Doug MacKenzie's rendering of a Leo Kotke version of a composition by Richard Gilewitz makes for good listening. Brother Guy MacKenzie adds his quirky vision with a video that impacts both the music and the listener. Best to use headphones on this. (And keep the volume control handy)

One of my absolute all time favorite You Tube videos is one submitted by xj808 and judging by the fact that it has well over a half-million hits, I'm not the only one who favors this impeccable Horowitz performance. But one thing has bugged me about the video. The video and audio are considerably out of sync. With apologies to the originator of the video, I have corrected this as best as I coul...

Absolutely love this song but cant remember how to spell it. Luckily searched for the "outlawed pipes" and this popped into my playlist. Seek and ye shall find, lol. Serendipitous, by design 😮

Now, my dear brother, the chief architect of who I am today, has passed away. January 11, 1940 - September 20, 2024. Guy made this video for me, as a thank you for turning him on to the Davey Spillane piece he used for this video. Guy was truly an incredible man. A poet, philosopher, astronomer, photographer, pilot, aircraft mechanic, aviation school chief instructor, guitarist, songwriter, and performer. He was a dad, husband, brother, son, grandfather, and uncle. He will be with me, always.

I was about to write a thank you comment to the person who posted this video, but then I saw this comment. I am so sorry for your loss. I would like then to thank you both. This is a piece that I heard repeatedly in my childhood but was nameless to me. I spent some years looking for it with no success, so I sadly thought I would never hear it again. All I had were some fragments that I replayed by memory in my head from time to time. Somehow, after 20 years, life led me back to this song through this video. Thank you for turning this song to your brother, as it allowed me to find it and joy from it again. Thank you.

Benny Goodman does a great version of this in 1938. Look it up if you haven’t heard it. Only relation I have to Scotland is my 9th Great Grandparents came from Scotland, the Lockharts. I know my 16th Great grandfather is Allen Lockhart the 3rd, 1459-1513. They owned a castle that is today privately owned by a different family. I love ancestry.

A lament. This piece performed with so much expression by Spillane instantly evoked an image in my mind- of an old woman losing her last Son in war, alone and wailing in her empty home as she struggles to function with life's most basic, now grueling, chores. I see faded lyrics above as I write this long overdue message, suggesting my image may be "wrong," but I learned from this what a lament is to me- having never known the form before- and realizing it speaks (or should) to the core of us all, as we ride the sometimes painful waves of life. Just incredible.
