Radio controlled Land Yacht crashes in blustery conditions
Просмотров 612 месяца назад
Testing one of my big sails in gusty conditions, weather forcast was for 35-38-kph winds, it is a bit sheltered here but some big gusts though. The sail had to be let out about half way or more most of the time to prevent tipping over. Watch all the way through some good spins towards the rear of the short video.

RC Land Yachts NZ on my set course, NOTE: wind speed in top left as well as mtrs of wind past (average) 5 Min runs with efficiency listed at end of vid. NOTE: efficiency is higher in lighter winds with this sail.
RC Land Yachts NZ Testing motor driven one

Interesting doing this as I have always wanted to get 30 laps, using the wind. It might be a big ask as using the motor I can get 31 laps (this one was 29) but adhesion may be the issue as I can get 27 just using the wind, so conditions would have to be absolutely perfect.
RC Land Yachts NZ 18. 75 laps

Testing sails for efficiency. 1.5 is good but 2.5 not uncommon and have had over 3.5 in light winds with big sail. Hoping to get 30 laps in 5 mins , sometime.

My setup to show wind direction, On the LCD screen: top Left Wind that has passed in 5 mins from the start of the run,( this lets me work out the effiency of the sails and the yachts by dividing the mtrs of wind to the mtrs the yacht has traveled in the 5 min run.) Bottom Left :Average Wind speed in Mtrs /Sec, since start of run, and Bottom Right: time is seconds. It aslo has a buzzer countdown...

is so cool to see
🙂👌🏻
such a weird motorsport, really love the simplicity!
Yes is is one of the most affordable MotorSports in the world.
Did you make these land yachts or where did you buy them?
I make them myself, 3D printed with Carbon fibre reinforcements also the masts and booms are C/F Tube.
Nice land yachts Where could I buy one ?
What are you.... like 5 years old?? Get a job!!
Jess does very well with the Land Yachts and is good with any RC stuff.
Looks good, must be a light yacht to move so well in that wind. Mine likes around 10- 20kph + to perform well,- made for stronger winds.
Yes the heaviest one is 880 Grams and the lightest is 670. The light one with the 1.6mtr sail will go in winds less than 0.5m/s . I do have sails for heavier winds. The fastest I have been is 34 kph, Cheers Sid
@@helis9019 34kph is moving, - my yacht is 1.2m long and 2.3kg, and the fastest it's been is only 28kph. Can't get a decent run anywhere, as both places I run have very swirly intermittent gusts which is not much use. Found what might have been a good place on a closed straight road in an open area in a new subdivision, but it's covered with goose crap and stones. I have material for a new sail with a shorter foot and longer luff, but haven't had time to make one up yet.
@@jrbaeronz9840 My yachts are 610 wide and 650mm wheelbase. The heaviest 3d printed one is 1190gms complete ready to go and the lightest (printed with LW PLA , which I print my gliders in) is 690gms with a 1640mm high cellophane sail which is very good in light winds. I do have very basic lighter ones made from p but the same size. I try to make the sails as ligt as possable to keep the CG lower. Most of my use is on part of my drive on a set course,(apart from tacking) which is 35mts per lap. When I did 34 kph it was on a new subdivision close by and it was just a one off run of about 100mtrs. I'm retired , so fortunate I have the area to test and make things.
Note, these were not good conditions, The wind meter measures the average wind speed over 5 mins It was 4.09 KPH but with some high gusts. 441mtrs on wind pasted during the 5 min run and the yacht traveled a distance of 420 mtrs, this equates to 0.952 Mtrs Traveled per mtr of wind. In very good conditions I can get 3 but most times it between 1,5 and 2.5.
Very little wind today, but with some gusts, all the buildings around don't help.
NOTE The white one has a smaller sail for use in higher winds, the wind is too light during this video to put it to it's full potential.
One of my land yachts. Note the wind speed and direction indicator in the middle of the drive. It is connected to a Arduino to record wind speed and how many MTRS of wind in 5minutes. So I count the laps and enter in onto a spread sheet to get an indication of the efficiency of the sails and yachts.
Where did you buy the parts for it
Where did you buy that one ? It looks great !!!
similar problem
All sorted now. Bangood send me a new pair.
After a couple of days , still trying to sort it out with Bangood, they are generally very good.
