social worker, or LMFT - licensed marriage and family therapist) all of these are three separate schoolings and different degrees. At the end of completing your masters in either one of these fields, you then have to do an apprenticeship for 1-2 years in order to later become licensed. Otherwise if you wanted to stick to masters in strictly psych, you would have to wait until your PHD or Psyd in order to become licensed and able to be an actual therapist. Masters in psych does not lead to becoming a therapist. Id speak to an advisor at your school to help you further.

    How is it and where are you at now? I’m in my third year PhD counseling psych and feel the same way. It feels increasingly not worth it considering in a few years the field will likely reduce schooling required since we’re not gonna have enough practitioners to meet the demands of the rieldb

      At this point I’m already so far into the program it’s not worth stopping 😅. I just finished up my dissertation and should be defending early spring. Then I’m off to internship. I’m nearly done! It’s been a crazy journey but I can honestly say I’ve learned a lot and made some great friends along the way. I’m sure I can’t see it now but my future self will be happy I went through it… or perhaps that’s what I’m telling myself to finish off strong haha 😂. You got this my friend and only you know what’s best for you!!

    Great video! I appreciate that it was quick and to the point. I’m finishing up undergrad with a major in psychology, and I’m seeking out all of the knowledge that I can to decide on my next steps. Also, congrats!!!

      Your comment means a lot. Its been difficult to keep up with uploads while seeing clients doing dissertation spending time with loved ones but I’m so happy these these videos I’ve made are still inspiring others. Maybe one day I’ll get back into it. Good luck on your journey mr friend ☺️

    How do you take care of yourself financially while doing your PsyD??

      I see clients on the side. I was working for a group practice but eventually left and opened my own practice. My partner has also been a huge help!

    What apps, websites, have you found most useful in studying for exams and that you recommend for someone just starting a psyD Clinical Psychology program?

    • @leoscaletta5098
      @leoscaletta5098 Год назад

      Good question! I dont really use apps or websites to study. Our program doesn’t have a lot of test or quizzes. Mainly papers and presentations. And group work. The number one app I use is called waffle: shared journal. Staying connected with loved ones and self reflection is important in my opinion. So this journaling app lets you share a journal with others.

    It sounds to me like you’re just hitting your late 20s early 30s I think everybody kind of loses friends, and find out who the true ones are going to be that stick around around that age
