LOCUS of CONTROL
Hey everyone, as many of you know I am very passionate about burnout in medicine. As an ER doc for over 30 years and health-care executive for 15 years, I have seen the toll that burnout has on doctors, PAs, nurses, medical staff, etc. It is widespread in medicine today. Here's a simple way to prevent some forms of burnout in terms of things you can and cannot control. Hope this helped! -Dr K

So profound
It truly is simple, nothing profound!
Thank you for sharing such value sir. It makes sense now.
Thank you for the support! 🙌
Sounds like the executive branch
The title? Haha. -Dr K
Y’all really inspire me to be even more disciplined in my studies, and your dad’s advice is very useful and applicable to my life, so keep this stuff up. I’m in a community college studying mechanical engineering, so I’m not in the medical field like y’all are, but it’s my dream to have an engineering job and make enough money to buy a few Porsches and some other cars. I’m glad I found this channel!
That means a lot to hear! Keep up the hardwork. -Dr K
As if work is not a part of ones life. That's horrible to consider work as something separate from the real life From my perspective, you should always feel alive and not just exist. That's vital to remain authetic to myself everywhere at every time
Love this vid…
Thank you! -Mike
Sleek ride good sir
Thank you!
noticed you get 7hrs of sleep haha, is that by choice, would you get 9hrs if you could?
I would say 7 hours is good. Some people do 6 others do 8. 7 is a safe middle ground. Sleep correlates with metabolism and brain health (cognition) so it’s very important to maintain adequate sleep! -Mike
love this style of video, you are not boring like you say you are haha, was entertaining
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. -Mike
love this style of video
Hey Dr K you are doing amazing job by telling us the reality which eventually affect our current life rather than the BS all over the internet Further i want to know in detail how to be more present and not only think about future in financial terms and live everyday at full i think I'm but more anxious about money or only future goals realted to money only as the internet potray us that only thing you need in your life is lot of money Btw love you from Pakistan 🇵🇰
It is amazing to get messages from all over the world! I think you're right. You need a certain amount of money to be comfortable, but at a certain point in a materialistic sense, there is diminishing returns. You have to find meaning in life; career, family, sports, etc. That, at least in my experience, decreases anxiety and uncertainty. You can control what you can and can't control what you can't. Be well. -Dr K
Any chance you could make a follow up video discussing the sickness aspect? I was just curious what the potential "solution" would be to keep yourself from getting sick after a stressful situation? In my experience I have actually found that being in chronically stressful environments, such as when I was at University, make my immune system very weak, and the smallest change to my sleep, exercise, etc would cause me to get sick and heal very slowly.
Absolutely, it’s most likely cortisol levels. Stress weakens your immune system through degrading immune cells and causing inflammation. It also promotes break down of muscle and increase in sugar (hyperglycemia). This leads to chronic insulin release, fat storage, diabetes, and poor wound healing, etc. I’ll make a follow up video.
The golden era of YT is returning, great channel
You’re too kind! I’m a regular ER doc that wants to change this system and world for the better. Appreciate the kind message. Thanks for your support. -Dr K
As an engineer this was still helpful.
Love to hear it! Thank you. -Dr K

Very insightful, thank you!
You’re welcome! Thanks for the kind message and feedback. -Dr K
nice CS
Thanks 🙌❤️
There is some interesting phenomena where only RUclipsrs with around 2.7k subs are the best. Not sure if its that people really open up and spill knowledge at that point where they feel like they are gaining traction or what but it's kinda funny. That said. Amazing car talks dropping gems for us.
Thanks for the very kind message! I’m really happy to hear the experiences that I’ve had, help you! -Dr K
I’m writing an essay on work life balance and I think this video just changed my conclusion on it. Great video!
That means a lot! Thanks for the message. -Dr K
What I’m hearing is the reasoning for no work/life balance in your sector is the lack of bodies to sustain the expectation of coverage. I’m not onboard with sacrificing a finite resource like life expectancy to sustain a business I have no horse in. Couldn’t one constitute your methodology as a means of responsibility shifting?
That’s an amazing point. I think medicine has many intricacies in terms of its structure. Fundamentally, there is a primary care shortage in America. A lack of primary care coverage and the unwillingness of certain specialities to accept patients due to their perceived specialization means many physicians (FM, IM, ER, even general surgery) are stuck bearing the brunt of a sicker population with less back up. This means more strenuous shifts (even if it’s the same # of days worked a month), more expected shifts per month, and a greater responsibility to manage patients that are sicker; even outside of normal work hours. This is compounded by the fact that there is a smaller number of primary care physicians already. Reframing your mindset helps, but does it solve the roof of the problem? Absolutely not. There is a sorely needed overhaul of the medical system in the US, and likely many other counties in the world.
my football coach always told me sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do to be where you want to be in life
What you said about the mind stopping you and limiting you reminds me of “can’t hurt me “ by david goggins he talks about it being a mental thing and anything you feel is just a feeling and you can actually push yourself to places you never thought you could go to
Many times it is a mindset. You can’t push yourself to a breaking point, but realizing our perceived maximum might be one actual maximum is very interesting.
You should be much bigger on RUclips it's shocking you're not! Anyhow thanks for the encouraging words as always
Thanks for the kind message. I don’t care about the notoriety as long as people find my mistakes useful!
Great message, especially the part about failure. I'm learning to get used to and accept failure as part of the process. I've failed a lot but I won't stop trying. Thanks. Ps you sit very close to the wheel lol
I do sit close, don’t I haha. And that’s the best attitude. Don’t give up 🙌 -Dr K
Fantastic message and a great reminder that I needed!
Love to hear it! Thank you! -Dr K
Some great mid-week motivation. Thanks Doc

I’m going through a pretty hard time in life right now really figuring out who I am as a man and watching these help me every day I’m 21 and have so much on my plate already but these help me get by deep down! Keep up the wisdom 🤙🏻
Thanks for the kind message. I’m happy to hear it helps! -Dr K
Keep up the hardwork. Things take time. You will fail. I still fail to this day in business, finance, life in general and I’m 62. It’s how many times you learn from those failures. It makes me a better doctor and person to learn from mistakes. -Dr K
Love these videos, they always keep me motivated to care about my mental health and to learn about myself. Sending Love from Germany
Thank you! Happy to hear that they are helpful.
love your content? can you share with how did you get wealth? what advices can you give to be like you
I would not consider myself wealthy. I live a comfortable life. I did well in certain ventures and poorly in others. I picked a career that afforded me good pay, satisfaction, and the ability to help others. I used my knowledge of medicine and medical leadership to make money. But, I don’t offer financial advice because that’s not my speciality. My recommendation is follow your passions, but be realistic. If you’re passionate about something that may not compensate you as much as other fields, you may be wealthy in a different sense.
Show us the sls black series that’s one of my dream cars
I sold it!
I love hearing you speak so much, please keep doing these types of videos!!
Thank you! -Dr K
I should mute my slack notifications whenever I’m home. I feel as if I can never get away from work
It’s tough. I used to have that problem all the time with the hospital. Vacation, birthdays, time with my significant other, etc. all impacted by it.
I believe in work life balance. I worked in broadcast for many years and consisted of lots of travel and time away from home. Now I transitioned into a technical project manager and can work remote 95% of the time. Now I can take my kids to school, go get breakfast or dinner with my significant other. I can manage my time accordingly and have the ability to accomplish whatever it is. The balance is being able to have a career without sacrificing too much of your personal or family time.
That’s a great perspective and it’s good to hear that you have a good balance in life now!
Great video!
Thanks 🙌
I live in Brooklyn, about an hour away from my college. Everyone’s first comment is “you drive that far each day?”, but it is precisely that “transition” you spoke of. It is me, only me, no conversations, no work, it’s like a decompression chamber to free yourself from the obligations you leave on campus or at work. I found my self at a higher stress level when I lived 5 minutes from my classes on campus, there was no transition period, I lived, ate, and breathed school. Great video.
That’s a great perspective. Doing routine things that help you decompress is a great idea too. Thanks for sharing! -Dr K
Relatable.
