hi! i just stumbled upon these videos and i find them really interesting! i’m a big john lennon fan and the whole situation around his death and this book really turned me off of it because i just had a hard time separating the book from his death but the more i hear in your videos about salinger’s life, the more i feel capable of separating it and the more i actually want to read it! side note: you remind me of an english teacher i had that i just loved and i’m glad that your students have you (:

Limbo is hell as well... But you can always go back to the tryth, the way and the life and esxape it. Its really horrible... Uuuuuhhh... But you can always change the road and seek God and foregivness and wonderful things happens. Its a miracle and you sound like a indoctrinated Hehova but you really dont have to figure outthings by yourself. Laying your life in the hands... Its sounds so crazy for me but its a miracle when you try to live in Universe instead of fighting it... Trying to defeat your universe abd make it obey you? and you doomed

Fascinating analysis. You are the first one to mention that there was a strong element of premeditation to Ugolino's actions in the jail cell. I'm of the mind that he's in this ninth circle because he betrayed both his country/nation-state and his kin. From the bits I've read, Ruggieri "invited" Ugolino to "dinner" with the specific purpose of betraying him. Ugolino probably thought that bringing his kids/grandkids with him would "protect" him from being betrayed. Ruggieri's act reflects the subsequent sinners who "invited" family to "dinner" - and had them slaughtered after a code word was spoken. What do you think?

Given the nature of politics, specifically Italian politics at this time, your description is highly probable and just seedy enough for Dante to want to include for his eager audience.

Thank you very much for this lecture.. A wonderful detailed recap and you have a very pleasent voice.. Some years ago I read the divine comedy, but what got me here was Rodin's sculptures (especially "gates of hell") and been looking into Hieronymus Bosch, Rodin, Carpeaux artwork, where I quickly concluded that most of there works are Dante's Divine Comedy inspired.. So its such a treat to get a really lovely indepthly analysis of brief moments from Dantes work that was replicated in art.. Anyway just wanted to thank you. :)

Hey Deven. Rollo May was a psychologist. He seems to be taking a look at how comfortable we can become with our environment even when that environment is oppressive. He does this by looking at two men who are, in a sense, caged by their circumstances.

Thanks for watching our videos. The term is a legal one which Judge Taylor uses to dismiss a court case between two families: the "Cunninghams" and the "Coninghams". The judge is saying the two families connived or are working together to make money. It's a humorous part in the book mostly because it shows Scout's voracious appetite for learning and reveals Judge Taylor as a man who doesn't like his time wasted and is not one easily fooled. The difference in spellings is irrelevant since after all theses years the families have intermarried. It demonstrates how a small and really unimportant detail can be taken way too literally. Wisdom demands discernment so you don't miss the forest for the trees.
