The first three have their own continuity, but the series sort of decided to do different things each series with the exception of the Rescue Police Trilogy and the B-Fighter duology. The girls of the Space Sheriff Trilogy are the assistants for the Space Sheriffs, we would not see a female Metal Hero until Speilban and even then they were rare. Metalder was a reimagined Kikaider, but it didn’t last long and was cancelled because its story lost viewers. Jiban and Janperson were both inspired by RoboCop. The kiddie shows at the last two seasons are what killed Metal Heroes along with Kamen Rider’s return to television as Toei didn’t want a third wheel, especially since they didn’t have the money after the economic bubble of the ‘80s burst.

According to the man himself when he was at the Japan World Heroes convention I attended, Metal Heroes was the start of Tsuyoshi Nonaka’s mechanical design career with Bandai having seen his art for a magazine talking about the then airing third season of Transformers. He was partially inspired by the late 1980s art of Syd Mead, the futurist who conceived the look of Blade Runner and Turn A Gundam among other things. His later designs for things such as weapons had the philosophy of “Do not touch”, where he would be inspired by items that children would not be allowed to play with by adults and give them a sense of feeling more grown up. Examples from this series would be the Input Magnum from B-Fighter aka Beetleborgs, which he conceived from a TV remote’s buttons for the input codes to activate the gun’s different beams and gadgets. Another example he gave was car themed items from Sentai such as the the Mantan Gun sidearm from Go-Onger/RPM which was modeled from a gas pump.

Lastly The genealogy of Super Sentai is: Ogon Bat: Japan’s first Superhero, predates Superman by a few years. King Kong: a young Eiji Tsuburaya saw this movie and felt inspired, wanting to make his own monster movie someday as a filmmaker. *Tetsujin-28*: The first Giant Robot hero of modern Japanese popular fiction. *Astro Boy*: Shotaro Ishinomori was hired by Osamu Tezuka as an assistant which started his professional career full time. Godzilla: The King and the founding pillar of Tokusatsu as a whole. Gekko Kamen: the ancestor of all Toku Superheroes on Television, a masked vigilante who debuted in the late ‘50s. *Cyborg 009*: Ishinomori’s first big hit in the manga world and the prototype of his superhero templates. Ultraman: The pioneer of “Suitmation” on television and the first mega hit/lasting pop culture icon. Other networks wanted to get a piece of the action, so they scrambled to try and make shows that could tussle with the big guy in the ratings. *Skull Man*: a dark vengeful anti-hero from a manga, was the one of original pitches for a TV show character by Ishinomori but was rejected by the Network. Shotaro’s son saw a drawing of his father’s ideas for a redesign and he liked the one of a grasshopper themed biker best so that led to… *Kamen Rider*: The birth of the Henshin Hero boom of the ‘70s. *Mazinger Z*: the first piloted hero robot of Japanese pop culture, created by the former assistant of Shotaro Ishinomori, Go Nagai. Gatchaman Tatsunoko’s second big hit after Mach Go Go aka Speed Racer, established superhero team concepts further among other things because of Mr. Soda among other writers as well as the creation of the wrist changer device. *Getter Robo*: Go Nagai innovates Super Robots again with Ken Ishikawa, making a combiner Robot that has multiple pilots rather than just one and alternate battle modes based on how the robot components combine. Marvel Comics : without Gene Pelc being sent to Japan to one up DC by Stan Lee and his other bosses, Japanese Spider-Man would never have been made nor Battle Fever J and Super Robots would have remained mostly animated because JAKQ was cancelled. Star Wars : George Lucas made a ripple effect on sci-fi going forward that would spread across the globe, Japan especially as they loved the original trilogy. Super Sentai especially got the Star Wars fever with entries like Flashman. *Metal Heroes*: Shozo Uehara, one of the hard working screenwriters of toku dating back to the original Ultraman and a writer for Gorenger, pitched the idea of a series about a space cop and that led to Gavan and an entire third franchise holding down the fort of Kamen Rider’s timeslot as that show didn’t stay on the air throughout the ‘80s. Considered part of Super Sentai’s universe or rather Dekaranger’s universe since Gavan and the Space Sheriffs are part of the Galactic Union Police force. *Saban*: One fateful day, around 1984ish, a businessman named Haim Saban was bored on a business trip to Japan and stumbled upon Bioman while flipping through channels in his hotel room. He loved it and wanted to bring it back to America… *Sailor Moon*: While making a sequel to Sailor V, Naoko Takeuchi originally wanted to make her Sailor Mercury based on Joe Shimamura aka Cyborg 009 but her publisher advised against this idea because Ishinomori would sue. She settled on a “Sentai for girls” concept and that exploded in popularity, creating a sub genre of magical girls that are distant cousins to Super Sentai, especially if Toei is the one making them. Jurassic Park Dinosaurs ruled the box office with many media companies trying to cash in. *Power Rangers*: Mr. Saban tried for many years to get Super Sentai Americanized, but the networks scoffed at his idea. Fate was finally kind to him as Margaret Loesch, head of Fox Kids programming and former head of Marvel Productions recognized the show as Stan Lee tried to do the same thing Saban was doing back in the 1980s when they were partners with Toei and she was in charge of that failed pitch. She decided to go from Bioman to Zyuranger because of the age of Bioman’s footage not being up to modern standards and despite Fox doubting her, it created a mega hit that dominated Saturday morning for the remainder of the 1990s. *Pretty Cure*: The spiritual successor to Sailor Moon in terms of popularity and carrying the toku adjacent tropes it had. Writers and producers are from Kamen Rider and Super Sentai and they have even crossed over with Super Sentai on rare occasions in two audio dramas and at the end of a movie. Fans consider it unofficially the third member of the Super Hero Time Sunday kids TV block since all three are made by Toei and have had staying power by running alongside each other for 20 years now.

Gatchaman is a more interesting case, it definitely inspired some of the core concepts of Super Sentai and is its predecessor by 3 years. Additionally one of its writers, Hirohisa Soda, became the head writer of Super Sentai in the 1980s until 1990 when Fiveman bombed from his creative burnout. Mecha designer legend Katsushi Murakami worked on both shows, and kept his tenure until the mid 1990s, having his fellow designer/fan/student Tsuyoshi Nonaka take over his position slowly starting with Zyuranger.

Voltron is like Sailor Moon, both were derived from the tropes of Super Sentai making them “toku adjacent media” as the kids call it. In the case of Voltron aka Go Lion, it came about after Super Sentai but it and an unrelated show called Daltanious that came before it experimented with shaking up the formula of super robots by incorporating animal themes into the bots, something that Super Sentai would do later and make part of its brand with Liveman 7 years later in 1988.
