Rehydrating a tardigrade back to life!
When faced with extreme conditions, like drought, tardigrades enter a "tun state" in which they lose all of the water in their bodies and reduce their metabolism considerably. They remain in suspended animation until conditions are just right again!

A Very Flat Flatworm (and Hitchhikers)

A planarian with many eyespots covered in ciliates along for the ride (Trichodina)!
Hydra and Friends
Просмотров 106День назад
Hydras and a couple of their ciliated hitchhikers, Trichodina (the hairy round one) and Kerona (the hairy bean-shaped one). Both ciliates can live on the surface of Hydra, feeding on the organic matter around them without harming the host. What I find fascinating is that they do not trigger the Hydra's nematocysts (stinging structures found in the tentacles to stun prey)! I also noticed some am...

Ciliate (Holophyra) having a large meal

I had a crushed copepod on my slide, and it turned out to be this holophyrid's lucky day as it consumed all of the organic material spilling from it. It ate so much, I thought it would pop!

Thecamoeba movement

Timelapse of a Thecamoeba I found from a local pond, shot with a 20x objective! They have distinctive wrinkles on the upper cell membrane which thicken when they are in motion.

At what magnification is this?
@@MattMarcio This is with the 20x objective 👍
@@germjury171 Thank you !
That's the fastest self-healing I've ever seen. Initially it seemed like, okay, this little guy's losing its guts, it's dead Jim. 43 seconds later it moves on like nothing happened. Looks like one of those fast contractions at the start was a bit too violent.
Iv never seen a cell interact with physical objects like that before
Im surprised a membrane rupture is certain death for these microscopic guys!
