I am your very own Resident Eccentric. I make random essays on the internet about things I love. Stay awhile and listen.
My profile picture is the fantastic, "Stańczyk" by Jan Matejko. And my profile banner is the also great "Erlkönig" by Julius von Klever. I also often use, "The Lute Player" by Frans Hals as a profile picture on places like Bluesky.

Fatum Betula - A False World
A note for the way certain places look in the video, I used a toggle to turn off effects that may be harmful to people who are sensitive to flashing/shifting lights, because of that certain zones look a little more plain than they are otherwise, such as the nightmare version of the fishing valley. If you play the game yourself with these features turned on, you should experience new effects I didn't get to see and there are entire zones changed! Another reason to play the game on your own!
The most personal I've gotten in a game review yet. But I tried to keep it from getting uncomfortable and hopefully succeeded. Fatum Betula is a very enjoyable and unique PS1 inspired Horror Game that s...

Fatal Frame (& Kairo) - Japanese Horror, Technology, and Loss

Fatal Frame & Kairo. I love J-Horror and it was only a matter of time until it became a topic on this channel. This video combines many of my favorites but namely of course the two tiular ones: Fatal Frame ( also known as Project Zero ), & Kairo ( also known as Pulse ). I feel these two share a similar soul in how they feel about the nature of ghosts and spirits. This video is a discussion of b...
War in the North - A LOTR Dark Alliance
Просмотров 1,6 тыс.7 месяцев назад
War in the North is a bit of an oddity, coming one console too late for its style, in a setting that only just got permission to use its full material, and from a studio about to be merged into another. Even as a Tolkien mega-fan and a kid who would claim Champions of Norrath and Dark Alliance (also by the same studio) as my favorite games just a few years prior, I didn't like it. But revisitin...

This one took a decent bit of work, I wanted to make sure I represented it fairly and succinctly. Especially due to it being a review copy and from developers who I now admire, I hope I showed their game off in a good and honest way. I did really enjoy this game, it is lucky that my first ever review copy was for a game I like quite a lot! I will continue to play it now in my regular rotation o...
Rise of the Ronin - A Samurai Love Letter

I didn’t plan on making this a video initially, but my love for the setting and the game itself made me want to make it. I think that shows, this is more or less a love-letter to TeamNinja and even the samurai-genre as a whole. Which is funny since Rise of the Ronin itself is a love-letter. I’m fairly happy on the editing side of things, but holy crap the gameplay got compressed to Hell and bac...

I am working on a few different but pretty long video-projects right now. So I wanted to put out something in the meantime. This is another essay. This is the fastest I've gotten a video done so far! Only two and a half days of work. It was fun to do and flowed pretty easily. I love this game and wanted to try out a straight-up review style video. In making it I've discovered that in the future I'm going to continue with this style of review where the latter half recounts a roleplaying journey I made. I already naturally roleplay in games...
Viking: Battle for Asgard - The Forgotten Total War Spin-off
Просмотров 1 тыс.11 месяцев назад
This is one of my favorite games of all time. My ultimate comfort game (along with a few others like Morrowind, Oblivion, DA:O, Bard's Tale, Champions of Norrath, etc.). It will soon be Viking: Battle for Asgard's 16th birthday! And to celeberate I wanted to give it the retrospective treatment. Some dev history, reception, and a summary of the game along with a (biased) review. This is the long...
Kingdoms of Amalur - Trying to Escape Fate (House of Ballads Analysis)

Thanks to my friend Vulpix for nudging me to play Kingdoms of Amalur when I was asked her for a recommendation of a stress-free and mindless fun RPG. It worked! Though I still did end up using my mind some, but most of my many hours spent on this game was spell-casting and slashing. Amalur is not a game I have a storied past with, literally starting my first playthrough just a month and a half ...
Small Hopes - The Importance of Hope within LOTR and Life Itself

This is my first RUclips video, an essay on a scene within the Lord of the Rings that has always affected me. The beginning is unscripted as I had trouble keeping to the script, so easing into it helped. Everything from me setting the scene to the end is pre-written. This is my first time ever doing video editing as well as uploading a video (I have some experience with audio engineering). As s...
i ironically cried at the tv segment. The line “you look just like your father” cuts me deep. i don't hate my father, but i don't love him either. he's done a lot of things wrong and i can never forgive him for that. i don't see him as a parent nor a loved one...and it makes me feel angry at times. but every time i look in the mirror i see him staring back at me. it terrifies me. i live in a small town where everyone knows each other, and my father has a lot of old friends and acquaintances, and every fucking time they recognize me and go “wow, you look just like your father”...i want to cry every time i hear that. it's wrong, it's painful and im scared. i don't want to have any resemblance to this man, i don't want to relive his life, but everytime i fear that i will. anyway good video, man. Keep it up! I'm looking forward to more stuff like this <3
Really cool video, and very put together, that being said it's hard to listen to, I think your over pronouncing your words, and there too pregnant with pauses. It sort of verbs in my ears, I think it's a reading problem and not your voice.
As far as Fatal Frame 1 reviews/essays go, this is one of the better ones. The comparison to Kairo was very interesting and made it stand out. My personal favourite Zero game is 2, though all five games have something different they excel at that it's difficult for me to rank them. Should you get to Crimson Butterfly, I recommend you the comic Yokai Hunter by Daijirō Morohoshi. It's a short read, and very influential to Zero.
@@Philemon_Logos I plan to finish and cover at the very least the rest of the PS2 trilogy this year! And gotcha. Thank you for the recommendation, Yokai Hunter looks neat!
thank you youtube recommended, i loved your analysis and I'm excited to see what else you will post! I will give this a game a play whenever I can :)!
@@stevebrofr thank you! Both you and RUclips recommend lol. I'm glad you enjoyed it. There'll be another video soon! By at least mid February.

I think there's a lot of ways that people can process their own baggage in the suburbia zone. I don't think this was intended, for example, but a transfem reading not only works, it's pretty gutting to me. "You are your bone structure. Differences unite all the people who don't have them. Buy what we want you to want. Buy a gun. Lay in your bed and die." And there's little you, too young to realize you're different yet, almost too young to even HAVE a gender yet, in this incredibly gender neutral abstract presentation. Soaking up all the messages from the people around you. And then one last message: "You look just like you're father." I... don't, anymore. But I used to, I looked just like him. I heard that most of my life. I love and admire my dad, and I spent a big portion of my life bleeding out my inner child to be like him, because he was a good man, and if I had to be a man, I at least wanted to be good like him. But now it's the face I've spent 3 years scrubbing off so I could see my own underneath. I never want to hear that I look like my father ever again.
@MaddieM4 Thank you so much for leaving this comment. Hearing how it tied into your own thoughts and experiences in a similar yet very different way to mine is very touching to read. I had thought of how so many of these lines could resonate with so many different people for so many different reasons - and reading how it resonated with you has proven that to me and gotten me emotional. A beautiful comment. Thank you for sharing!
Hellloooooo I’m your 800th subscriber
I'll be perfectly honest, your review is great and the game in question was something that interested me a lot, but your voice is simply really hard to listen to, it made watching the video somewhat annoying.
I love it, it’s like grimbeard
I got 200 hours on this game
this game is so beautiful i played it like 10 times
41:03 you should be proud to look like your father if you liked him,
OH!? 500 Calibur Contract is the same dev!? Damn, can't wait for her to realize she's a girl
"my pain is realizing that, even though we've done all we've done, we are still the same and we live like our parents"
Christ this hit me in a way i wasnt really expecting. Being in my early 20's its rough man. And while I might not have lost my father to death, dude bailed on me as a kid and he's more of a blip here and there in my life. I get told I look like him, part of me wanted that and part of me resented it so much. I dont know where I am, but I think knowing that Im not him sorta helps.
I'm sorry to hear that. My dad wasn't present much before his death and we had a complicated relationship. So I can understand that but I'm really sorry to hear it. I know it's painful. I hope the video did more good than harm though! And that you enjoyed my recounting and personal ramblings. I know it may seem a little cruel but knowing that others have gone through the same things and persevered always means a lot to me. It's part of why I mentioned the book the Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows. It is comforting to read it and find a word for a very specific feeling and feeling that someone has felt it just like you. Even when you thought you were all alone on it. Anyways. Hope you're doing well!
Just found your channel on my feed with this vid. Great job. I loved the delivery so much. I'm a huge fan of the haunted ps1 discs. I subbed and look forward to your future vids!
Thank you! I'm really glad you liked it!
A few of the TV lines are a reference to "the end of history" theory that the basic paradigms of modern capitalism are the peak of all possible human development, and society can only make progress by staying within that paradigm, because anything else is a step backwards at best. I am talking about this just because I remembered a stanza from a song that are both about the topic: For its the end of history Time's locked up and frozen still And there is no other pill to take So swallow the one that made you ill -- Rage Against the Machine, "Sleep Now in the Fire" The cycle the ending describes can't be broken by self-love. It's far too great to be ended by a handful of people escaping it. Thanks for the game rec.
Thank you for the information and interpretation, I am glad you picked up on a reference I didn't notice and commented it! I think this actually builds upon the angst present in the game, so I am glad you told me! I don't believe in this End of History theory personally nor in the idea of the cycle being unbreakable. I am positive those within Imperial Rome or Imperial China thought the same thing about their governmental structures. I don't believe we will become a utopia or anything nor that one day there will be no cycles ever. But there have been many such ideas and institutions throughout history that seemed unconquerable and even outright divinely appointed that were still cast down. And while humans still definitely do get caught within Cycles, and may always be within one, they can resist and change others still. I can understand feeling that way, believing in the End of History sometimes, but I think it is just defeatism personally and too focused on the now without consideration of how limited our way of thinking is in the now. To quote one of my favorite authors, "We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings." - Ursula K. Le Guin
your voice is hella relaxing youre so underrated
Thank you!!! I'm glad you think so!
Please move a little away from the microphone and project your voice evenly and clearly
I really enjoyed this video. I would never have known about this game or had the time to play it. I’m interested in the other endings and what you have to do to get them. The personal part about family hit home with me and I thank you for sharing. I really hope you make more vids like this
I definitely will make more videos like this! I also have some older videos on the channel, a mix of more personal essays and game reviews if you wanted to check them out! But regardless I'll be releasing another video soon. Hopefully in a week or two.
Some constructive feedback - hold your mic farther away from your mouth and speak up. It almost sounds like you're whispering at times due to the overly loud sibilants and plosives. You also speak with a lot of monotone vocal fry. It all gets a bit hard to listen to for extended periods. It sounds like you're talking very quietly and artificially increasing the volume. If so, don't do that lol. Speak from the diaphragm and try to develop a "voice", you shouldn't be speaking in your everyday conversational voice. The narration is really holding back the overall quality, kind of acting as a bottleneck of sorts. It may seem counterintuitive, but audio is a lot more important to a high-quality, professional feeling video than visuals are - that is to say, you can get away with bad visuals if you have good audio, but bad audio will be your undoing no matter how great your visuals are.
Love your analysis and narration! The light growl in your voice has had me distracted at work 😅 subing for sure
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Your narration is excellent and I'd never have caught wind of this game otherwise. Consider me excited for your future work :)
Thank you! I'm glad you liked the narration. I plan to have another video out soon!
Also- the Statue is not a statue, it's a man with concreate shoes on and their neck and arm horridly distended. Idk what has happened with their neck, but the arms seem to be holding to something above water, probably the pier that leads to the submarine. With that- their dialogue sounds like some form of coping, as if they are trying to explain that no no no someone didn't try to kill them, they tried to see what's under the sea
I really like this game, even tho I have even less memories of a console gaming as personally I have been a PC gamer through my entire life. And even tho having more talking options with characters would be cool, having not much to talk with the NPCs is on point with the story and vibe of the game- a world with no past, manufacture by a will outside of it, made just for the now and yet you are tasked with giving it future. The characters can't talk much in such world, because they themselves have just a dialogue for the now, no clear past they can draw on. Quite fitting in my opinion, tho it might sound also like defending a jank of a cult classic, even if fixing said jank didn't make things worse And kinda, without hiding the certain supprised pride- a fanart I did for this game landed as one of the steam trading cards. I'm quite honoured Bryce had chose it amongst works of other fans.
I agree, I think the limited dialogue absolutely does work with the game, I just personally would've preferred a bit more. Even if it was just vague rambling from them. But as it is, I think the game is very tightly made and everything works well with the story and theme. That is awesome!!! I looked through the cards a while ago and remember thinking the art on all them was amazing, which one in particular was yours?
god bless you for making this. 😭😭 i was debating on writing a script for my thoughts on this game since there isn’t a single video going over this game in detail up until now
@@snxffys6436 Haha. I felt the same way recently! Was gonna make a video on Webfishing and how it reminds me of old 2000s MMO social spaces and then someone went along and did it! Like literally the day after I had the idea. I hope you enjoyed my thoughts on it and think I did it justice!
There aren’t enough of these lower-key, atmospheric analysis videos here. I loved this!
Thank you! I'm glad you liked the tone and atmosphere, even if I make a few jokes and personal anecdotes in between the serious story parts! :D
Yeah the sequels imo do a better job of interrogating the necessity of these evil acts, would be cool to see your thoughts on them some day if you wanted!
@@arcaneScribbler I plan to! I wanted to take a break between games so my thoughts on the sequel aren't tied directly to having just played the first game + have a break with the mechanics and series so it feels fresh. If that makes sense!
@OurResidentEccentric makes total sense, yeah! I hope you enjoy them when you get to them!
You've got yourself a subscribe from me. Your quiet thoughtfulness is a deep balm.
@@arcaneScribbler I'm glad you feel so! That is very kind of you, genuinely. "Your quiet thoughtfulness is a deep balm", is very kind. It made me smile.
This is a game that I've always shared praises of and genuinely have considered one of my favorite games period. It's hard to explain it to people, but the endings and their messaging (even if some goofy) were things I experienced through trial and error at a time I frankly needed to. The raw delivery and word choice and imagery ... whenever your at a low point, even the most unexpected of things can hit you at the right time. There's an odd comfort in an abstract, uncanny world one hypothetically can escape to providing real and raw story either directly or indirectly. It's a game that I hold extremely dear to my heart and I think I always will. Thank you so much for creating this video! It has been so insightful and interesting to listen to another speak about a game I care so much for.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video and that the game also affected you too when you played it! I know how it feels when someone makes a video for a game you really care about. It can be very vindicating, (but also infuriating if they miss the point lol), but I'm happy you liked hearing my thoughts on it!
I rly hope u make more videos I just binged half of your channel after the Fatum Betula vid, I love how personal your videos feel and I love revisiting things/discovering things while listening to your interpretations and explanations, that's how every ''essays'' or ''long form videos'' should be (I hate these terms but u get me loll). Anyway, It's refreshing to have something pop on my feed that isn't just another recap of something I could just play or watch, thanks a bunch and keep it up, you're good!
Thank you! I appreciate everything you've said here. I am glad that you are enjoying my view on things! Including even if you have a different interpretation! That is art, and I strongly believe in making your own interpretations of them even if your views were not what was fully intended. I am just glad that some people like my own personal ramblings on art in-between the review/story parts. And I absolutely will keep making video essays as well as written ones and keeping up my personal ramblings lol.
I followed this game since the demo disc, seeing more people enjoy it is a treat. Based channel will subscribe.
Hell yeah!!! I remember it from the demo disc years ago but only ever got around to playing the full thing last year. So that's awesome that you have followed it so long!
Love how people are praising and supporting a up and coming RUclipsr in the essay commentary side of content. Love your vids man ❤️
Thank you! I'm glad you've enjoyed the videos. And yes, this is the best comment section of a video I've gotten so far! :D I'm really enjoying it.
Bought the game 5 minutes into the video. I'll come back to watch the rest once I've played! Love finding new games like this one. Thanks for making this video ❤
I'm glad, that is part of my goal in making videos like this, so it makes me super happy you bought it!!! When you finish please do return and tell me which of the endings/routes you liked the most!
A channel I've never heard of, with near an hour on a game I've never heard of, and the first 20 seconds show good editing and vocal performance? Oh hell yes, I know exactly what I'm doing for this next hour.
Thank you so much! I appreciate that. I hope you enjoy the video - and if you do I have a few other fairly long videos for you to check out too! My longest so far is one for Viking: Battle For Asgard at an hour and 40 minutes.
good video! hope you go far on this platform
Thank you! :D
This is a great video! Love your voiceover and thoughts on this game! I'd never heard of it before.
I'm glad you liked it and my voice!!! And similarly I'm glad I was able to show off the game to new people, it deserves more attention!
I just wanna say this is a great video and honestly this deserves more attention. Definitely gonna come back for more of your content man.
Thank you, I'm glad you liked it and are sticking around! :D
As someone who grew up having a ps1 as a kid, this genre has been a brilliant trip into how i think i remember feeling when i played them as a kid. Sure, the remakes and remasters can be a fun experience, having the games operate the way I feel like I remember it used to... great video
I get what you mean! That's how I feel about them as well. And even some recent CRPGs and strategy games. Where it hits all the right queues of feeling like a game you remember even if it isn't and is actually a lot more modern. And thank you, glad you enjoyed the video!
I have never even heard if this game but it looks really dope. The suburb portion was absolutely the most unnerving part to me because it felt so out of place but it still makes sense in this world. This was an awesome video! And for what it's worth, I thought your voice was basically perfect for it. Do you mind if I ask how you've listed a few tags in that separate section from the description? That seems useful and I never knew it was possible on here.
Yeah, I'm glad the suburb affected you too! It is nice to hear other people feel the same on it. And thanks as well for the kind words! And on the tags, funny enough I didn't know it was a feature either. I just listed the tags in the description with a # and then a few of them appeared above the description. It has also changed which of them are displayed nearly every hour for the first day the video was up. I think the way it works is it pulls whichever of the tags is most relevant to the video? Or maybe even which tags when applied to interested people got the most clicks? Or most popular? I'm sorry I don't know completely, but that would be my guess!
@OurResidentEccentric Thanks for letting me know! I've put em in the description before, I just never saw that happen as a result and thought it may be a new feature, lol. I subbed too, I can't get enough long essays about eerie content! And if it is stuff other than just that, I'll be around for that as well!
What an amazing essay! I never grew up with PS1 games, but the young dev did a fantastic job capturing the aesthetic and surreal horror. I can see him going places in the future and I can see you going as a video game essayist! Subbed and don't stop what you love doing
I appreciate that! I'll keep making essays and I don't see myself stopping anytime soon! I already wrote them for fun and did them for personal journaling, so I may as well keep at it! Especially when I get nice comments like this!
great video! great game! i genuinly felt chills once you mentioned the part about looking like your father and the game mentioning it. that kind of coincidence felt too purpouseful and ominous! cant wait to see more of your stuff in the future!
I'm glad you enjoyed it!!! I was unsure of how the more personal part of the video would be received, so I'm happy to see it resonated with you and that you enjoyed it!
@@OurResidentEccentric it was expertly added, felt like a real gut punch!
can you speak up just a lil bit? your voice is cute but it's hard to hear what you're saying sometimes. great video tho 😉
Thank you! In the future I'll try and speak up. I recorded this late at night and tried to be quiet to not wake anyone up, I had hoped I had boosted it enough. In the future I'll try and record during the day so I can be louder, or if in the case I have to record at night just make sure I boost it a bit more. I'm glad you enjoyed the video regardless!
personally gonna have to totally disagree... maybe turn up your volume?😂 audio is super well balanced between voiceover and bgm, i think they should stick with this overall volume level and tone of voice if they want to keep going with video essays
@mandovgc absolutely agree. Audio balance is great, and personally I like the little bit of gravel in his voice.
I had to turn on subtitles to understand some parts while other parts were fine. Boosting the volume while talking quietly can cause audio distortions that make some stuff difficult to understand, there were moments where their voice sounded like when horror games or movies have nonsensical whispering and I couldn't understand a word without replaying it several times with my ear closer to the speaker.
Aw, but I like the voice delivery how it is. But, some of the annunciation when the tone is low that needs emphasis. Audio balance is perfect.
This was great, I’ve been waiting for somebody to make a video like this about this game!! I 100%’d fatum betula, it’s one of my very favorites. Definitely earned a new subscriber (: good stuff
Thank you!!! I'm glad you liked it. When I first launched the game I actually didn't intend to make a video on it, but in just seeing the opening room's aesthetics I decided I should restart and start recording just in case I wanted to make a vid on it... And then went on to complete every ending and get every achievement in more or less one seating lol. It is a great game. Which would you say is your favorite ending/route of the game?
@ I liked the cycles and forever endings, those were really cool! The Ezekiel event thingy was actually so crazy I really enjoyed that as well
I’m really high but I’m loving this vid so far! You deserve more attention
Thank you so much! I appreciate it :D
I wish there will be a sequel on the ps5 (if it sticks to the franchise roots and not woke ofc)
Awww shit a banger incoming
Thank you so much for making this. The cycle ending is my favorite one as well. It's really touching to see someone connect with what I put into that ending and the areas surrounding it so strongly, and watching this video has helped me remember and reconnect with the love that I put into this game. Based on a lot of the thoughts you shared in this review, for whatever reason I feel the need to recommend Anodyne, Iketsuki, and the film True Stories if you haven't experienced them.
Thank you so much for making the game and commenting here! I am glad you liked the video + hearing my own personal ramblings on it! And thanks as well for the recommendations. I genuinely love getting them. I love the Talking Heads but have never seen True Stories! It absolutely looks up my alley. I'll also check out Anodyne, it does look interesting. I played Iketsuki around the time it came out, which was 2018/2019 I believe? But it has been a while now, I can't remember much about it aside from some visuals and liking it. So I absolutely should check it out again and see how it resonates with me now.
I personally prefer the Bone ending, where everyone becomes a skeleton.
Thank you for the in depth review!
