    Strong disagree with your take on draw engines. Glarb pairs wonderfully with traditional draw engines. For any key spell below 4cmc having more draw effects means you can get that card to hand and then play the next card (force of will) off the top deck. If your goal is to maximize Glarb draw engines are key. Nothing worse than having your answer on your top deck with no way to get it to hand.

    • @SurfCityTCG
      @SurfCityTCG 2 дня назад

      @@user-ck1lq2tu3g Fair point, but this assumes you can draw at will. Many of the best draw engines don't allow this, and therefore leave you in the same predicament - see Rhystic Study, Mystic Remora, Phyrexian Arena, Pollywog Prodigy, Talion, Black Market Connections, Consecrated Sphinx, and numerous others. Glarb's surveil ability also helps a lot with this, further minimizing the impact of dead cards on top. We also run 10 fetch lands that can be "banked" to save their shuffle effect for when needed. Since we're often rushing out Urborg and/or Yavimaya, we can use those effects to tap the fetch lands for mana until a point where we need to shuffle, thereby seeing a new card on top of library every time. You raise a good point, though, and this definitely warrants additional discussion. I actually plan to post an updated deck guide soon, and I will definitely address your point and these considerations when I do. Thank you for the insightful comment!

    Have you considered playing any blinkmoth nexus type cheap manlands to copy with Satya? I'm not sure how well that fits the aggressive snowball gameplan, but it seemed like a cool option to have some goofy ramp / targets post board wipe

    • @SurfCityTCG
      @SurfCityTCG 3 дня назад

      I had NOT considered this, but what a fascinating and clever idea! I'm impressed with your ingenuity. I don't know if I would want to run Mutavault/Inkmoth/Blinkmoth Nexus because I place a strong emphasis on avoiding colorless lands as much possible in 3+ color decks, but it might be worth a try. I really like the idea. I'm not sure if I would typically find time to do it, though. Most games I have higher priority targets to copy.

Tons of different ways to make it, but I like this build, focusing on playing 4+ mana cards off the top. The flash enabling to clear the top if an excellent touch! Sweet deck, I was strongly considering making Satya and mostly using it as a blink commander / keep some powerful 2 drops and not really leaning much into the energy synergy. Playing all the energy cards does look pretty strong and fun though! Probably more interesting than playing an american good stuff etb deck.

    Mirko is my pet deck, and I love that there's a creator who's made so much content surrounding him! It's always so wild to me that in these games, no one tries to dig for removal as Mirko gets dangerously tall. In my playgroup, Mirko is often archenemy, and they try to blow him up asap. Perhaps the product of playing on Spelltable and Mirko being a less popular commander?

    • @SurfCityTCG
      @SurfCityTCG 9 дней назад

      @@iNtoxic_oNe I know - definitely a disappointing game. If I could find ANY of my draw engine or burst draw cards, I think I could've won, but alas.... Re: Vraska, the Silencer - definitely! She's very similar to Shelob, but doesn't force you to rely on fight/bite spells for removal. I actually considered adding her to this deck, but ultimately decided against it. The only thing is you would need a separate win condition, as the tokens themselves are not enough to get you there reliably. Shelob is a giant beater, so the win is already available via commander damage, but Vraska would need something else. Good luck!

    Horizon of progress is so insane, I feel like everyone should just play it every single deck including single colours. I'd need such a good reason to not play it in every deck. I'm sure you've spoken about them plenty on your channel, but what do you think of the surveil lands? I also generally really despise non mdfc taplands, but have been generally very impressed with the surveil lands overall from playing with them. Maybe that's just because I generally play Falco spara, and fetch -> surveil is such a nice way to unbrick my top card

    • @SurfCityTCG
      @SurfCityTCG 18 дней назад

      As the proud owner of 15 copies of Horizon of Progress (all bought for non-speculative, personal use), I completely agree! It's the first land I add in literally every new deck I make. I love it so much. I always want to play Terrain Generator, but rarely find room for it; I was so happy when this card was spoiled. I love the surveil lands! I should have mentioned them when I was talking about tapped lands. I do consider them to be one of the few exceptions to my general disdain for lands that come into play tapped. They are so powerful and the effect is definitely worth it. I love being able to keep sketchy hands that include a fetch land, knowing that I'll get to see one card deeper. I run them in pretty much every deck I play.

    There is a difference between a Group Hug and a Group Hug built RIGHT. When a group hug is built right, you CHOOSE to whom, when and where you distribute resources, always having an end game. A built-right group hug is one of the most fun decks a playgroup can hope for. Also, I most definetely had a Benevolent Offering in my hand ready to cast it at the beginning of my upkeep, so killing me with combat dmg before my turn came was indeed the right option. :)

    • @SurfCityTCG
      @SurfCityTCG 23 дня назад

      Absolutely! I think group hug, as an archetype, is one of the HARDEST to build correctly, much less play! It demands that you have a keen sense of politics and be able to navigate the complexities of the interpersonal interactions that are critical to a game of commander. It's not an archetype that I would recommend to anyone except the very best social players.

    So if you copy hideous taskmaster with ulalek, you get to gain control of 4 creatures from each opponent? because the spell is copied, and then the ability is copied for each taskmaster. what would happen if echoes of eternity was out on the board too?

    • @SurfCityTCG
      @SurfCityTCG 26 дней назад

      No - you'll just get two of each. Ulalek copies the spell and the cast trigger, but since it is a CAST trigger and not an ETB, the additional Taskmaster that you copy won't create an extra one of his effects. If Echoes of Eternity is on the board, here's what would happen: 1. You cast Hideous Taskmaster. This triggers the following: A. Its own cast trigger (steal creatures). B. Echoes of Eternity, causing the cast trigger to happen again. C. Echoes of Eternity, copying the Taskmaster spell on the stack. D. Ulalek's trigger, allowing you to copy everything on the stack. E. Echoes of Eternity, causing Ulalek's trigger to happen again. At this point, you'll have the opportunity to pay 2 mana for effect E. If you do, A, B, C, and D will all be copied. This creates an infinite that allows you to continuously pump 2 mana into Ulalek's trigger to copy the stack as many times as you want (presuming you have 2 mana to spend each time). If you only have 2 mana to pay for ability E one time, you'll end up with the following once the stack resolves: * steal up to 4x creatures from each opponent * 1 original Hideous Taskmaster (card) and 3 Hideous Taskmaster (tokens) Pretty nutty!

    • @tommieboi707
      @tommieboi707 День назад

      @@SurfCityTCGquestion. What happens if somebody counters the original task master while it is on the stack? Which trigger or copy resolves from this stack?

    • @SurfCityTCG
      @SurfCityTCG 22 часа назад

      @@tommieboi707 countering one Taskmaster (spell) will only stop that single card from resolving. If they time it right (before Ulalek trigger resolves - which they would do naturally), then it will also stop one of the Taskmaster (spell) copies since the original was countered. TL;DR - everything would be the same except you would only end up with two Hideous Taskmaster creatures (both token copies) once the stack resolves. You'd still steal 4 creatures (assuming you only paid 2 to copy the stack once).

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by a lands/surveil deck, but I think Glarb is quite good regardless of how you build him, as he is just a sick value engine in the command zone. He's definitely a great candidate for a budget deck! I might even change mine into that. • @SurfCityTCG
      @SurfCityTCG 26 дней назад

      This is probably the most confusing part, so no worries! You need to back up a bit farther. Start at 1:28:25. * Opponent has Sower of Discord targeting me and him, so I can't attack him or I'll also die (note: this is actually wrong - as the trigger would go on the stack to kill me, but he would die first so the trigger would never happen, but I didn't realize this in the game). * I activate Eye of Ugin to try to find removal, but end up settling for Breaker of Creation so I can gain enough life to survive the attack. * I cast (holding priority) Urza's Incubator (UI), which triggers Skittering Cicada (SC) and Forsaken Monument (FM). * With UI, SC, and FM all on the stack, I tap The One Ring (TOR), still holding priority and continue to respond (so none of this is resolving - all are still on the stack). * I respond to all of this by flashing (Skittering Cicada gives my colorless spells flash) in Breaker of Creation (mistakenly reducing its cost by 2 from UI, which is not technically in play yet, so it doesn't reduce anything since it is still on the stack). * This is now around the time stamp you stated (1:30:13). * Casting the Breaker of Creation triggers Ulalek (and technically should have also triggered FM & SC, but I missed this), so I pay 2 to copy all spells and abilities I control. At this point, the stack looks like this (1 is the top of the stack; 6 is the bottom): 1. Ulalek trigger. 2. Breaker of Creation trigger. 2b. SC & FM triggers that I forgot. 3. Breaker of Creation (spell). 4. TOR activation. 5. SC & FM triggers from casting UI. 6. Urza's Incubator (spell). So all of these will get copied. Does that help? I would recommend you watch my *_ULALEK DECK GUIDE & PRIMER_* (ruclips.net/video/V9XIvxbhZ2Y/видео.html), in which I explain how this all works in detail. Thanks for the question! Let me know if you have any other follow-ups. Always happy to answer questions.

    Indestructibility on a PW does nothing else than prevent any destroy effect. It does not prevent them from taking combat dmg through attaking them and it does not prevent them from getting sacced when reaching 0 loyalty. That said, I really like Season of the Burrow. Versatile spot removal(s)+Reanimation with indestructibility can get you far, even at sorcery speed. It is obviously even better if you run a commander with 3 or less cmc. Quite possibly my favorite of the cycle (black is the most powerful but also kinda meh because most times it will be a "1-spell kill")

    Great guide! The walkthrough of the inclusions and the mulligan practice was very helpful. Not sure if you addressed this already, but when do you feel comfortable flipping sorin into a planeswalker? Since he has extort on both sides, you could just extort in your post-combat main phase as to not trigger his flip and keep him protected. What sorts of threats are you looking at removing in the midgame? Do you think its worth it to -1 him to slow someone else down who maybe has an engine commander/creature or are you looking more to use it for your own defense to keep your board state safe against scarier creatures?

    • @SurfCityTCG
      @SurfCityTCG Месяц назад

      Thank you so much! I'm glad you found it helpful and I appreciate your comment! I typically try to avoid flipping him until I need to use his -1 as removal, or until I'm ready to -1 to hit someone's face to start moving toward a win. As you mentioned, both sides have extort, so there's nothing terribly wrong about having him on the planeswalker side except that he is far more vulnerable to stray attacks. You make a great point in that you can wait until your second main phase to extort to avoid flipping. I do this fairly often. I definitely think it's worth using the planeswalker side's -1 ability to take out key threats. It's really context dependent in terms of what to target, so I'm not sure how to explain, but if you provide some scenarios, I can weigh in on my opinion about what creature might be the most existentially threatening. You could always just ask the table what they think might be the best target. Even if you don't agree, it can often be worth it to just get a couple of people on your side.

      @joereinhard Месяц назад

      @@SurfCityTCG Unfortunately I haven't gotten many reps in. During goldfishing it has helped speed Eris out, which may not always be desirable when you want a lower threat level, but having the option is nice. The general utility of the flashback package makes it seem worth it for me, though. You can have card selection (Faithless Looting, Deep Analysis, Otherworldly Gaze), removal (Visions of Duplicity, Visions of Ruin), and win-cons (Isengard Unleashed, Seize the Day). These cards are fine when you draw them on their own, and you don't mind wheeling them away when they're not needed. One caveat is I play at a slightly lower power level, so it's possible the package doesn't make the cut for your build. By including it you're trading some raw power for additional synergy/utility; in my build each flashback card could probably be swapped for a "more powerful" instant/sorcery. Trading Isengard Unleashed or Seize the Day for Savage Beating, for instance.

      @tumultuoustempus Месяц назад

      @@joereinhard Interesting. I do tend to like "toolbox" type cards, as I think they provide a lot of bonus value in terms of options and flexibility. As you noted, speeding Eris out is usually not the ideal way to play him. This is something I discovered after playing the deck numerous times. I initially built it with a strong emphasis on getting 4x different mana values in the graveyard ASAP, but I've found that to be less and less relevant. Now, I play it as a slow-build control/midrange deck, usually focusing on building resources/ramping before starting to progress my own board. I often try to board wipe before playing Eris for the first time.

    hey, been looking at necrobloom decks for the past week, and this one if by far my favourite, seems grindy and sturdy. Just curious about four of the cards, hows ripple of the undeath, seedborn muse, open the way and awaken the woods looking so far? Thanks in advance, also a plus for the bling going on, its we got the same car but you have all the extras :D

    • @SurfCityTCG
      @SurfCityTCG Месяц назад

      Thank you! I'm glad you like it. I have several other games posted here, so check those out too! *Ripples of Undeath* - phenomenal! It has played out SO well, not just in this deck. I think it's close to an auto-include in nearly every black deck. It feels very similar to Sylvan Library. It's probably not quite as good, but it's shockingly close, and if you care about getting cards into the graveyard, it can be even better. You should typically always pay the 1 mana + 3 life, even if you don't really need any of the 3 cards you milled. There are some exceptions, of course, but I would default to this behavior. I can almost guarantee that, just like with Sylvan Library, far more players are losing games due to not paying enough life (losing card advantage) vs. paying too much life and dying for that reason. *Seedborn Muse* - Works super well for the way I like to play this deck (I often tutor / prioritize finding Emergence Zone), but I would say that is a very advanced play style, so if you're still learning the deck, I think you could cut this, but I personally wouldn't. Seedborn with Emergence Zone + Amulet of Vigor / Spelunking + Aftermath Analyst allows you to basically take a full turn on every player's turn. It's not always going to be the ideal card, so don't be afraid to surveil it to the graveyard or shuffle it away if you see it on top of your deck. It's a high pick when it comes to considerable targets for Green Sun's Zenith, Chord of Calling, etc. *Open the Way* - I'm a massive fan of this card. I bought ~50 copies at release because I *knew* it was being criminally undervalued. It's such a low-key way to put yourself so far ahead in a game without drawing a ton of attention (though that is becoming less and less true). That all being said, it does leave you very vulnerable the turn you cast it. Six mana is a lot to spend for a setup turn, especially in a power level 8 game. I wouldn't cut it, but I don't think it is uncuttable, if that makes sense. In terms of value for cost, there are few better cards in this deck (or in the game, in my opinion). Try losing a game where you resolve an Open the Way for 4 in ANY deck, let alone this one (assuming you don't die immediately before untapping again). It's especially powerful given that our gameplan involves eventually getting Cabal Coffers + Urborg in play. Not only does this have a chance to find one of those pieces (or an Urza's Cave), but it makes them stronger once you do have them, as you have 4 more lands than you would have had, which super-charges the Coffers. *Awaken the Woods* - similar to Open the Way in some regards. Obviously it's far more vulnerable, as the Dryad Arbor tokens it makes can die to a board wipe, but it has higher upside, as each token you create triggers landfall. I will typically try to flash this out via Emergence Zone, or hold it until I have a Gaea's Cradle (not currently running it, but I may add it back), Concordant Crossroads, or Lotus Cobra / Nissa, Resurgent Animist. On more than one occasion, I've cast this with Lotus Cobra + Nissa (or either one + Ancient Greenwarden) to essentially double my mana. For example, Awaken for X=6 with two Lotus Cobra effects in play will generate 12 mana for 8 spent, netting you +4 mana. I'm not running it currently (though I might change this soon), but it's phenomenal with Tireless Provisioner. I will say that I am quite impressed with the cards you called out, as they are near the top of my list of ones I could see myself cutting in the future (exception of Ripples of Undeath), so it's clear to me you have a very solid understanding of the deck. Thanks again for the comment!

    • @salyir8386
      @salyir8386 18 дней назад

      I think what most people are referring to is after you get and pay for one ulalek trigger cast something like Eldritch immunity at instant speed to get another ulalek trigger, paying the additional 2 and copying the whole stack including everything that you copied off the first ulalek trigger. You can also go sorta infinite by responding to the ulalek trigger instead which can copy the ulalek trigger. This can be very strong if you have "on cast" triggers on the table. This card can be confusing and I'm considering abandoning it as a commander to make games more fun and not have 20 minute turns resolving your own triggers.

    • @DarthCool99
      @DarthCool99 8 дней назад

      @@salyir8386 It's such a cool card, and it forces high level interaction with the game rules themselves, but you're exactly right; it's a bit much to resolve 20 minute turns of copies of copies of stacks of triggers. Hey, I like your deck, thats mostly why I watched :) That Eldrazi player was hard to watch, but w/e. I have some minor corrections for you, if you don't mind: You misplayed When you used your Thunderclap Drake to copy your Volcanic Salvo, you need to sacrifice the Drake first since it copies the next spell you cast, not a spell already on the stack. Volcanic Salvo can't deal 12 damage to a single target, you either choose zero, one or two targets and each of them is dealt 6 damage. And probaply most important, Shadow of the Second Sun triggers (Untaps, upkeeps and draws your card) right after combat on your turn, at the beginning of your second main phase, not at the end of your turn. I don't know what cards where in your hand, but it's obviously important for sorcery speed spells. I don't mean to be rude or criticise you, but you seemed to be very interested in having a clean game rules wise (even if that goal wasn't necessarily shared by every player) and these where some mistakes I spotted.

      Hi! Thank you for the comment. I appreciate the feedback, both positive and critical! 1. Good catch on the Thunderclap Drake! That was my first time ever activating it, so thanks for teaching me. 2. Good point on the Salvo. I was trying really hard not to be on full tilt at that point in the game, so forgive the multiple mistakes :D 3. I think you're not correct on Shadow of the Second Sun. Your extra beginning step happens at the end of your second main phase. Here's how the card reads: "At the beginning of enchanted player's postcombat main phase, there is an additional beginning phase after this phase." The last 3 words are the critical part. So what happens is: 1. Finish combat; 2. Begin your second main phase; 3. At the beginning of your second main phase, Shadow triggers and creates an additional beginning phase that will happen "after this phase." You can verify this by looking at the rulings on Gatherer. It is a very confusingly worded card! Thanks again for the comment. I'm glad you like the deck and I hope you keep watching! I'm hoping to post a full deck guide for this deck soon.

    Wow. What a great guide! I particularly like the example mulligans. It was fun to watch! Do you flipp Jace? Edit: you need to flipp him. It’s Not a may.. Sadly

      Thanks for the feedback! I'm glad the mulligan practice was helpful - I'll continue to do that in future videos. Do I flip Jace? Well it really depends on the game. It's not a may, so you really don't have a choice (if you activate him), but obviously you don't HAVE to activate him. I usually try to wait until I'm sure I can get at least some value out of it. Depending on how far into the game it is, or how imminent your death is, you might not have a choice. Alternatively, if it's seemingly like it's going to be a long, grindy game, you might be better off waiting to activate him (or even holding him in your hand) until you're ready to use him the following turn. I usually wait to flip him until I'm ready to cast a Living Death or something impactful, but sometimes you just need to flip him and flash back a random value/removal spell. You could also flip and just plus him, but the plus ability is usually pretty negligible, so I try to avoid that line of play in most situations. Sometimes I'll just have him sit there and never use him unless someone tries to remove him or plays a board wipe, at which point I'll flip him in response and he'll live (assuming the board wipe doesn't also hit planeswalkers). Hope that helps!
