The beginning is busy, but the build up and drop are pretty dope.

I’ve gone to play at some house party type thing and I would read the room and kinda just not want to play. And I would just disappear. Other times I was invited to play an outdoor party and there is no organization and a bunch of dudes who love themselves and just decide they are playing next. And they play boring music, and it’s 3 am and finally somebody is like, nope this persons turn!

"a compressor can do that, but then you'd have to compress, overcompression is a disease, don't do it". this is bad reasoning to switch to volume automation. using a sidechain compressor for ducking doesn't cause "compression". or at least it doesn't cause the kind of effect the mantra "overcompression is a disease" would refer to. that mantra refers to the unstable, worbling, pumping effect that may occur when a signal peaks high into a compressor/limiter (or many), and it squashes the sound to the point it kills desirable transparency via undesirable rising and falling levels over time. especially bad if this rising and falling is unpredictable & unmusical. compare that to a kick drum triggering the SC bus's compressor once per bar... it doesn't cause "overcompression". it just applies a certain volume envelope determined by the SC source sound and the compressor settings. traditional sidechaining itself is unrelated to a mix's excessive compression, which I'm understanding you to be implying it is. but sure, it's possible to do sidechaining badly. for example if you use the direct signal from a long-tailed & boomy kick... in that case you may get a really unclean ducking effect from the compressor. maybe that effect is what you have in mind when you're advising against using a compressor. if that's what you're talking about, then more educative content would be to explain how to avoid bad traditional sidechain. for example, it could be solved using the classic ghost kick trick (tiny ~1ms white noise blip as SC source, or any short sound), which allows the curve to be totally defined by the compressor's params. I'm not arguing for using compressors for sidechain. I'm a big midi triggered volume automation guy. I just think that, with respect, this was a poor explanation of the concept, not great reasoning, and at worst it could cause a beginner to avoid using a valid production tool. I'm thinking we can be more careful with words and do a better job educating, especially if we're trying to get people to sub to our patreon. thanks for coming to my ted talk.
